My friend mentioned in note 1220 just told me something very interesting about rabies shots. Her cats go to Boston Cat Hospital and she recently got a postcard from them saying that Norden (I think that was the name of the manufacturer of the shots) has discovered that rabies shots given through the skin are not as effective as those given intra-muscularly. It seems that for the past 2 years rabies shots have been okayed by the government to be given through the skin. This postcard said that Boston Cat Hospital would give free intra-muscular rabies shots to cats who had been recently innoculated by them. Anyone have any more information on this? Pam

Yes, this was discovered a few months ago - I guess all the rabies shots my kids got last summer were no good - I don't think that I am going to have them done again until the pharmacutical companies get their act together. If your cats are outdoor cats, then you should have them done, but indoor kitties probably are a little safer from being bitten by bats or rabid cats.

My vet told me about this when S&H were in recently. Sweetie was redone. Holly didn't have to be redone because the vet had changed procedures himself before the news came out.

RE .1 Even if they're indoor kitties, I'd get the shot redone. I don't know about the rest of you, but I occassionally have bats in my house (not by invitation, you understand). Ande (Sherlock, Serena, and Sky's mom) |
