1050.1 | Sometimes there's no choice! | DISSRV::GERRY | Go ahead, make me PURRR... | Thu Jan 21 1988 11:13 | 14 |
| Unfortunately, sometimes it is necessary to ship our kitties when
we can't fly with them.
If you need to ship a cat and can't be with them, PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE
be waiting for the pet when they arrive. If the airline is aware
that an animal is coming and there is someone WAITING for it, they
definitely take better care. At least this has been my experience.
When I have shipped a cat to someone, I also wait at the cargo area
with the cat so that it gets put on last thing, just before the
plane is leaving.

1050.2 | When you must ship, try P.D.Q. | LAIDBK::SHERRICK | Molly :^) | Thu Jan 21 1988 13:07 | 18 |
| Whenever I have to ship an animal by plane, I use the P.D.Q. service
that many of the airlines offer. When you use this service you
take the animal to the people check-in counter, and the person picking
up the animal picks it up at the odd size baggage claim just as
if they had flown with the animal. The advantage to this service
is that you don't need to get the cat to the airport 3 hours ahead
of time (which many airlines require if shipping from the freight
office) AND the cat doesn't get left on the loading dock AT ALL.
The cat is hand carried to the boarding area, and then loaded on
the plane after the last luggage is loaded.
Some airlines will even ship your cat in the cabin with a flight
attendant watching out for it.
It's definately worth asking about, and DO check with several airlines
for prices - they aren't all the same. For P.D.Q. shipping, I have
been very happy with Delta.

Thank goodness we had such good luck with Frosty's trip from
Amarillo, via Dallas, to Boston (there were NO direct flights,
alas, and I waited nervously all day).
We used the "priority" service also. It cost about twice what
regular baggage would have cost, but little (well, medium) Frosty
had good service! He was hand carried last-on, first-off at each
stop. When he arrived in Boston, he was quite calm and curious,
and was hand carried (before *any* of the regular luggage had yet
appeared) through a special door for odd-size packages [What! My
Frosty "odd-sized"???]. The baggage handler was holding Frosty's
carrier as if it contained a million dollars worth of fragile
crystal glass, or his own baby, perhaps!
After hearing about the horror stories, I'll pay for PRIORITY
every time -- if I can't persuade someone to take the cat in
the cabin!

1050.4 | Question??? | SHARE::SSMITH | | Tue Jan 26 1988 12:28 | 20 |
| At what point would you NOT take a cat or small dog with you in
the cabin (if allowed) and ship instead???? The reason I ask is
as follows:
At the beginning of this month, I was at logan to see someone off
on a flight to Las Vagas. While waiting for them to board, I saw
a woman there who was taking a small dog (unknown what kind) along
with her. The dog was in a carrier. Although it was hard to tell,
it probably wasn't much bigger than a large cat. Here's the riff.
The poor little dog was almost litterally STUFFED into this carrier.
He/she couldn't have had more than an inch and a half on any side
to spare. He/she couldn't streach out, HAD to lay on it's side because
there wasn't enough room for it to even lay on it's stomach, and
was clawing to get out. There was an hours wait before boarding,
the flight was an hour late taking off, and it was a five hour flight
to St. Louis (the first stop). Who knows if she was continuing on
from there. That's a minimum 7 hours in there. It really made me
furious.

1050.5 | When SIZE is too big! | DISSRV::GERRY | Go ahead, make me PURRR... | Tue Jan 26 1988 12:56 | 10 |
| I prefer to ship Fire because he's so big. He goes 18 lbs or so,
and it's too squishy in those "under the seat" carriers that they
allow on board. So, when I send him in cargo, he can travel in
a larger carrier with a little more room, litter box, food, water,
etc. He's much happier this way!!!
Was this person going to carry the dog on???

| RE: .5
Yes, she was taking the dog on board with her. It just seemed
very curel to me. To my knowledge, you can't let the animal out
while your on the plane, so he had to be in there a minimum of 7
hours.

| re: .6 and letting the animal out of cage in flight
Right - you're not supposed to let the animal out, and I suppose
sneaking a dog out would be more difficult that holding a cat on
your lap.
Cute story: one of my friends who flies alot to cat shows has
also taught her cat to use the toilet, and so on one airplane
trip, she took the cat back to the lavatory and placed him on
the seat (on four paws, I assume, not seated, but who knows???).
As she was standing in front of the door, which opens in, she
didn't bother to lock it. Man suddenly opens door, pushing
human behind door, out of sight: man sees cat using toilet!
Man says "Um, um, excuse me, um" and beats a hasty retreat.
I don't even care if it is true. I love it!
[did I read that here in FELINE, or discuss it over the phone?
sometimes all these cat stories fade together. or did I dream it???]

Penelope,
I just love the title you gave to this reply - "exercise flying
pets in lavatory!". Sort of sounds like a headline in the Inquiror.
I can just see it now ...
Ghost of Elvis seen exercising flying pets in lavatory!

Penelope,
Actually, P, I was born here at Digital. At least I _think_ I was,
as I have no recall of anything before my very first USERID, PASSWORD.
Is there life before Digital? But that is a topic for the Philosophy
conference.
Funny you should bring it up, though, 'cause I am about to find
out if there is life _after_ Digital. Tomorrow is my last day here.
Since I am a contractor, I will probably be back eventually. Just
when that will be in unclear at this time. My wedding is in six weeks
and then the honeymoon (can't wait). I may not be able to find a six
week contract to fill in before the wedding, so I guess I might
have some "bench time". After the honeymoon I'll just have to see
what comes my way. You can be sure that I'll be popping right back
in here at FELINE at my earliest opportunity.
My love to you all and all your furries.
With love,
Marion Daly

| First of all, you really know you were born here when you can't
remember anything before your first PPN and PASSWORD! PPNs pre-date
USERIDs by about 50 or 60 years (or so it seems....).
Marion, you can't leave! What about little Biscie? We're gonna
miss all the kitten stories!! WAHHHHH!!! Gee, we'll sure miss
you around the ole notesfile...sniff, sniff. But hopefully, you'll
be back "on-line" before too long.
The boys and I wish you all the best in your marriage (although
Honey can't understand why you'd want to live with a man) and we
hope to see you back soon!
Wishing you the best of everything,
Mary, Honey and Chauncey
