| >> What do you do with a territorial cat??
I don't know! I wish I did! But my cat isn't really bothered by
kitty visits as much as people visits. I let in the paper boy last
weekend while I ran off to get some money. Next thing I know Mandy
is growling at the poor boy. Guess she is just a good watch cat.
What I do when she acts up towards people is just, talk to her nicely,
pick her up, and close her in the bedroom/bathroom area until she cools
off or the offending party leaves. I wish I had better advice but
that's the best I can do.

| I wish there was a good answer to this one too. For a long time,
our neighbor's cat would come over and pick fights with mine. My
cats never went outside, they would fight thru the screen windows.
We had to replace two screens. The last time the other kitty came
over was at 2:30 am. The screams were enough to wake up the dead
and my husband had enough of it. So, he slipped Half-Pint into
her halter and walked her out onto the porch. The other cat was
caught by surprise and didn't move fast enough. Half-Pint jumped
her, the scuffel lasted may 10 seconds and the other cat took off.
After that, she wouldn't come any closer than the end of the driveway!
Not my idea of a good solution, but it did work for us.

| Me too - we have a visitor from the neighbors an acre away.
They have a beautiful long-haired tabby that wanders over
and around my house, up on the porch. I think he spray
my wood pile because when I bring wood in from the porch
for the fireplace, the kids wear out their noses sniffing
the wood! He doesn't do anything wrong (the visitor) but
I always know when he is visiting because Nikki yowls like
crazy - runs from window to window, scratches to get outside,
and then makes other terrible sounds in his throat! He seems
to be the only one bothered by the visits. Last night, the
wanderer came by around 10:30 - usually he shows up during the
day (weekends mostly is when I've seen him). If our windows
are open, my kids will talk to him - when he sees my kids,
he runs home!! Not a very agressive visitor.

| I have the same problem with Sy. He runs from window to window,
growling and hissing. Only major problem I have is if someone gets
in his way. He swings claws, and he doesn't care who it is. He
just wants to hurt something. I usually give him his stuffed dog.
I wish I had a good answer for you.

1363.5 | Watch cat - so that's what its called | SKITZD::WILDE | Being clever is tiring.. | Thu May 12 1988 17:51 | 13 |
| Isn't it strange how some cats are VERY territorial and others don't care.
I have one very "who are you and why are you in MY TERRITORY?" cat, Hannah,
two who will just leave the space until it is vacated by the stranger, and
my roommate's cat, Tabby, feels all strangers are her NEW BEST FRIENDS....
I have no solution for us, as it is strictly an instinctive reaction, where
present, and you can't fight nature....you can circumvent or work around it,
by moving outraged felines away from the area of contention until
they've cooled off, but they will always feel threatened if the "territory"
(as they have perceived it) is invaded.
I kinda like the idea that Hannah is a watch cat, her growl is SO BAD that
if someone couldn't see her they'd expect a large mean dog to be looking
at them. I never had a term for her behavior before this.
