*Any* household pet cat is eligible to compete for the Morris award (as
long as they are neutered, *not* declawed nor devocalized, and there's
probably a minimum age limit). It's not limited to Morris look-alikes.
What's most important is the cat's personality and condition.
(If Elaine wins with Pashenka, she'd better remember my percentage (^8 !)

| Boy, oh boy. I was going to enter my adorable two babies but you
just blew that idea. They are declawed. Of course, Lightning would
have won hands down (only joking)(proud Mom).
Good luck Elaine. Keep us informed.

1018.5 | this is a NATIONAL competition | AQUA::GOLDMAN | Matt Goldman | Thu Jan 07 1988 12:21 | 16 |
| Sorry guys, this is not the what you think it is!
Elaine is refering to the *National* Morris Award Competition. To qualify, the
kitty must have ALREADY won a Morris Trophy at a local show.
Last year, regional cat shows for Morris Award winners only were held around
the country to select semi-finalists. A national show of semi-finalists was
then held, although I'm not sure when since I didn't enter Addison in the
regional show (the closest was in Washington, D.C.).
This year they dropped the regional shows and instead are asking for essays and
pictures. The committee will select semi-finalists from the essays.
I don't think the response has been too great because I received a phone call
last week reminding me to send in the essay by next week ... and I'm too lazy
to think about writing an essay!

1018.6 | Thanks, Matt! | TOPDOC::TRACHMAN | | Thu Jan 07 1988 13:48 | 21 |
| Thanks for explaining that, Matt. I forgot that there are new
HHP exhibitors.
The committee called me here at work a couple of days ago also.
You are right - the response had not been wonderful. I told
them what I thought of the new procedures - I won't go into
the political details of why and how the changes came about,
but I was told what the two choices were. I was VERY disappointed
not to be able to participate in a semi-final. I think that it
really much more fair to have the animals actually seen and handled
by a judge. I know that a picture is worth a thousand words, BUT
seeing the animal in person, in some cases, is MUCH better.
I felt guilty after they called me - I also felt that my two
kids very much deserved the opportunity that they worked so
hard to earn - I owed it to them as their person. We are
going to have a photo session tonight (talk about last minute!)
we need to submit a photo of the cat and a photo of the cat,
the Morris Trophy, with the owner (proof of ownership of the cat
having the owner in the pic) along with the 100 word essay.
Thanks for the support folks - I'm not too hopeful - but one
never knows about these things, do one??

1018.7 | Brother competing Sister | TOPDOC::TRACHMAN | | Thu Jan 07 1988 14:42 | 20 |
| Gee Ray, I don't know if we can afford your cut!!!!!
Anyhoo, speaking of my most beautiful red baby boy,
does your mother-in-law live anywhere near Gilford CT
or Torrington CT - please let me know - I will probably
enter Pasha in both of those shows - they seem to be
2 of the few around that allow me to enter kittens
(except for Chalet of course) - the 2 CT shows are
in March/April I think - will mom be in the area
or still traveling? If I enter him during this
season, he will be competing against his two
sisters - not a great idea this close to the end
of the season!! Actually, I wanted to enter him
in Cats-Plain & Fancy in Boston this February,
but CFA doesn't let us enter HHP kittens -
neither does the Plymouth Show. It's enough
of a problem that Katenka usually beats her
sister Lara - gee, what's a mother to do!!

| Here's my rather late addition to this note. I'm still so far behind
in reading this file.
I entered Amelia in the National competion. Anguished over writing
the essay. Its soooo hard to chop it down to 100 words. Sent the
pictures, waited. Got my rejection notice a few weeks ago.
A friend of mine (who has umpteen Morris Awards for each of her
marvelous kitties) got rejection notices on several of her cats
too. If anyone was going to be included I thought she would.
Her cat "Her Royal Highness Lydianna, Duchess of Padwell" did compete
in the finals in New York last year. Did not win tho'. The cat
who did win the National last year also won the Semi-Final in DC
I went to the semi-finals in DC and Seattle last year. That was
alot of fun even though I really couldn't afford it and didn't win.
There has got to be a better way than essays. I was never good
at them in school either. Maybe next time I can talk my kitty into
writing her own essay. Would probably be better than the one I
wrote.

1018.9 | Does anyone know who DID win?? | EDUCA8::TRACHMAN | | Mon Mar 07 1988 11:07 | 14 |
| Hi Jan - most of my friends showing HHPs also agree that there
should be a better way than essay writing. We thought it strange
that the Morris folk wanted pictures of "US" and the cats!
Guess if they didn't like the way the owner looked, maybe
they didn't final the cat? I submitted Yurii & Lara for
this year's competion, but we received rejections also.
If they run it the same way next year as this year,
I don't think we will participate. I am of the opinion
that they are not judging the cats if they don't gather
them for an actual show and actually see the cats in person.
I don't think they can tell as much from a photo as they could
by seeing all the cats together as they did in previous years.
