682.0. "First meeting for proposed cat club?" by VAXWRK::LEVINE () Fri Jul 24 1987 15:25

Note 652 discusses the possibility of forming a DEC Cat Club and various
things that club could do. I'm starting this as a separate note to discuss
the logistics of us having a meeting (versus what activities the club could
do which should go as replies to 652).

I've already offered my house (which is in Waltham, Mass) for the meeting -
is that location OK? Dave McAllister will be here the week of 3 August, which
is a convenient time for me as well. Are there nights that week people can
or can't attend?

Please respond to this note if you want to attend and which night is most
convenient for you.

As I now belong to the numbers of people that get sent to the New
England area for school; sure would be nice to meet some of the
people that frequent this notes file. I've had the pleasure of
meeting some of the equipment (had to to a "site survey" for a class
in one of the labs). I would love to belong to the club, but I
live in Texas. Guess attending meetings is not a possibility at
present, however I would love to be able to attend if there happens
to be one while I'm up there. Keep us out-of-towners informed of
    dates!

work for me would be Wednesday, the 5th. All other evenings are

I don't know when I'll be available (sometimes have kitten chores).
When the time and night have been decided I'll let the host/hostess
    know if I can attend.

Fine. Let's do it Thursday, the 6th after work. Should we have
a pot luck dinner, or feed ourselves and come afterwards? Either
way is fine by me.

Please send me mail or respond here if you wish to attend so I
can send you directions. Being a paranoid ex-New Yorker, I don't
feel great about publishing directions to my house in such a public
forum.

Since the response to my suggestion of a pot luck supper has been
very underwhelming (ie non-existent) I withdraw the suggestion.
The meeting will be at my house at 8. Starting at 6, a group of
us will be barbequing on my back deck. Anyone wishing to join us
	should let me know.

Some have left for new homes, and although I knew all along that

Below are the minutes of the meeting. If I've forgotten, misrepresented,
or just screwed something up in general, I invite the other four attendees
to correct me. I've taken the liberty of a little editorial comment here
and there. (-;

Minutes of: Meeting to Discuss the Formation of a Digital Cat Club

      Held: August 6, 1987

   Present: Donna Dudley
             Carol Fretts
             Pam Levine
             Dave McCallister
             Deb Skaltsis

========================================================================

Well, as you all can see from the attendance list the proposed cat club got
off to something less than a bang. Hopefully this is not an indication of
true interest level. We theorized that the general summer unavailability
of people and the location or time contributed to the low turnout. It was
thought that meetings held directly after work in one of DEC's cafeterias
might be more convenient for people. Look for the next meeting to be held
this way.

Undaunted, we proceeded to decide all the rules and regulations ... (heh, heh)
no, I'm just kidding, we didn't do this, honest. What we really did was to
throw some ideas out on the table about what we want the club to be and do.
Actually, I'm one step ahead of myself, so let me go back here for a moment.
Pam had called personnel to inquire about Digital clubs. She was told that
there are two types of clubs. One where you don't get money and non-Digital
people can be members; the other type of club receives money but the members
are Digital only. This type of club must have a charter and business plan
which is then approved by employee activities. Pam was to have received some
literature describing all this in the mail, but to date she has not got it yet.
(I won't make any sarcastic comments about personnel here, thank you.)
Hopefully at the next meeting we'll have that information and a vote can be
taken on just which kind of club we want to be.

Now onto the ideas. Many ideas, maybe too many. The ideas presented were
general in nature. What I mean is the specifics and logistics for accom-
plishing any given idea were not relevant for this point in time and to
this meeting. The ideas follow:

> Elderly assistance - adoptions; transportation to/from vets; cat sitting
   during hospital stays

> Children - some sort of education effort via local school or library

> Grief Counseling

> Socials

> Fund Raising Events/Ideas - cat of the quarter; contest for club name,
club mascot, funniest story, etc.; selling t-shirts; cat show

> Affiliation - this issue will require further discussion and debate at a
future point in time, establishment of the club needs to happen first

> Calendar

> Food Purchase Program - possibly affiliate with the DEC Kennel Club's
program (no hissing from the audience please)

> Coupon Blitz

> Sponsorship

> Subsidizing Neuter/Spay

> Newsletter - advertising, veterinarian recommendations, q&a, regional
   editor/coordinator

Ideas for the club are limited only by the number of people present to generate
them. I think the above reflect some ambitious goals and we hope that members
of the FELINE community find something that interests them enough to want to be-
come members of the club, even if it's just in-name only. We hope that there
will be several grass-roots efforts spurred on and supported by the Digital cat
club.

This brings me to the last item, membership. How to recruit memberships? Dave
McCallister volunteered to compile a 'recruit' list based on entries in FELINE.
He intends to put together a letter that discusses the purpose of the club and
some of the things that we hope to do. We five feel that there should be some
sort of membership dues. Not a lot of money, token dues if you will. Look for
this in your VAXMAILbox soon (right Dave?).
