895.0. "Pet Overpopulation - WBZ tonight" by SQM::MURPHY (Is it Friday yet?) Fri Nov 13 1987 15:41

If anyone gets a chance to listen to WBZ (Boston, MA) radio station
tonight, the Peter Mead show (I think it starts at 6PM) will be
having a guest on from the MSPCA. They will be discussing the "Pet
Overpopulation" problem and how to deal with it. Callers will be able
to ask questions also, I understand.

    Should be interesting.

Just some input on this show which actually covered two subjects
of concern. First half dealt with the homeless people in the streets
and the second half of the show was the Pet Overpopulation problem
in the country. Two guests from the MSPCA (don't remember names)
were there to answer callers' questions. Unfortunately, due to
so many ads and station breaks, time was limited and not too many
callers got through (I could not get through myself).

The guests did cover most of the issues though and did state the
reason they get so many dogs and cats turned in to them (or abandoned)
is that too many people don't take pets into their homes on a
"permanent" basis. When their life style changes or they move on
to someplace else, the pet(s) must go. Unfortunately, these same
people sometimes replace the ones they've parted with when their
life style slows down again. So unfair to the animals!

A pet should only be considered as a permanent member of the family
    or not considered at all.

Spaying/neutering is the most important thing you can do for your
pet when you get it, if it is not of breeding quality with good
bloodlines. I believe it was Debra Lawlor (one of the newscasters
on WBZ) who mentioned she has two cats of her own she adopted from
a shelter. When she adopted one, in particular, it was nursing
some kittens at the time so she made arrangements to have it spayed
by her Vet. However, when the Vet examined the cat, he informed
her that it would be quite difficult to spay the cat since it was
a "male"! She did have it neutered though, but I thought it was
an unusual story that you'd enjoy.

It seems the MSPCA is also involved with wildlife issues all over the
country; not limited to Massachusetts. They are involved with "trying
to discourage" baby seal killings, setting traps which often kill
and/or dismember dogs & cats, killing off natural predators such as the
wolf so game will be available for man to hunt, and the list goes on.

I was disappointed though that WBZ had the poor taste to advertise
"furs" during the timeframe MSPCA were on their show and wrote them
    accordingly.
