Hi Everyone,
This morning something frightening happened.
Every morning Asia crawls under the covers with me and sleeps with
me before I have to get up (usually just for 20 or so minutes -
the rest of the night she sleeps on top of my head on the pillow).
Anyway, this morning she was sleeping and I got up to take a shower,
usually she comes in the bathroom with me or is scratching to get
in after the water goes off, but this morning she kept sleeping.
I pulled the covers back and she was STILL sleeping. About 2 minutes
later she rolled out of bed and she started panting like a dog thru
her mouth. I didn't know what was going on. I think she almost
suffercated!!! Never again will I let her sleep under the blankets
again without me being there.
Has this ever happened to anyone else?
If anything ever happens to her....Life without Asia - I can't imagine
it.

I've never had this happen but my kitty (Obi) sleeps under blankets
all the time. Was the electric blanket still on? She was probably
over heated from the blanket. I don't beleive she could suffocate,
she would know better to get out from under it. I think between
the heat from the blanket just made her very sleepy and over heated
(that is if it was still on).

| 1017.2 | Nebula thought it was a great treat | CADSYS::RICHARDSON | Wed Jan 06 1988 13:07 | 23 | |
Nebula was so sore from getting all her shots at the vet yesterday (JFCL
got hers, too, of course, but Nebula gets somewhat sick from getting
her booster shots - I can sympathize with her since I get sick from
some of mine, too - my last typhoid booster is one of the WORST!). The
poor critter would cry if I stroked her shoulder, refused to eat,
etc. So, instead of letting her sleep on top of the bedspread as
usual, I put her under it, on top of the electric blanket, so she
would be nice and warm (since the furnace is shut off at night -
she loves to sit on the hot air ducts when it is on, so I didn't
think she'd get too hot). She thought this was great, since she
usually isn't allowed to do that, and, as far as I can tell, she
spent the whole night there (I woke up several times - I've been
having a tough week with sinus problems because it is so cold and
dry out, even with the humidifer going full-blast, and one in my
cube here at work, too). She was MUCH better this morning, when
she and I crawled out from under the covers more or less at the
same time (her other pet human was already afoot by then), looking
sleepy, and she chowed down her breakfast in great style (JFCL got
her share, but then, The Fickle ate Nebula's dinner as well as her
own, so she wasn't too bossy). I never leave the blanket on when
no one is under it, and I don't usually allow kitties right on the
blanket when it is on, but I thought it would help make her feel
better, sort of like a hot pad.

Yes, the blanket was on. It think it was on 3 or 4. That is pretty
high for a kitty. It was so cold in my apt this morning that I
wasn't thinking. Never Again.
You're right she proberly wouldn't suffocate, but the way she was
breathing scared me. After she caught her breath I gave her some
cold water and she wouldn't touch it. Forget about eating breakfast
too.

| 1017.4 | Maybe.......... | AIMHI::OFFEN | Wed Jan 06 1988 17:45 | 5 | |
Maybe she is coming down with something and sleeping is her way
of fighting it. I know it's my way.

My cat tries gets under the covers also, but I don't
allow her to stay under there because you never know. She could
fall asleep and suffocate. I don't recommend it.
