| First of all, your doing the right thing. Take time to plan what
you want first.
For some ideas, Cats Magazine Exhibitors Edition has a section in
"Cat World" that shows different catteries around the world. Gives
floor plans, space layouts, etc. A great place to get some ideas.
Also, you might want to find breeders around you who may have set
up catteries. Plan a few visits, and talk to them about the positives
and negatives their cattery plans offer.
My cattery is a large room finished off in the cellar. It has one
large space for all the females to run, and a walk-in pen for Fire,
my stud male. I only have seven cats, so my requirements are not
as large as some other breeders. There is plenty of space for me
to set up large cages when I have mothers and kittens, although
I usually raise the kittens upstairs rather than the cattery. (I
usually have only one litter at a time.) I have a deep laundry
sink in the cattery for filling bowls, cleaning, or washing the
cats.
The cellar isn't exceptionally cold, so in the winter we heat with
one of those oil filled radiators style heaters running on the lowest
temperature. Just keeps the chill out. Of course, their beds,
litter boxes and food dishes are all there.
My kids are very happy with their space.

Please, keep the ideas coming, my cattery isn't quite finished yet.

This sounds wonderful, can someone suggest where I can find this magazine?
I've looked in two libraries and they have Cats Magazine but not the
Exhibitors Edition. Anyone willing to photocopy articles or lend me
their issues so I can make my own copies?
I work at PKO3 and my husband works at ZKO2 if that helps. Thank yo
in advance.
Anybody else have suggestions for me, this doesn't seem to have stirred
up lots of replies! Some specific questions are:
How much space should each cat/dog have?
Recommended floor material (concrete, linoleum, etc.)
Nifty water devices (one suggestion was a Lick-it, any others?)
For fencing, what gauge or size?
I know there's a lot of expertise out there, please feel free to offer
anything you know! Thanks.

| Hi there again Jan!!!
Let's arrange a time, and I will bring in the past 1 and 1/2 years
worth of CATS Exhibitor Edition -- we can meet at Thompson ST.
entrance, okay? I don't remember if every issue has cattery info,
but I do remember seeing some of the diagrams.
I'm also interested, because I will be moving soon...and the
1st requirement was a place for cats (basement for cattery, but
all-over-the-house in general, of course!), and 2nd was
proximity to the vet. Try explaining THAT to a broker ;-) ;-)

We've been looking for a house since October, and I'm sure the
various brokers we've been dealing with think we are nuts --
I can't tell you the number of houses we've seen that are just
what we wanted EXCEPT that there is no way we can give our dogs
and cats a proper setup. Land just drops off behind (and beside)
the house, no way to put out a dog run or build a proper kennel/
cattery. They are being patient because they have so few buyers
anyway, but I know they don't understand our commitment to our
pets.

| re: .3
I'd be inclined to go with a washable floor like Solarian. More
comfy, probably, than concrete, and more aesthetic. I've had it
in my kitchen for maybe a year and two pusses scidding(sp?) to halts
and so forth haven't harmed it. I've got a dark brown/red tile
pattern, so you're not stuck with "kitchen" looking stuff.

| As I said in .2, my cattery is still in process. I am planning on
using a no-wax solarian/linoleum.
In the meantime, since we are still working on completing the room,
something had to be done with the cement floor. It was so dusty
and dry.
We put down two fairly thick coats of polyurethane on the floor.
It worked great!!! Makes the floor easy to wash, and also sealed
it so that it wouldn't absorb odors (in case of accidents!).
It's funny, though, when I bring someone down to the cattery to
see the cats...they always ask if the floor is wet!!!
still looking for ideas
