| I don't know if you're over-reacting. All three of mine (2 neutered
males, one neutered female) have had bouts with FUS. Being on CD
was the solution. So I plan to feed this to my cats forever, just
in case.

| If you read my base note, #1207, you can see that I, too, am worried
about feeding my two neutered males "grocery store junk food."
They won't eat anything else. Nikki wouldn't touch his breakfast
because it wasn't 100% PURE Friskees Buffet (I mixed in 1 part Friskees
to 1 part Hills C/D). Chauncey, my big pig, gobbled it down for
him and I felt so bad for Nikki pitifully looking on that I gave
in and gave him the rest of the Friskees.
My vet told me that Friskees is okay, as long as the ash content
listed on the side of the can is below 3%. If your cats are having
bouts of FUS, I would seriously recommend going to your vet and
getting some samples of Hills C/D. I went to my local vet in Ashland,
MA, and they willingly gave me samples since I wasn't sure if my
cats would eat it. IAMS is wonderful and even looks and smells
like something I would eat - don't know why my boys turn up their
noses at it.
Anyway, do try to gradually wean them off of the store bought by
introducing small amounts of the better quality brands into their
regular food. I mix the Hills C/D dry into the Crave real well,
so they HAVE to eat it to get to the junk stuff.
If yours are already experiencing bouts of FUS, don't take any chances.

1211.4 | Ash can be good... | NAC::LACOUR | | Thu Mar 24 1988 16:18 | 22 |
| The Hills CD is great for FUS. Barney has had FUS problems on and
off for the last few years, but my other boys aren't bothered.
Since feeding him a combination CD & 9-Lives, he hasn't had FUS.
I've always watched the ash content in store cat food, but last
year was told that ash contains many good minerals for the cats,
and that it was discovered that it wasn't so much ash that caused
FUS, but high levels of magnesium and potassium (I think it's
potassium). The CD, though, is loaded with calories, which has
been mentioned in this conference recently. When I brought my boys
in for their yearly checkup last week, I questioned the vet on this
and she verified it's high in calories. If your cat tends to eat
a lot or is on the chubby side (like mine), you might have to find
an alternative to CD. I'm seeing the vet again tonight (my guys
were back for teeth cleaning) and I will ask about an alternative.
Gonezo weighs 18.6lbs and Barney is up to 19.6 (a 2lb increase)
so I'm in desparate need of finding another good FUS food.
I'll reply to this note tomorrow and let you guys know what my vet
says.

I used to feed Science Diet Maintenance, now feed nothing but IAMS
dry.

| I believe Cin is correct, Cystitis Diet. All of Hill's Prescription
Diets have names of the format ?/D, where D stands for Diet and
the ? stands for what the diet is for. They have a K/D, Kidney Diet
for cats with deteriorating kidneys, a S/D, Stone Diet for cats
that get kidney stones, an R/D, Reducing Diet for overweight cats.
By the way, Prescription Diet is a registered tradmark, and the
foods marketed under the label of Prescription Diet are only available
from your vet.

1211.10 | Vet suggests Iams... | NAC::LACOUR | | Fri Mar 25 1988 16:17 | 10 |
| Well, I went to the vet yesterday to pick up my boys and questioned
the vet about an alternative to C/D. She suggested only Iams.
I know where my mother lives (in NJ) she can occassionaly get GOFF
cat food. This is specifically for low ash diets and is good vs
junk (ie Cadillac) cat food. I have not been able to find it around
the MA area. I think what I will end up doing is once I'm done
with my current batch of cat food (combination of 9-Lives, CD, and
Purina Pro Plan), I'll switch to the Iams for the dry food supplement
and buy the Hills R/D.
