1149.0. "SIAMESE" by CLEVER::SULLIVAN () Mon Feb 29 1988 14:27

Help, I have a new (6 months old Siamese) kitten, I don't know anything
about Siamese. Any information on charastics of Siamese would be
appreciated. Like why did the cat bite my 3 year old grand daughter
when she was just looking at the cat ? I was sitting with her,
she did not provoke the cat. Why does the cat prefer my 22 year
old daughter to me (I am the one that is with the cat and feeds
her)? The cat (Tisha) hears my daughter coming in at night and
cries until I let her into my daughters bedroom. This thrills my
    daughter, but not me.
    Thanks
    Eileen

Maybe Tisha was jealous of your granddaughter?
I've seen this sometimes with my two cats -- if Sweetie is getting
some cuddling, sometimes Holly will walk by and take a nip (and then
keep on walking, pretending that nothing happened) -- little
demon, she knows she'd get petted too if she settled in. I try
to cuddle them both at the same time, or if I'm cuddling one and
the other walks by, I "invite" the second one in, to try and counteract
    any tendency for jealousy.

Could this be why the cat seeks out your daughter? Does she get
    more "undivided" attention from her?

    RE: jealous of granddaughter

I have only had Tisha one week, I don't think she is jealous in
    that short a time frame.

    RE: daughter

I pay more attention to Tisha, she just took to my daughter the
    second she saw her.

I was thinking I was paying to much attention to her, mabey if I
gave her cold shoulder for a few day's she would appreciate my caring
    for her a bit more.

I think that Tisha has chosen your daughter as the `human' in her
    life.

Just sit back and enjoy what rewards Tisha will give you.

One thing about Siamese they are very one-on-one human oriented.
I've got one named Misha (misha meet Tisha-Tisha meet Misha) anyways
she is very attatched to me and vica-versa ;when she was a kitten
she generally shunned everyone else and now has a reputation as
an absolute snob, but as she got older she began nizzling up to
other people. They love attention - pure and simple!
Have fun with her, believe me Siamese are very clever and creative,
once she gets her bearing on who's who you'll have lots of fun..just
    give her some time...

Boy, is Fran right! I have a couple also - Sasha is almost 9
years old. I AM HER PERSON. She tells me this every waking
moment of every day of her life. She tells my other 12 cats
this every waking moment of their lives. She tells any and
all visitors this when they come to our house. The older
she gets, the more people she tells! When she was a baby
she wouldn't let anyone else hold her - at least now, she
will snuggle with almost all visitors (what a relief!).
She has slept under the covers every night that I don't
boot her out - boy, is she a bed hog - she likes to sleep
right in the middle - heaven help the kitty that decides
to crawl under also! She creates a Holy War in the middle
of the night! Sasha is beautiful and as slender as she was
when she was a year old, but boy what a pain! Sorry to have
run on, but she has been very vocal lately!

When Hannah came into my life, she had been adopted by a friend of mine.
The minute Hannah met me, she decided I was the one she wanted to own....
My friend was "cat smart" and picked up on the situation and gave Hannah
into my care, as it was obvious that this kitten was not going to be
happy living anywhere else but with me. Rene has since adopted another
kitten who needed a home, and Hannah is happily, energetically turning
my home and the other resident cats upside down. Sometimes, I think a
cat "knows" someone in a special way and it has nothing to do with
whether that person is the primary care person or not. I know that
Hannah really likes my roommate, Marge, but she follows me everywhere
and sleeps with me.

However, my black cat, Samson, has gravitated to Marge and although
I pay all vet bills, he really owns Marge much more than me now.

This is a perfect excuse for you to go out and find a kitten to own you
and be a companion to the kitten already in residence!

Tisha is warming up, she did sleep on my bed last night, she heard
my daughter come in and did not cry at the bedroom door. PROGRESS
My daughter insist's she is going to introduce Tisha to Sasha (a
cat hating dog). I don't think the cat is ready for it, her previous
owner had her spayed and declawed three weeks ago, she then sold
her to me, the day she came to me she got stuck in a wall behind
my kitchen cabinets for five hours. I think this is enough trama
in her 6 month life for a while. I am afraid without the claws
she will be at to much of a dissadvantage with the dog. The dog
is outside all day, Tisha is an indoor cat, when the dog comes in
at night I keep Tisha in my room. I am sure some day the twang will
meet, but for now I just want the cat to get accostom to the house
    and humans.

I also have two Siamese - Pyewacket is very definitely my older
sons. Mao is mine. They politely ignore anyone else.

As for the bite - either of mine have been known to take a nip
when they just plain don't want to bother with you any longer.

As others have said - enjoy them. They have so much personality!

    Re: biting your granddaughter

When our oldest Siamese Sandy was about 6 months old, my nephew
came over for a weekend. He must have been about 4 years old at
the time. We had had Sandy since she was 6 weeks old and hardly
ever had anyone over to the house. Anyway, Joseph was there for
the weekend and Sandy seemed very out of sorts about this. For
no reason at all, she jumped onto Joseph's back and injected ALL
of her claws as she tried to hold onto him. Of course he screamed.
He didn't even see her coming. And she jumped down and ran away.
She must have known she did something bad because we didn't see
her for a while. She hid somewhere in the house. But I think she
was just very jealous of the attention a stranger was getting, even
though she was still getting just as much attention as she was used
to. They all have such different personalities, who can tell?
Just love them and they will love you back in their own way.
