720.1 | Bonus snow shoes? | EMIRFI::KEENER | | Tue Aug 25 1987 08:38 | 18 |
| Wow! Be glad kitties don't need shoes, you'd be in serious trouble!
(Sorry 'bout that - just couldn't resist)
While I've never had the honor of being owned by a Maine Coon -
can barely afford the collection of rescued from an untimely death
and strays. I did have a LARGE double-pawed type cat that was
abondened by a military family move in with me. I had never seen
paws like that until we came to New England. Pete had three double
paws and one regular one. I asked our vet about it and he said
it was indeed very rare. Normally the 'double-pawed' types have
either all four or just the front two with extra toes and he had
never seen a cat where at least the front paws matched and the back
paws matched. I always considered it a bonus - if, for any reason
I ever had to prove identity of my cat, he was unique.

720.2 | polydactylism | USHS01::MCALLISTER | It's okay to say the U___ word! | Tue Aug 25 1987 10:20 | 9 |
| polydactyl "maine coons" (those that are not purebred) are relatively
common, especially in the northeast.
polydactyl purebred maine coons are relatively rare. It has been
bred out of them, as a polydactyl cannot be registered. There is
a movement by someone (Beth Hicks, maybe) to get polydactyl cats
accepted for championship status. In my personal opinion, not likely.

Argus J. Pussycat, Esq. also has huge double paws. He isn't a Maine
Coon, but the size of his paws are remarkable. One paw can almost
cover the entire palm of my hand.

| They say for some reason, that cats with extra toes are more
common in the northeast.
My Chief has 7 on each front paw, and 5 on each back one for
a total of 24!

When I got Mielikki I did the 'this little piggy went to market'
routine on her back paws and was very distressed when I ran out
of toes to wiggle. When I get my next kitten, I'll have to shop
around for one like yours.
