1107.0. "An Unusual Case" by IPG::KCAMPBELL (Oh no! not Georgie again!!!) Wed Feb 10 1988 09:19

Thought you might like to know about something that happened to my
cat...

A couple of weeks ago he came home one evening obviously at the
losing end of a fight; head and paw bleeding and covered in dirty
water.

We cleaned him up and he went to sleep. The next day his paw was very
swollen and he had difficulty walking on it. A trip to the vet showed
that he had been severely bitten there and the force of the bite had caused
the swelling. He was given a jab and course of antibiotics and in a
day or so he was back to normal.

Then, almost two weeks after this episode he began limping again and closer
examination showed that the same front paw was swollen but this time
the swelling was down the side and back of the paw. Off he went
back to the vet...

However, the vet could not diagnose the problem fully without an x-ray
so back Georgie had to go on Monday morning for his x-ray. The
results were rather astounding and the vet said he'd only ever come
across this sort of case in his college text books! What it was that
was causing the pain and swelling was a sizeable piece of tooth
that had broken off the cat who had bitten him and become embedded
amongst the bones in the part of the leg immediately above his paw.

They operated that afternoon to remove it and Georgie is now happily
back to normal, apart from the rather large scar and stitches he's
sporting.

Has anyone else any unusual events to relate?

Best wishes,

Karen

Well, I had a sort of unusual thing happen mwith my Misha that cost
me a fortune in Vet bills. A few months back Misha came pounding
out of the kitchen growling and foaming at the mouth. I had never
seen this happen before and as she has had her shots I ruled out
rabies. But her behavior at that moment had all the earmarks of
a deranged feline as I couldn't get near her as she hissed growled
    and spat.
I hurried to the phone and called the vet who told me to bring her
down immediatly. And as it was a Sunday this was gonna cost extra
for an emergency visit. I finally managed to catch Misha and stuff
    her into her carrier.
Ehen I got to the vets she had calmed down and quit spitting. But
upon examination the vet was baffled as Misha's tongue was a dark
purple. Never had the vet heard of or seen anything so bazarr. And
immediatly bagan running a series of tests. It was while I was
at home waiting for the vets call that I discovered the source of
Misha's malady. In the kitchen I found a glass of Welches grape
juice on the counter that I hadn't finished at breakfast. I called
the vet who said that yes indeed, it could have been a bad a reaction
to a bad taste in her mouth which would account for all the spitting.
The end result? Misha came home that afternoon purring after all
the attention. I had a bill for $125 for vet care - all to learn
    that Misha hates grapes!!!!!!!

I'm not laughing ..... only because DejaVu pulled the same thing
on me. I had sprayed her with flea spray and when I saw her a little
while later she was foaming at the mouth and acting very strange.

After talking to the vet, I found out that some cats are allergic
to flea sprays and can only tolerate flea powders.

Of course I was imagining all sorts of things that DejaVu could
have `possibly' gotten into and really thought she was `dying'.

    Typical BRAT routine.

    Re. -1

I'm confused. Foaming at the mouth and acting very strange is
not BRAT behavior. Surely you don't imply that she was 'faking'
this? Allergic reaction to pesticides is serious.

Never use Hartz Blockaid on your pets, there have been hundreds
of small animal fatalities related to this product. Hartz has stopped
producing it but has refused to recall the product already on the
    shelves.
