740.0. "SPCA VOLUNTEERS" by MARRHQ::KORCHNAK () Wed Sep 02 1987 23:33

    Tonight was my first night as an SPCA volunteer. I was helping the
    adoption follow-up, and let me tell you a few 'interesting' things
    I've discovered about the so-called 'compassion' of people who adopt.

    When I first got there, a woman was bringing back a dog. I'm not
    a real dog enthusiast, but the reason she was bringing it back was
    RIDICULOUS! First off, it was barely a year old, and they had this
    dog 2 weeks. They said it wasn't pleasing THEM! It cried all the
    time, tried to get out, and even went as far as humping their legs!
    This was their reason for returning it.

    Of the first calls I made, I called the people who had adopted a
    kitten about a month ago. They had never returned the vet follow-up
    card. When I called they said that the kitten was too young to get
    the FeLV shots (it was 16 wks old) and that when it was older they
    would take it to the vets. I made this person realize that they
    had signed a contract that they were to take the cat within 72 hours
    to a vet for a thorough checkup! And that FeLV just 'doesn't happen'.
    He was extremely non-concerned with this. Did I come back with a
    warm and fuzzy feeling about that conversation ? No way!

    Tomorrow night will be my first experience with being an adoption
    counselor. Now THAT will probably be even MORE interesting!

    Tonight made me appreciate my cats a THOUSAND times more! Cause
    I know I give them the care they deserve, not to abandon them!

    How do you become an SPCA volunteer? There's no phone number for
    them in Worcester, but I find it hard to believe that they've neglected
    a city of that size. Is there a national chapter I could call to
    find out?

740.2Lookup under "M" ?TLE::SAVAGENeil, @Spit BrookThu Sep 03 1987 17:372
    Years ago the equivalent organization used to be MASSACHUSETTS Society
    for the Prevention of Cruety to Animals.
740.3Checking...MARRHQ::KORCHNAKThu Sep 03 1987 17:382
    I'm going ask the shelter director if there such a number. As soon
    as I find out, I'll let you know.
740.4Never thought of 'M', but...AKA::TAUBENFELDAlmighty SETFri Sep 04 1987 10:013
    Nope, in the Worcester phone book I have here there is a MSPCC
    (children) but nothing for the MSPCA.

740.5Long distance call to BostonTLE::SAVAGENeil, @Spit BrookFri Sep 04 1987 10:384
    MSPCA headquarters in Boston has a number to call for information
    on "Volunteer Opportunities." The number is: (617) 522-7400 [it
    is also their main number]. I'll bet they can put you in touch with
    their counterpart in the Worcester area.

    I called the number and there is no SPCA in Worcester! Can you believe
    it? There is an Animal Rescue League, but they are not affiliated
    with the SPCA. Has anyone ever volunteered for the ARL?

740.72nd Night as a VolunteerMARRHQ::KORCHNAKTue Sep 08 1987 16:2331
    I'm going to ask the director of the area SPCA if there is any place
    in your area to volunteer as soon as she returns from vacation.

    I also want to tell you how my first night of volunteer adoption
    counseling went!

    Since I'm new there, I got to have a few dogs walk me, and assist
    a few people in selection of animals. The first woman and her 2
    girls I assisted wanted kittens. This one section had 25 kittens
    - 5 in each cage! And they wanted to see 1 particular kitten - the
    shyest one in each litter! That proved to be VERY exciting! Ever
    try to open a cage to get ONE kitten out without ALL of them darting
    for the door! I completely lost it, and all 5 kittens were bouncing
    as fast as they could out the cage! The woman and her 2 girls helped
    to capture the 4 other ones, while I held the 1 they wanted to see!
    And of COURSE THIS wasn't the one they wanted! They wanted to see
    another one in ANOTHER cage! Needless to say, Scene 2, part 1 was
    acted! And this cage was hysterical! There was this little grey
    kitten - about 7 wks old, that would crawl up the bars like a spider!
    He and another tiger striped one would jump about half a foot and
    just hang there! They were SO cute! Especially when you open the
    cage!

    I went and looked at all the other cats there. It was really sad.
    They were pretty depressed, and would probably make GREAT pets,
    given they were away from their current environment. They all had
    good dispositions -- ALL 18 of them!

    I already can tell this is going to be an interesting learning
    experience!
740.8ARL and MSPCA cooperate, they don't competeTOKLAS::FELDMANPDS, our next successFri Sep 11 1987 19:0714
    Re: .6

    A few weeks ago I caught the last few minutes of a radio talk show
    with a representative from the Animal Rescue League. Apparently,
    the two organizations try not to get in each other's way when it
    comes to servicing an area, so that they can maximize total coverage
    throughout the state. So it's not surprising that there's no MSPCA
    given that there is an ARL. I imagine that the MSPCA will still
    do things that the ARL isn't big enough to handle (litigating animal
    cruelty cases, perhaps?). I don't know anything about volunteering
    for the ARL, but I imagine their primary goals and ideals are similar
    to the MSPCA's.
