                       STOP THAT HISSING!!!!

O.k. is there anyone that know hows to stop a cat from hissing
or try to correct that sort of behaviour? 3-way has been with us
for about 2 weeks and the two sisters Malcolm & Angus seemed to
have accepted her. Angus is very very good. They haven't got to
the stage of playing with each other but their friendly. There
all fine till it's time for PLAYING!!!

Everynight I get the good old Kitty Tease which I just got
and everytime 3-way attempts to play with it Malcolm goes into a
fit... She instantly goes after 3-way hissing and hitting her with
her paw until poor 3-way retreats and lays down and just watches
the fun activities going on. Last night after Malcolm had her fit
I put the Kitty Tease away..... Angus though is being punished
from playing for doing nothing because she'd be more then
happy to let 3-way play it seems.....

I'm starting to feel very badly for 3-way and would like to
find some way to correct Malcolm because I really don't think she
    will on her own............

I LOVE IT!!! I'll have to try that approach and
    see what happens......
                                      Thanks....

Already tried putting Malcolm in the other room.... I never
knew what a loud mouth she is!!!! Playtime is usually in the
evening and I don't want any knocks on my door. (The next door
neighbor is a real you know what!!!!!!)

    re. hissing back

This has worked for me on more occasions than I can count...BUT,
I found out that there's hissing and there's HISSING, to my detriment.

[I just know this will sound weird, but...] sometimes the kitties
sound quite hysterical hissing, some diffent tonal quality. Don't
hiss at them under these circumstances. I did twice. The first
time I got three stitches in the palm of my left hand; the second,
my reaction time was _much_ better.

820.6Ignore them --WELKIN::STRONACHThu Oct 15 1987 10:4414
When we first got our kitten and brought her home to Midnight (10 years old),
they hissed at first but because they were not actually battling, I ignored
them and eventually, the Old Buck (said affectionately) decided she was
alright and decided to let her suckle him!! I've heard this is not
uncommon for siamese cats (she only part) to want to continue suckling long
after they've been weaned. This sure was funny though.

So, I guess what I would say -- is let them hiss and unless actually
fighting is going on -- ignore it.

820.7zap the cat with squirt gunTHE780::WILDEDIGITAL: Day care for the wierdMon Dec 14 1987 16:274
Cat hisses, spay with squirt gun and proceed to play...repeat as required
to modify behavior. This way, only hisser gets "punished" and gets
instant feed-back on what behavior is generating the unwanted shower...
