1298.0. "Abandoned animals." by BSS::HOE (Colorado's the place to be.) Mon Apr 25 1988 12:39

There is the on going question of the animal experimentation versus
those of "putting down" the animals in humaine societies to folks
who just abandons their cats. The renters of the house behind us
was evicted recently. Yesterday, their cat, Sunflower, shows up
at our porch, lean and mean looking. I like to think Sunflower came
back to the neighborhood that it likes. I think that the cat was
    just abandoned.

I know that this should be in soapbox but what do you folks think?

Well, I for one feel that given a choice, euthanasia is much more
humane than using an animal for experimental purposes. I don't
care what anyone says - the animals do suffer. However, I believe
that euthanasia should not be performed until the humane societies
have exhausted *all* possibilities of finding the animal a new home.

    Just my opinion,

If animal shelters allow some of their charges to be used for
experimentation rather than being euthanized, many people would
stop turning their animals in and just dump them. I mean, if you
have an animal you couldn't keep and you knew taking it to a shelter
might result in it being experimented on, would you do it? So instead
it starves to death or is killed by a car.

1298.3Maybe let out too soon?POOL::MURPHYIs it Friday yet?Fri May 20 1988 16:029
    I agree totally with .1

I was wondering, however, if there was a possibility of Sunflower
getting let out of his/her new home too soon? I know cats need
about a week to adjust to their new residence or they'll try to
make it back to their previous home (no matter how far). Have the
    owners come looking for Sunflower?
