863.1 | Does she have diarrhea? | SQM::MURPHY | Is it Friday yet? | Thu Oct 29 1987 13:35 | 19 |

Hi, Michele. I know my longhaired cat has had a rare problem in
that after she'd use the box (my 3 are strictly indoor cats) she
sometimes might have some droppings stick to the long hairs under
the anus. I try to keep the hair under that area trimmed short
and wash it if she does have the same problem. Usually she takes
care of cleaning herself but sometimes they do need help in that
area.
My older cat (shorthaired) has had the same problem (on occasion)
but unlike my female, he's too lazy to clean himself so I have to
do it with wet toilet paper. Just like having to clean up babies.
You didn't say if the "stuff" was all over your cat or in a particular
area. Does she seem to have a diarrhea problem? I'm not sure how
she'd get it on her in cat fights unless the other cats were throwing
it at her. :-)

| Pat-
no this stuff is solid and tangled on her sides, legs, tummy - its
everywhere! She hates it when I come near her with a wet paper
towel- a fate worse than death. It was actually easier to give
her a bath (by myself) than to fight her with a paper towel (with
my boyfriend). I was wondering if the baths would be bad for her,
espicially since she is out 24 hrs a day, or if I should just let
her do her thing (but could she get sick from this?). When she
was a baby, her mommy abandoned her, and I had to catch her w/ the
T.P., like you mentioned-no problem there....its just this way
of coming home is.......:-(
Michele
p.s.
I think the other cats are sabotaging her when she does her thing
outside, therefore rolling around in it.

863.3 | Be sure she's dry | SQM::MURPHY | Is it Friday yet? | Thu Oct 29 1987 14:26 | 10 |

Gee, Michele. I don't know what to say. Sounds like she's rolling
in the stuff (which is not too cool for a cat to do). As for bathing
her, I'd say it wouldn't hurt as long as she was thoroughly dry
before going out again. Maybe some other notes have some knowledge
on this.
Good luck!

863.4 | Powder and Comb | FIDDLE::GERRY | Go ahead, make me PURRR... | Thu Oct 29 1987 14:28 | 8 |
| You might try some dry pet shampoo or baby powder -- apply it to
the area, then comb or brush out the doo doos!!!
This works when one of my persians has a problem...unless it's a
"real mess"!!!

| Well, I have a friend who gives her cat a bath fairly often because
his fur is quite oily. It doesn't seem to cause him any harm.
But he is an indoor cat. There has to be a better solution than
this, though. (Of course, the other cats must be a mess too, if
that's any consolation.....)

| I had heard if you wash a cat too much, they stop cleaning them
selves. Nippa is a very, very clean cat- she is always cleaning
herself, except when this happens. She always looks good, and I
would hate to have her stop. Maybe I'll try the dry pet shampoo
and a comb- is there a special pet comb I'd need.....any other
suggestionto this messy situation?

863.7 | GREAT COMB! | MORGAN::JSMITH | | Thu Oct 29 1987 16:21 | 20 |
| I BOUGHT A SMALL VERSION OF THE TYPE OF COMB THEY USE TO BRUSH HORSES.
IT IS A "U" SHAPED PIECE OF METAL WITH A HANDLE AND WITH SAW TEETH ON
1 END OF THE METAL .
MY SIAMESE LOVES IT (UP TO A POINT. WHEN SHE HAS HAD ENOUGH BRUSHING
SHE LET'S IT BE KNOWN.) YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL NOT TO BRUSH TOO
HARD SO YOU DON'T SCRATCH THE SKIN BUT I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM.
I BRUSH HER EVERY OTHER DAY AND IT AMAZING THE LOOSE HAIR THIS COMB
TAKES OUT. THE ONLY THING IS YOU HAVE TO USE IT OUTSIDE BECAUSE
THE LOOSE HAIR JUST FLOATS AROUND WHEN IT IS BRUSHED OFF. IT'S NOT
LIKE A BRUSH THAT CATCHED THE HAIR.
IT IS SOMEWHAT EXPENSIVE, ABOUT $8.00 @ BREADERS PRIDE OR OTHER
SPECIALTY STORE BUT IT IS WELL WORTH IT!!!!
GOOD LUCK!

| Are you sure it is Cat poop?
Sounds like she might be rolling in something she likes (like dogs
do).
