999.0. "My cat eats everything!" by CSSE::MCKINNON () Wed Dec 30 1987 14:23

Reading a previous note prompted me to write my own comments
on this subject. It seems like a lot of you are concerned with
which food is best to feed our little furry friends............
    ash content, etc.

I have a cat (kitty, yes, it is original, isn't it?) who is
20 years old going on 3. This cat is remarkable. She loves to
play with her string. She eats everything in sight, drinks enough
water to satisfy a human and does her little duties in her box very
    regularly.

My point is, is that my cat has eaten everything from turkey
and bacon (her two very favorites) to friskies buffet, tender vittles
(sp?) to Amore, to any kind of people food she can get her hands
on. We have a dog who lies patiently near the dinner table to wait
for any scraps that might be left behind. Once Kitty watched this
ritual, she decided (in that little pea brain of hers) that if she
waited patiently too, she was entitled to whatever was leftover
    as well.

Sooooo, after dinner the treats get split up between Tuna (the
dog) and Kitty and they both get to indulge. When Kitty is done
and doesn't quite care for the particular treat, then Tuna gets
the rest. I have seen this 20 year old cat eat everything from
spaghetti to swordfish (she loves any fish) to steak, to potatoes
    to..........

She is now (a new thing) into Burger King cheeseburgers. Again,
my point is that I feel if Kitty likes it she can have it. She
has always had table scraps and she has always eaten wet food.
She, in fact, refuses to eat the dry stuff. I don't think she likes
    to crunch it?????

Anyway, just my thought after living a loooonnnngggg wonderful
    life with my baby.

Well, last night Pashenka took the cake - I was nuking some
canned asparagus - before I put the saran wrap on the bowl,
he reached in with his infamous right snag, and grabbed a
pawful and ATE THEM! YUK, this guy is a real garbageGUMS!
I can hardly wait to take him to Torrington - his Grammy
is going to come to the show to visit him - (that's the
nice lady (Ray F. Mom-in-Law) that gave him to me - I
have to hear for myself just what this guy ate when he
lived with her! This monkey turns his nose up at NOTHING!

Nikolas and Alexandra did the same thing last week with the fresh
asparagus that I had just cooked. Also, Alex has a "thing" for
broccoli. I wonder if this has to do with their remembering their
    days as a stray/feral.

Maybe outdoor cats are used to eating veggies when the mouse supply
is low, as in outdoor cats without food to go home to.

    Maybe?

Last night, I made a bowl of tomato soup and placed it on the coffee
table along with a package of Saltine crackers, which I had just
opened. Off I went to the potty and returned moments later to find
Honey holding a cracker up to his mouth with one of his paws and
little Chauncey slurping up my soup! They looked up at me, Honey
with crumbs in his fur, Chauncey with tomato soup in his whiskers...
hmph, I guess I wasn't that hungry anyhow....

Sure...I can identify with this topic!!

Cookie likes Twinkies about as much as anything...but Entenmann's
Oatmeal cookies are also on the top of her list.

Smokie is the veggie freak, but almost anything on a T.V. tray is
fair game. He'll sit there and if he gets something OFFERRED to him
it's as if we're insulting him...but if something just "happens" to
"fall" off the plate in range, then he'll happily 'steal' it...

I made the mistake of buying some of that smoked salmon that recently
appeared in the supermarket....the stuff that comes in "cajun", BBQ,
Dill, Peppered, and plain....NICE stuff, but rather expensive... Well,
Smokie and Cookie perched themselves beside the tray and actually took
turns scarfing it up.... "your piece, Cooks!", "O.K., Smoker, You grab
the next one!" ...Between the two of them, I got about 1/4th of the
1/4lb piece of it...no real preference on the flavors either....they
    like'em all!!

My Pumpkin pie was really neat....tongue marks all through the
whipped cream on the top---or what was left of it... Between these two
ther wasn't much!! Cookie likes whipped cream so much she licks it up
wiht her eyes closed in absolute extacy!!

999.14A few cat tales...AUKLET::MEIERCollector of Glass InsulatorsWed Nov 28 1990 11:3928
Well, most of the human food that Tigger has been known to eat has been listed
already, but I can think of a few related anecdotes to add that I wish I had
on tape!

A while back I had made us (Bill, Tigger, and myself :-)) prime rib for dinner.
Sometimes after dinner we get distracted; I was in the living room (close to
the kitchen) doing something, and heard kitty noises in the kitchen. Oops, I
forgot to wrap up the bones. I rush into the kitchen to see Tigger on the
counter with this massive foot-long bone in his mouth, staring at me and
ready to jump off the counter with the bone!

A few weeks ago I brought some Peking Duck home (takeout) from our friendly
neighborhood Chinese restaurant. As I sat down to feast, Tigger was several
times as wild as he usually is when we're eating dinner. He usually alternates
between sitting on the floor staring and putting his paws (claws partly out,
ouch!) on our legs, occasionally trying to grab the fork or food. This time he
kept trying to climb into my lap frantically. I think he must have known how
expensive Peking Duck is! (well, either that or duck smells especially good
:-)).

One more, I promise :-). The other day I had poured myself some egg nog at the
table and turned around to do something else. Bill was at the table, so I
figured it was ok. Soon, I heard Bill saying "Now Tigger, it's not nice to
drink Jill's egg nog". He was standing on my chair, front paws on the table,
lapping at my glass. Of course, I was more upset at Bill for letting him get
away with it :-).

    What does Sweetie eat???

anything that doesn't eat him first!!!!

Actually, his absolute favorite thing is PEAS!! He LOVES them! I had
put a can of them in a bowl and turned around to get the corn out of
the microwave so I could put those in. I turned around and there was
sweetie eating the peas out of the bowl. I took them away from him and
he kept trying to fight me for them!! I scooped out where he was
eating and gave it to him. Then microwaved the rest. What a CRAZY
cat! Now every time we have peas, he's all over me!!

999.17nibbles anyone?FORTSC::WILDEillegal possession of a GNUFri Nov 30 1990 16:5213
Let me see.....

The flash (AKA Mandy when she is being sweet) has a strong liking for green
olives - steals them and then sits nibbling on them while growling quite
fiercely to keep the others from stealing her treasure - not that anyone
else of the furry variety would want to!

Hannah has developed quite a taste for pecans and will even break into them
to get her treat. She is on a diet so I have to keep them away from her.

Sam is fond of popcorn - but only if it is the butter-flavored variety.

Other than that, totally normal cats.

I did forget one other thing that sweetie loves. He'll KILL for
Cheezits!! You can't eat them in peace!! He'll even try to take them
out of your mouth. It's a RIOT, but it's a real pain!

Guess he's just like his mom. I love them too! (-:

Freckles, our occicat will eat anything I eat.

When I show him something like squash, tomatoes, fruit that "of
course" cats don't eat ... slurp ... down it goes. Meat I can
understand. But baked potatoe? Any kind of cracker is fine too.
Because he will try anything I have to be careful of sweets.
    I figure veggies have vitamins.
