1190.0. "What's your cat's odd hobby?" by OBSESS::JENSEN (Your ad here) Wed Mar 16 1988 14:52

Willie loves to watch hockey on TV. He sits himself down right
in front of the screen, and his head darts back and forth as he
takes in the action. He bats at the moving figures and also
jumps up and attacks the TV as players disappear off the edge
of the screen ("where'd they go???"). He'll also lie on top of
the TV and watch it upside-down.

No other sport or TV program (except the occasional nature show
with a lot of bird sounds) catches his interest, and none of
our cats have caught the hockey bug.

We wonder if he'll forget about hockey after the season ends,
but he keeps coming back every October -- he's into his fourth
    season as a fan!

We went to a game at Boston Garden two weeks ago, and it seemed
like a real shame that Willie couldn't come along!

What offbeat thing amuses your cat?

1190.1Loves to hide!LDP::BANGMAWed Mar 16 1988 15:187
Weazy loves to hide in paper bags (not so unusual), and he also
likes to hide behind my bathrobe hanging on the hook when I'm in
the shower, or on the edge of the tub behind the curtain. He will
pull the bathroom towels off the rack hoping that he will be able
    to hide behind them too!

Most of mine like to watch WWF pro wrestling. They also enjoy catfood
    commercials.

Bandit likes it when I pick him up, turn him upside down with one
hand supporting his head, the other supporting the rest of him.
Then I swing him back and forth towards a mirror and he tries
    to grab the other kitty.

T.K. LOVES beer caps and will play with them for hours.

Cinamon likes to tear his hair out with his teeth and decorate
my furniture with it. Its kinda gross.....

Barney used to like to watch baseball when he was a kitten. He'd
sit on top of the TV, watch upside down, and bat at the players
as they ran around the bases or field.
Ben likes to sleep on top of the cable tv box. I've got a great
    picture of this one.
Gonezo is a wimp. When a lot of company comes over or we're at
my mother's house, he will hide under the quilt thinking no one
knows he's there. It's kind of hard to hide an 18lb cat!

Schnapps likes to bat at the shower curtain when I'm in the shower...
Hoping I will bat back...I usually do...It's kind of cute!
Then when I'm done, she'll jump in and check out the bathtub faucet
    drips.

You should see the edge of the shower...I have to clean it almost
    everyday.

Mozie likes to play hide'n seek under beds and chairs but always
forgets to stick his rear end in (if I can't see you then you can't
see me!) He also wants to picked up whenever I play the "Cats"
    album.
Misha wants her drinking water in a paper cup.
Jemma is a fan of Mr. Rogers Neighborhood and likes to chase Mr.
    trolley car.
And every evening precisely at 9:30 the whole group line up in the
kitchen waiting for one of us to hand out Bonker treats.

Tasha Marie loves water. She always comes running when the toilet
flushes or the water is running in the sink. She loves the shower
too. She acts like she wants to get in, until she gets a sprinkle
of water on her. Tasha can not understand how something as fun
as water can do something so nasty(getting her wet).

Cho Cho San loves to help me water the plants. She jumps up into
the pots and watches the water as it sinks into the dirt then she
tries to retrieve it. Sometimes she bats the water as it pours
out of the spout and sometimes she tries to drink the water as it
pours out. When I want to fertilize the plants I have to put her
in teh bedroom with the door closed for a long time.

It's great fun to watch her. She also likes to drink her water
out of the basin in the bathroom and she loves to check the dripping
    faucet after my shower.
1190.9Helping PawsAWARD1::HARMONFri Mar 18 1988 16:0715
Schnitzel loves to help me make the bed. She can be downstairs
in her chair sound asleep when I start to make the bed. By the
time I have the sheets off and am ready to put the clean ones on,
Schnitz is running up the stairs ("wait for me, Mom") jumps on the
bed and waits for the sheet to cover her. She then crawls out and
waits for the blanket to cover her, crawls out and waits for the
spread. Occasionally she'll let all layers be put on top of her,
corners all tucked in, then she'll slither to the side and slip
out, shake her head, jump back on the bed and sit ("Nice job we
    did, Mom").

She also loves to jump in an empty laundry basket and sit.....

1190.10Merlin loves to play tagCLT::ZIMANZSat Mar 19 1988 23:5818
I'm a little embarrassed to admit this...

My friends cat LOVES to play tag with me. He doesn't do this
with anyone else (except his sister I imagine, since they "road
    race a lot)

I never know when the mood will strike him. I'll be walking down
the hall and all of a sudden he'll come running out of no where
at light speed..stop within an inch of me, and gently tap
me on the leg, give me devious look, and run away at top speed.
I'm supposed to chase him, tap him gently and run, with him chasing
me in return. He'd play this game for hours if I'd cooperate.
If I don't chase him he'll make a high "chirp" calling sound
    (his name for me?)

1190.11Plays "Catch"LDP::BANGMAMon Mar 21 1988 10:0212
Hitla likes to play "catch" with my husband's spongy ear plugs.
She'll grope around the bedroom until she finds one, even in his
top drawer, and then she will put it on the sofa. If I don't
give it a flick so she can chase it, she'll drop it down between
the sofa cushions and proceed to retrieve it, over and over.
When I do play with her, she actually brings it back to me and
    drops it into my hand!

Has anyone else seen a cat play "catch" before?

1190.12Commando kittyFDCV03::FRANCISCOMon Mar 21 1988 13:1313
W.W. also likes to help me make the bed (a waterbed !!).
As soon as the sheets are off the bed, he tries to chase
the air bubble in the mattress - he still can't understand
why he can't catch them, and would probably be at it for hours
unless I made the bed. Then when I'm putting the sheets on,
he stays under them and plays "commando kitty" until I force
    him out.

W.W. also loves the laundry basket when there's clothes (already
folded, of course) in there, and dig whatever's on the bottom up
to the top. He's a riot to watch !

Retriever cat!!! We have a siamese that retrieves paper and
wants you to toss it again and she will go get it and bring it back.
This same cat "Chinky" learned a game that a friend of mine taught
her, we call it "through the leg game" you have to sit with your
legs crossed only lift one so the cat can go through it and go round
and round chasing your hand. Kind of hard to explain! But now that
she is bigger it's not as cute but she insists on playing it and
if you don't co-operate she will paw at your legs until you play!

Spooky loves to eat winter squash while you are fixing it the
raw squash seeds and all!!! She also loves chocolate, oreos especially
she goes nuts if you are eating them in front of her!

Misty like to get on your shoulder especially in the bathroom
when you are brushing your teeth and she likes to look at herself
in the mirror at this time, if you can get the picture!!! Our house
    is crazy!!!!!

1190.14Keeping a clean sheet???GYPSC::SHIPLEYIs there life after DECTue Mar 22 1988 03:2615
Our cat Smokey (r.i.p.) used to play goalkeeper. We would make little
balls out of screwed-up pieces of magazines, etc. and toss them
into the air and he would leap up after them and catch them with
both paws! Sometimes about 2 feet into the air from a sitting position!
The only problem? He would only do this on the bed while my wife
and I were in it. We would be sitting maybe reading a book before
turning in for the night and we would hear a squeaking noise which
would herald the arrival of Smokey with one of his "balls". He would
jump up onto the bed, drop the paper ball on the covers in front
of one of us and move down to the other end of the bed ready to
play. Luckily the session would only last about 10-15 mins and then
we would be allowed to go to sleep. (Gosh I miss that)

My Little Whicket loves to play catch! She will grab
anything from a top to the milk carton or a slip of
paper. Her favorite is a little toy white mouse that
is covered with fur. (the mouse is getting a bit ragged)
She will cry until I throw it and sometimes she bats
it back to me. It's cute and she will play for hours
before she gets tired of it. Unfortunatly, I get tired
of it first and she has to be content to bat it around
    herself!

Punjab loves to "play ball". He learned as a kitten that if he
would bring his golf_ball_size nerf ball back to me I would throw it for
him. He will then crouch down on the floor and wait for me to throw
it. He won't play with my wife because she dosen't throw it hard
enough (with the bounce over his head, please!) If I look at him
at any time and say "ball?" he responds with a chirp. This is real
fun until he drops the ball on your face at about 3:00am!

Hannah takes her "cat dancer" toy and teases Nicholas with it...then she
runs around the house with Nick chasing her. They have the perfect kitty
toy, it works without mom's intervention so they don't have to wait until
I'm through with dishes and my workout...in fact, the game often goes
OVER me while I'm working out!

NOTE: If you have a cat that won't play with anything, ask your pet
store to get you a cat dancer...its a long curved wire with a few pieces
of wood at one end...as far as I can see, this toy is irresistable. Nick
plays as hard and as long as Hannah and he is 8 years old!

Bailey plays with the "cat dancer" toy by herself. She grabs one
end and the other end moves so she jumps to it, or she carries one
end in her mouth and ends up running in circles for the other end.

Amelia plays with anything...Q-tips, garbage back ties, etc. Her
favorite toy still seems to be the invisible mouse that runs through
our house every now and then. Its a riot to watch her trying to
catch something that isn't really there.

both get chased by invisible things through the house.

Yes, my little "Goldie" loves to play catch, she loves crinkled
up paper in a ball or aluminum paper in a ball too. She fetch it
and return it to me to throw it again.

Snookie loves to watch me make the bed, he'll be in the other room
and come racing, jump on the bed and start swimming (at least that
is what it looks like - the frog swim) and he'll do this all over
the bed as I'm tucking in the sheets. The Goldie gets in on the
fun and joins in, but she likes to be covered with the sheets, etc.
When I'm finished, they jump off the bed and look at me as if to
say, "boy what a good job we did".

The little baby "Mittens" loves to play with anything lying arond
like pencils, pens, pulling down the bathroom towells trying to
    hide.

Both Goldie and Mittens love to play in the bathroom, and watch
me take a bath or shower. Mittens loves to go between the shower
curtin and sheer curtin. He'll try to reach for me through the
curtin as if I can't see him through it. As if he is playing
    peek-a-boo.

All three love to watch channel 2, especially when they have nature
shows on with the birds chirping, lions roaring, etc. They will
sit in front of the TV and watch for quite a while.

And people say cats are stupid.... they just never had one and observed
    them.

    That's all

Come on! Just because YOU can't see the mouse/etc. doesn't
mean your cat is chasing nothing. Your cat CLEARLY has

Chauncey, the Great White Hunter, stalks invisible prey around the
living room all the time. Honey will sit and watch him, with a
look like "what's that dumb cat doing?" on his face. Chauncey will
stalk, pounce, and then batter his 'prey' and will then walk away.
He will sometimes return to the battle site and do the famous 'pounce
    and run' bit. Silly boy...

Dillan loves to watch nature programs (birds etc..) and also he
is very much into snooker (just can't understand where the balls
go when they disappear down a pocket...he starts searching under
    the TV.)

Sammie loves to help make the bed but always lies right on the edge
so when I pull the quilt straight he falls onto the floor every
time...one day he'll learn. Dillan just likes to get into bed,
sometimes he'll lay at the top, under the quilt but with his head
on the pillow or he'll go right to the bottom (under the quilt)
and curl up and stay there.

Both are facinated by the bathroom. If you are cleaning your teeth
they will sit on the side of the basin and watch (as if to say my
turn next) or they will walk along the side of the bath while you
are in it...trying not to fall in or if the bath is empty they race
round the tub...like the wall of death!!!

Sammie is the one that catches birds/mice etc (I reprimand him of
course) but Dillan goes out and catches.....LEAVES!!!! he is so
proud when he catches one he brings it back to show us. Once I
caught him reversing through the cat flap with a mouth full of
Pampas grass, the lady over the road was not impressed (it was
her pride and joy). I wasn't impressed either, he must have been
doing this for hours as I ended up with all her HUGE plant up my
stairs!!!! I couldn't help laughing though, he obviously thought
it would look nicer in our garden!!!!

Tabitha, the siamese, used to do that until she DID fall in on me!
The neighbors must have thought we were torturing a child. When I got
her head above water she started wailing and didn't stop until I got
her wrapped all warm and snuggly in a towel. It was not the most wonderful
interruption to my "relaxing" bubble bath. Needless to say, with bubbles,
I had to add insult to injury by rinsing her off real good before I could
dry....she doesn't like bathrooms anymore!
