1177.0. "Help! pregnant cat left behind!" by SPIDER::PEARCE (All things bright and beautiful) Sat Mar 12 1988 14:18

Recently, our neighbors across the street moved. Yesterday,
my daughter saw a cat sitting in their window. We checked
with a few neighbors to see if these people actually had moved,
and everyone is sure they have. My daughter went over and
tried to find the cat - it was sitting on the back porch. We
have no idea how the cat is getting in and out. Well, needless to
say we have taken her in. She appears to be pregnant and well
along at that. I couldn't bear the thought of her having her
kittens under the porch or what ever.

I called the dog officer, she was sympathetic, but, suggested
I call a humane society, if we find the the cat was deserted.
So, we are waiting to see if anyone shows up for their cat.
If they don't, I have another cat.

We are willing to take the mom in - but, there is no way
we can keep the kittens too. We have as of today, 3 cats
(1 unneutered male, 1 neutered, and a pregnant, unspayed
	female) , 2 dogs, 2 birds, a rabbit and a turtle. So, I
want to get a head start on placing these kittens. I am,
of course leaving a note on the door across the street, just
in case, these people did not intentionally leave their cat
	behind.

So, please spread the word, or if you know of a humane society
that will place them, rather than put them to sleep please
	respond.

I live in Maynard, MA. The cat is a small money(?) cat, mostly
gold and black, short hair. She's very pretty and very
affectionate. I can't wait to see her kittens, they will
be beautiful, I'm sure. I will send another note, when
they arrive - how many, sex, color etc. In the meantime,
any suggestions to help place them will be appreciated.

	Thank you
	- Linda

It's great that you've taken in the cat. Is there no way to find
the neighbors to be sure the cat has actually be abandoned? You
might send them a letter to the old address marked "please forward"
in case the post office has a forwarding address. (I think the
p.o. will not release forwarding addresses directly.) My neighbors'
cats get in and out thru the ventilation windows in the foundation,
which let them into the basement and the basement door inside the
house is left open for them.

I would think that if they really loved and cared for their cat,
they would be back for it, and if they couldn't find it, they would
    ask around.

I vote keep the cat and place the kittens.

Maybe they moved too far away to come back and search. I vote to
hold onto the cat, write a letter to their old address, and hope
to receive news that they are `missing' their cat. There are alot
of people looking for kittens so placing the kittens should be no
problem. I know if I lost my `babies' and moved too far away, someone
would try to inform me that they had them.

    Here's hoping for the best.....

It's incredible the response I've gotten so far on this
situation. Three people already want a kitten. (hopefully,
	she'll have that many.)

Now to let everyone know what I have decided to do. A few neighbors
saw the police at the house (which is a 2 family apt bldg) with
papers, and the family threw everything they had on 2 pickups
and have not been seen since. It seems to me they have enough
problems, and I don't think it would be worthwhile chasing them
	down.

If they do come back for the cat, fine. The note will
be there with my name address and phone #. The dog officer
is looking into the situation, to find out where they moved, etc.
But, she felt it was best to just keep the cat and place the
kittens. Although she will call me if she gets any info.

A few of the neighbors felt the cat was neglected by the family,
she was always out at night in the cold.

The cat is a tortoise not a money.

Will post more, when the kittens arrive.

	Thanks everyone!

1177.5Good for you!!MEMV03::BULLOCKFlamenco--NOT flamingo!!Mon Mar 21 1988 13:5512
Good for you, Linda, to give this mom a home!! Sounds like those
folks don't need or want a cat. She's safest with you.

I'm very happy that there are people who want her kitties already!
That's wonderful. Please keep us posted on mom and kids.

Have you named her yet? She sounds absolutely beautiful. She also
sounds like she will make a welcome addition to your home.

    Best of luck,

    Jane

My daughter named her Penelope. I call her Penny.

No kittens yet..everyday I expect to find her with
her kittens. You should see how big she is! I can
feel them moving. There has to be at least 3 in there.

My other 2 cats hiss at her through the cellar door.
I don't dare introduce them right now, so, I'm keeping
	them separate.

No word from the previous owners. I'm not surprised.

You must be very kind and generous people to take in the pregnant and
abandoned cat. May I suggest, gently, that your unneutered male may
have contributed to the unfortunate situation? Please consider having
your cats neutered and spayed. You'll probably enjoy their company
    even more!

Good luck with finding homes for the kittens! They certainly have
a much better chance on life with your help!
1177.8Five Beautiful babies!LDYBUG::PEARCEAll things bright and beautifulTue Mar 29 1988 16:3322
They have arrived! Yesterday morning Penelope was nursing her babies.
She had five. 1 gold tiger (spoken for) 1 solid black (spoken for)
1 torti (spoken for) and 2 black and whites (still need homes)

They all look very healthy and are very active. Mom is sooo proud.
She just loves us to look at her babies.

Yes, I agree wholeheartedly. He's a year old and due to be neutered.
It will be taken care of when Penelope weans her kittens. It will only
cost 1 office visit if I take them together.

P.S. Now Penelope Greene knows what it is like to have a cat named
after her. :-) Should she start signing her name
    "Penelope_the_person"?
