When I lost Alex-I, I wanted to get several kittens to help me through
the grief and pain. Instead, I was adopted by an older stray whom no
one wanted. I feel a lot of comfort knowing that I saved a cat who
would not otherwise have had an opportunity for a good life. I know
Alex-I would approve my decision!
We also have other cats who have adjusted to the new addition. I agree
with the previous suggestion that you can select a particularly mellow
cat or one whose personality may be known from a shelter to help ensure
a smooth integration with "W". Good luck!!

I agree that this is a good way of getting over the grief of losing
a cat. The only way you can cope is to say "Well at least he/she
had a good life and knew they were loved, they could have had it
so much worse".
To give this opportunity to a cat who has experienced the other
side of life, been neglected, unwanted etc seems a positive way
of paying back some of the pleasure that the cat you lost has given
you.
Your adopted stray is, of course, a delight in his/her own right.
I hope you both are happy.
