912.0. "Thanks to the Uxbridge Firefighters, a kitty lives" by TOPDOC::TRACHMAN () Mon Nov 23 1987 13:12

Did anyone by chance read about the fireman and policeman from
Uxbridge Mass that saved a kitty? If not, the story goes
    something like this.

Jeff Stanovich and James Barth were in the Veteran's Day
Parade in Uxbridge when they were called away from the
parade to help put out a house fire. Turns out that the
fire was in the kitchen, the people were not home during
this mess. When the firefighters entered the kitchen,
they found a little black longhaired (young) cat on the
kitchen floor by the back door. The two men grabbed the
cat and ran back to the truck, resuscitated the kitty
using oxygen and a bag. After the kitty came to, they
put it in the cruiser - when they finished with the fire,
they went back to the cruiser and found the kitty climbing
all over the seats having a great time and feeling just fine.

The Allbreed Cat Club of the Northeast honored these two
wonderful men this weekend at their Cat Show in Cumberland R.I.
Plaques were given to both men to honor their heroic deed.
Jenny Williams (Bryan William's wife) made a very beautiful
ceramic cat on a base and painted the names of the two men
on the base. The black ceramic kitty was presented to them
also - they will put it in a place of honor either in the
firehouse or the Town Hall. After spending most of the day
at the show, both men were amazed at the depth of caring
that people had for cats. Everyone there must have thanked
them at least 3 times for showing such compasion for this
little kitty. They kept saying that it was their responsibility
to save live things - people or animals. I sure hope all
firefighters feel and ACT the same way.

Glad that they got some kudos for their effort. I have always
wondered how I would get my five out if something happened.

912.2FIRE...Would your kitties be saved??FIDDLE::GERRYGo ahead, make me PURRR...Mon Nov 23 1987 13:2635
Just wondering....How many of you out there have informed the Fire
Fighters for your district, town, city, or whatever about your cats??

Several years ago I got some stickers from Friends of Animals to
be stuck on the door of the house that tells the Fire Fighters to
look for X number of Cats or Dogs.

I moved over the last few weeks, and now have my Cattery in the
cellar of my home. I am very worried about what would happen if
I did have a fire....Would they be able to find the cats fast enough,
would they try to get them out, would they even know they were there???
This bothered me enough that I called the Fire Station closest to
my house (the one that would respond should there be a fire!) and
asked if I could have them put some type of flag on my address that
should there be a problem, they would try to save the cats first.
They were very nice, and seemed pleased to be able to help. They
came to the house and got a tour of my cattery and were treated
to purrs and snuggles from all my cats. I feel much better because
I have had some personal contact with the people who will help my
cats out in case we have this type of emergency.

It never hurts to be too prepared!!! I am still terrified of what
would happen should there be a fire in my house, but at least I
feel I have tried to do everything possible to protect my furry
    friends should it happen.

So, has anyone else done anything like this??? What was the response??

Moderators, if you feel this should be the beginning of a new note,
please feel free to move this.

I made mini-posters, about 4 inches on a side, with a big red border,
that say: In case of emergency, please rescue two cats. I have
these slightly above doorknob level on all the doors of the house,
and on the floor-to-ceiling bay window, in case they have to get
in that way. Of course, the cats would probably be hiding, esp.
Sweetie, so I fear that this might not help much.

Around my house we have fire drills. I set up the smoke detector
on the hall with tape over the "test" button to make it go off
continually. This is what I figure would happen in real life.
For some reason, this causes all my fuzzy ones to come running to
the hall where the alarm is. Then, they each get stuffed into their
own pillow case (for some reason, they sort of like this) and out the
    door we go.

912.5Great Ideas !TOPDOC::TRACHMANMon Nov 30 1987 10:1520
I, too, wonder what would happen if there was a fire. Catching
11 - oops! we are now an even dozen! - would be very difficult.
Most of my neighbors know about my kids (they call me the Cat Lady)
so I think that they would inform firefighters and probably help
    get them out.

When I was giving the fireman his ceramic kitty, the show mgr.
wanted me to say some stuff to him - all I could think of to
say was Thank You - I hope it was enough. This fellow had
never seen so many beautiful cats in one place in his life
and was quite overwhelmed - even more surprised when I pointed
out the Household Pets and explained that most were strays
adopted from Shelters. I feel very privileged to have had the
opportunity to say thanks to these two people from every cat
    owner!

Fire drills, signs, visting your local fire stations are really
great ideas - I hope everyone takes heed - I shudder to think.....
