917.0. "worms" by FIDDLE::HTAYLOR (Fight malnutrition, GIMME CHOCOLATE!) Tue Nov 24 1987 12:41

Last saturday Tabbatha went to the Vets to get her second shots.
I asked the vet about her fat belly and he said that she had worms.
(which is what I thought it was). Anyway, he have her some medicine
and just said that she may have runny stools for about a day.

Now my understanding about worms was that she would have to be given
medicine more than once. I thought I would have to give her the
medicine at home. But he said that that was all she need.

My question is, How long will it take for the worms to clear up?
I have checked her stools and haven't seen any worms. Her Belly
is still fat. Any info on worms? If this is discussed in another
note, please point me to it.

    Thanks.

I think it depends on what kind of worms the cat has. I took one
of my cats to the vets a little while ago for something else and
also got some medicine for worms -- he gave her some medicine and
then when I got home I gave some to my other cat and then 3 weeks
later I had to give them the remainder of the medicine.

As I understand it, the first dose kills the live worms and then
the 2nd dose kills the eggs.

917.3Stool sample?OPUS::STYLIANOSTue Nov 24 1987 19:5017
Did you vet look at a stool sample? If not I would question how
he knew the worms were there or what kind they were.

The most common worms are known as 'round worms' or ascirids (sp)
they only can be killed in there mature state and fortunatly
there is a breif period between them becomming vulnerable and
beginning to lay eggs. My Vet used to recommend 3 cycles
    (I believe 10 days appart).

If you are sure they are round worms (we had a recurrent problem)
either by seeing the in the stools or vomit (look like spaghetti)
and wish to save a couple of dollars Hartz once a month wormer
works good, and the Capsules contain a powder that can be mixed
    with food.

My very first cat away from home, Taboo, was infested with tape
worms. The vet gave her one shot and they never showed up again.
I thought I would have to go through a medicine ordeal also, but
maybe modern science fixed all that!

My new cat, Alexander II, had a stool sample analyzed for worms when he
was at Tufts for severe FUS, and it was negative. Then several weeks
after I brought him home, I noticed a small worm on his fur around his
tail. It looked like a small piece of spaghetti. My vet said it was a
tapeworm segment which would have not showed up in the stool sample.
The treatment was a single dose (either by shot or pill) of Droncit.

He still has a fat belly and eats like a piglet, so I'm wondering
whether he should have another stool analysis. I'll ask my vet when I
take him back for his checkup. (Poor guy had severe FUS, both blockage
and raging infection -- when that cleared, he came down with severe
upper respiratory infection which he must have picked up at the
    hospital.)
