| I think that grooming school usually teaches both cats and dogs
but the emphasis is on dogs since few people get their cats
professionally groomed. I know that the groomer I bring Pip to is
a very buzy groomer but she only has about 5 or 10 regular cat customers.

| If you want to learn cat grooming, learn from a breeder.
Seriously!!!!!
Most "real" groomers do a terrible job on cats. Not that they don't
get them clean or anything, but....I have seen some cats brought
to shows after being bathed and groomed at a groomer for big buckos!!!
Most of the time they are laughable!!!!!
Find yourself a persian or himmy breeder, preferably one that shows,
and ask for a lesson or two. If you want, I'll teach you, on a
live cat, even!!!!! tee hee

| I agree with Cin...a Himmy/Persian breeder showed me how to "do"
my guys and she really knew her stuff. Unlike dog shows, where
the dogs are professionally groomed and handled, cats are usually
groomed and shown by their breeder(s). The advice that I got from
Cin about how to clean Chauncey's eyes was better than I got from
the vet!
Oh, Cin, I'll bring Chauncey right down; he has this little problem
with dirty eyes....only kidding!! And can you imagine Fire with
a poodle cut??

| Mary,
Fire would be soooooo embarrassed if he knew you were making fun
of his haircut!!!

| Could any of you experienced_at_cat_grooming_types give a few of
these helpful hints? ie: cleaning eyes and other grooming tricks
would be *most* helpful. My Himmie, Carrington, always has dirty
eyes, and my Persian, Colby, suffers from terminal static electricity
and mats. Thanks!!!

| Oh, No! Poor Fire! He'll never make the cover of Cats again looking
like that!! I'll bet he's having a hard time flirting with the
girls looking like that (or does his smoking jacket cover it??)!
BTW, you should see Chauncey now that he's grown in to his face...
he's gorgeous.

| I agree with cin and mary... POOKIE'S former owmer/breeeder showed
me how to do groom POOKIE.. I DO however send her to the groomer
everysix weeks..(SHE HAS A STANDING APPT.. AHEM!!!!).. my groomer
is very good. her name is desirree maloiun and she owns Pet
Essential in hudson ,N.H.. I found her thru Pookies personal
physican.. (DR eric here in merrimack..).. she is just wonderful.
and she likes the Pook... she gets abig kick out of Pookie's
antics. ie.. getting the tub all by herself.. sits there with
her eyes closed and purrs away..(all she really needs is her
magazine and candy!!!!!!..) Tee-Hee!!!1

1067.9 | I'll brag for Cin and Fire | CLUSTA::TAMIR | To a cat, all things belong to cats | Wed Jan 27 1988 21:21 | 17 |
| Well, since Cin won't brag, I'll do it for her! Thesaurus' Great
Balls of Fire was the All-American Cat of the Year, awarded by Cats
Magazine and appeared on the cover of the October 1985 issue. I
saved that issue (it's around the house somewhere...) because, even
before I knew he was Cin's little wonder, I couldn't get over that
face! He really is magnificent... It's worth a trip to the library
to see that one!
And since I love to brag about MY boys, Honey may never get on the
cover of Cats, but his pawtrait has won First Prize in numerous
photography competitions and he has modeled for a couple pet supply
cat-alogs. Maybe Chauncey will appear in Opthamology Monthly....
Cin, you must be VERY proud!

1067.10 | Just a little bragging, then some info! | FIDDLE::GERRY | Go ahead, make me PURRR... | Thu Jan 28 1988 10:58 | 40 |
| Okay, so I will brag, just a little!!! Last year was the last year
for Cats Magazine All-American's and this October they printed the
scores of every All-American Cat since they have been giving out
the award.
Fire is/was the highest scoring All-American Cat Ever!!!
He is also CFF's highest scoring cat ever!!!
Sorry, couldn't help myself!!!
Anyway, back to the topic...
There is at least one good note in here somewhere about bathing.
But I don't know if we ever talked about maintenance grooming, which
is different than show grooming.
For keeping the eyes clean, I use a boric acid solution that I mix
up. I wipe the eyes first using real cotton balls (not those
polyester puffs!) dampened with the boric acid solution. If the
staining/tearing isn't that bad, you might just use a Q-tip. The
cotton gives move absorbency. There are alot of other products
out that you can buy to use instead of the boric acid, but this
seems to work the best for me. It's also much less expensive!!!
Static electricity in the winter is almost impossible to get rid
of. You can control it a little during grooming by using Ring 5
Coat Gloss. I don't happen to like it myself, but lots of people
use it. I spray static guard (the product you spray on clothes)
onto the comb or brush and that seems to work best for me.
Of course, if you bathe the cat, whatever you use as a rinse will
affect the static electricity in the coat.
just my ideas....anymore??

| Well, I do have that issue of Cats after all. Fire is magnificent.
His coloring is wonderful. I showed his picture to Holly, however,
and she said, "Well! If you think he compares to a beautiful black
and grey tabby with a _fluffy_ tail and a little triangular fox
face and lovely green eyes that are darker green around the iris,
you have just unbelievable taste, that's all I can say!" and she
flounced off. So, I showed Fire's picture to Sweetie, but Sweetie
just rolled over on his back and said, "Isn't it about time you
rubbed my tummy?"

1067.13 | another Pet Essentials endorsement | HUMOR::EPPES | Make 'em laugh | Thu Jan 28 1988 17:32 | 19 |
| Jasper, my Persian, simply HATES to be combed. At least, he hates it
when *I* do it. So I bring him to a groomer every so often to make
sure any potential mats that I miss are taken care of. Having just
moved to Nashua, I had to find another groomer, and ended up with
Desiree Malouin (mentioned in .8), who was suggested to me by none
other than Zhivagocat Lady "ET" Elaine Trachman. Pet Essentials,
the name of the grooming establishment, is actually in the back room
of a pet store called PETcetera (298 Derry St., Rte. 102, Hudson, NH),
and ET is chums with PETcetera's owner (who is not the same woman who
owns Pet Essentials).
I took Jasper to Pet Essentials a couple weeks ago, and he came out
looking fine, with a cute yellow bow around his neck. Darn reasonable
price, too! ($20) I'll be taking him back there...

P.S. Oh, the phone number for Pet Essentials is (603)889-3790.
