I think there is a power struggle going on between my two cats at
home. Sawdust is a 4 year old female and Patchwork is a 3 year old
female. Both cats have been spayed. Both cats were adopted as kittens,
so they've been together for 3 years. Sawdust, being the older cat,
has always been the dominant cat in the house. She also has a bolder
personality than poor little shy Pathcwork.
This started Saturday night. Patchwork keeps hissing and growling
and running away from Sawdust. If Sawdust enters the room where Patchwork
is, Patchwork makes horrible noises then eventually runs to another
room. Then Sawdust follows (being either curious or spiteful?), and
the whole thing repeats.
Why would two cats that used to get along suddenly act like strangers?
I know that cats will instinctively stay away from other cats that are
sick, but neither cat looks sick.
Help! Is one of my cats sick (which one?), or is there just a power
struggle going on at home?

You mentioned both of your cats being spayed ... but sometimes a
strange kind of memory of the time before that comes up. I noticed
that myself on one or other occasion and I know it from my friend
cat-lovers that this sometimes happens.
It might be that one of them is pseudo- "in heat". I've noticed
spayed females reacting rather agressive to non-spayed "in-heats",
however these were good friends when everything was normal.
Then ofcourse, you should notice "in-heat" behaviour from one of
your cats ( like being very cuddly or so...)
There are a lot of things going on between cats that we humans don't
understand......All disclaimers apply ofcourse!

Eliot & Petunia, 2 male litter mates (yes, Tunny is a male, we made
a mistake when we named him) still fight constantly after 6 years
over who runs the house. The battles come and go but are usually
particularly common during the winter.
I am convinced that the cats alone will decide who will run a
particular house and there is nothing a human can do to effect the
decision. As long as they do not hurt each other (ours have NEVER
hurt each other no matter how loud the 'howling' is), I wouldn't
worry about it.

They seem to have gotten over it. Things are about 90% back
to normal. There is still some occasional hissing, but it's not
as bad as it was. I guess they're working things out. Thanks
for the replies.
