1220.0. "Holiday Kennels for shipping x-country" by VAXWRK::LEVINE () Tue Mar 29 1988 11:38
A friend of mine is moving to the San Francisco area very shortly from the
Boston area. I'll be watching her cats while she gets herself established
there and then the cats will be flown out to her. She just sent me some
mail explaining how it's going to work, which I'm enclosing here. There
are some questions at the end, which I'd appreciate input on if anyone
has had a similar experience.
"I just called Holiday Kennels, which specializes in transporting
cats'n'dogs. They said that they'd come out and pick up the cats at your
house and transport them to the airport in San Jose, where I have to pick
them up. Then we talked about requirements.
"I have to supply a container for each kitty, that is large enough for
the cat to stand up and turn around in. I also have to provide, for
each cat, a rabies health certificate that can not be any older than 10
days old. (If the kids ship out on the 24th, the certificate has to be
from the 15th or later). (This requirement is imposed by the state of
California.)
"The other thing is, I'm concerned about the container requirements for
shipping critters across the nation. Last night I got a song and dance
from Boston Pet saying that I had to get a container that, I swear, was
big enough to put a medium-sized dog in -- they claimed that a container
any smaller wasn't acceptable to the airlines any more. But this woman,
who's in the business of shipping animals, just said that the container
had to be big enough for the cat to stand up straight and be able to
turn around in. Can you check this out in the cats notesfile?
"Getting the kids out to San Jose may very well prove to be the biggest
challenge in this move.
So, now come the questions. Has anyone had any experience with Holiday
Kennels in shipping cats cross country? Secondly, does anyone have better
information on the requirements for the container for each cat?
Thanks for any help,
Pam

1220.1 | | CIRCUS::KOLLING | Karen, Sweetie, Holly; in Calif. | Tue Mar 29 1988 14:22 | 12 |
| I don't know anything about Holiday Kennels, but could the two of
you handle this yourself? This would reduce some of the uncertainty.
I also don't know why they are sending the cats to San Jose (2
hours driving time south of San Francisco) rather than to San Francisco
where your friend lives. If you could take the cats to the airport,
and your friend could pick them up, and you make sure the flight
has no stop-overs (to avoid the cats being misplaced in transit),
wouldn't this be better? (There is a note somewhere in this file
with bad stories about cages coming unlatched in transit, animals
suffocating if all the air holes in the cages are closed, etc.)

1220.2 | Clarification | VAXWRK::LEVINE | | Tue Mar 29 1988 14:45 | 18 |
|
I took a few shortcuts in the description of the situation. There are
3 cats involved - I will be cat-sitting 2 of them and another friend will be
cat-sitting the third. In addition, my friend is hoping to settle in a
town called Los Gatos (get it?) which is much closer to San Jose than San
Francisco. Not having spent alot of time on the west coast, my description
of the "San Francisco area" is probably very different from that of a local.
I had originally thought that I would be bringing the cats to the airport
before the flight. I assume my friend is making these arrangements with
Holiday Kennels to cut down on the hassle-factor for us cat-sitters. Since
these people provide a service to transport pets, one can assume that they
are experienced with this sort of thing and know the ins and outs although
I will pass your concerns along to my friend so she can discuss it with them.
Thanks,
Pam

1220.3 | FLYING FUR | VIDEO::TEBAY | Natural phenomena invented to order | Tue Mar 29 1988 17:55 | 12 |
| I don't know about Holiday but there is a service called
FLYING FUR that I have used three times in the past (all major
cities transfers) and the price was the same as if I did it myself.
They pick the animal up, can arrange for papers if necessary
and personally ensure that it gets on the plane. Same thing on the
other end if necessary.
I used them Dallas to Chicago and Chicago to New York and
New York to Boston.

Would you have a phone number for them? They're not listed in the Boston
white or Yellow Pages.
Thanks,
