A friend of mine wants to get another cat but is concerned about leukemia being brought in. She says the cat has been tested and is negative but has also heard that the virus wouldn't show in the test because the incubation period is 2 months after being infected so a cat just tested may show negative. Does anyone know how long you have to wait before the cat is really negative. I've heard the virus would show within 3-4 weeks, and others have heard 3 months. Everything I have heard is different. cathy

I got a new kitten a two months ago and had the same concern. After pouring all my love into Tucker (and about $700 to get him thru FUS) I didn't want to jepardize his health. My vet told me it takes 2-3 weeks for the virus to incubate. I was very lucky in that I got Sadie when she was so small they could not even do the test until 2 weeks after I got her anyway (can't find the vein to draw blood when they're that small - less than one pound). Thankfully she turned out negative. Now if I could just get Sadie to mellow out! She is the most hyper-active animal I have ever seen. I come to work with battle scars all over my hands and arms from her pouncing on me and wrestling with me. Oh well, at least she's finally healthy and seems very happy. Good Luck! Sue | |||||

Sue- trim her nails! Works wonders, as she can still pounce and play, but you don't scarred up. After the first time or two (starting with a kitten) they get used to it, although they never get to enjoy it (in my experience.) MM |
