1299.0. "STRANGE RITUAL" by PLANET::SPENCER () Mon Apr 25 1988 13:25

    I told my sister I'd ask this question for her in the Feline file...

    She has a spayed female cat who has never had a litter. When she
    got it as a kitten, my sis also got this small plush toy rabbit from
    her husband as an Easter gift. Anyways, the kitten always loved
    to play with this stuffed animal. Now though, every night after
    the lights go out, my sister hears the cat out in the kitchen crying.
    When she goes to check, she finds the cat wandering around with
    the thing in her mouth, crying. Also, the cat always waits till
    the lights go out for this "ceremony".

    I told her I thought the cat must think it's her baby, but said
    I'd check with all of you for any ideas. Anyone have any comments?

1299.1LONESOME KITTYAIMHI::OFFENMon Apr 25 1988 14:107
    She is probably lonesome. I mean, after all, kitty is wide awake
    and everybody else is in bed. How come theyre not wide awake like
    her??

1299.2A friend...HELCAT::MASONExplaining is not understandingMon Apr 25 1988 14:297
    As has been said before in this conference, the little girl needs
    a companion of the feline persuasion. There is no substitute for
    a playmate!

1299.3Adrienne does it, too.GEMVAX::GRANTMon Apr 25 1988 14:5612
    Adrienne is spayed, has had one litter of kittens, and lives with
    three humans and four other cats (three of which are her kittens).

    She also wanders around sometimes with a little stuffed toy in her
    mouth, and as she walks around with it she cries and cries.

    Last night she came upstairs crying with the stuffed toy in her
    mouth (all five cats sleep upstairs with my husband and me),
    dropped the stuffed toy into my husband's slipper, and then came
    to bed with us.

1299.4Nikolas too!EDUC8::TRACHMANTue Apr 26 1988 13:2510
    Nikolas does that also - he waits until I'm in bed and the
    lights are out, then I hear this pitious muffled cry -
    he walks around with one of his mousies and makes this
    awful noise. It's a ritual - every night. Sometimes
    I find it on the bed in the morning. I think he thinks
    that he is hunting (he was an outdoor kitty until he was
    8 or 9 months old) and he brings me a present! If I
    call his name a few times, he settles right down.

1299.5CIRCUS::KOLLINGKaren, Sweetie, Holly; in Calif.Tue Apr 26 1988 13:387
    Sweetie makes a pitiful cry every once in a while, when he's in
    another room, usually nice and comfy in the window watching the
    yard (This is not the "I see a nice mousy cry.") or snuggled up
    in the blankets in bed. I always call
    back to him in a reassuring voice when he does this -- I think he
    just sort of wants to touch base.

1299.6Purr, chirp, tweet, bark?MARRHQ::KORCHNAKTue Apr 26 1988 17:3114
    Charlie cries when no one will play with him -- if Shanti ignores
    him, and we're busy, he'll go to the top of the staircase and CRY
    AND CRY!

    Shanti, on the other hand, will follow you in the morning purring
    and purring till you pet her! She'll jump in the empty tub, roll
    over and purr! Then in the evenings when I get home she'll yell
    at me in short little 'meows' like "I wanna EAT, I wanna PLAY, I
    wanna DO something, I'm BORED, let's GO, I'm TIRED, etc." Then she'll
    look out our sliding glass doors (after she's done the above 'ritual')
    and watch for birds. IF she sees any, she gets these little 'barks'
    that are SOOO CUTE!!! It's like "I want 'em mom, they're so CUTE!
    I want a birdie! PLEASE! Here birdie birdie!" And Charlie looks
    at her as if she's an idiot....
1299.7Sunny does it too !PMROAD::SWEENEYFri Apr 29 1988 17:409
    Sunny does this crying with the tie from my bathrobe. She drags
    it behind her in between her legs all over the house making the
    same kind of cry she used to make when she would carry her kittens
    around the house. It's pretty funny. She drags it into bed with
    us at night and curls up next to it. Real cozy, cuddling with a
    bathrobe tie!

    She is spayed and had one litter of kittens. She's a sweetie.

1299.8Mommy, where are you?POET::BURLEWPurr is my favorite sound!Fri May 06 1988 12:3711
    Well, Sherlock does something quite similar. After we're in bed, (if
    he didn't come up with us), he'll start to cry (Mommy, where are you?
    I can't find you anywhere? Mommyyyyyyy???). I just call his name and
    he comes running up the stairs, jumps on the bed, walks up me, stands
    on my chest, looks at me as if to say "Oh, there you are. Wow, I
    thought you got lost!", and settles in for the night. Occassionally,
    during the night, he'll jump up, run up to the head of the bed, and
    stare at me (just to make sure I'm still there). Sometimes he brings
    Watson (his teddy) to bed.
