655.0. "SLEEPING CATS" by VIDEO::USHER () Thu Jul 09 1987 10:58

    Im wondering if other cats are experiencing cat lethargy. It seems as
    though ever since it has been hot/humid, my cat has done nothing
    but sleep. He is either in the bathroom on the tile floor or on
    my coffee table (I guess that feels cool too). The only time he
    does anything is when he eats or if I play with him - then he comes
    alive. Other than that it seems from 8:00pm on he goes to windows
    or moves around until I go to bed and its back to the coffee table.
    I began to worry that he might be sick but when he is up or playing
    he's filled with energy. Its like unless hes occupied he would
    just rather sleep. Also, Do cats get bored/depressed and just sleep???

    It's my wife's thought that Karamaneh, our Siamese sleeps during
    the long, hot summer days so that she can _bug_ us at night.

    It's okay; she loves Kasramaneh deeply.

    Basil has thus far spent the summer on his back on my bedroom
    windowsill, feet in the air. Looks dumb, but if it makes him happy...

	Sammy was like that when he was an only cat - I got him
	a kitten of his own and I don't think either of them
	ever sleep now!

655.4They're basically lazy..VICKI::BULLOCKLiving the good lifeFri Jul 10 1987 10:5117
    I used to feel bad that I left my cat alone all day, and wondered
    if she got lonely. I have spoken to at least 4 vets about this,
    and, to a man, they all snorted and said, "Cats as a rule sleep
    85% (count 'em, 85%) of their lives away!" They seem to "come alive"
    when we come home because they've been snoozing all day. Mine is
    especially lazy on these hot, sticky days; they conserve their
    energy that way, and stay cool.

    Keep changing their water on hot days so that it's always fresh
    and cold (I sometimes leave an ice cube in there when I know it
    will be especially hot). Change the litter more frequently than
    usual, and brush your cat at least once a day to get the loose fur
    up. That alone will help the cat feel cooler.

    Sorry to run on--I've just been thru this before!

    As a quote from a cat book said:

    "Kittens open their eyes around 3 weeks of age, look around for
    a day or two, then close them for the remainder of their lives"

655.6"My Kitty"VIDEO::BISHOPTue Jul 14 1987 14:3816
  My "Kitty", like yours, spends most or her time in any window she
    can find open, usually the kitchen or bedroom. When not in the
    window she stays on the cool surfaces like the kitchen floor or
    the top of the refrigerator. When she sees you coming she immediately
    rolls on her back so you can rub her tummy. I've never seen a cat
    that likes her tummy rubbed like "Kitty" does.

    Cats are just plain lazy all the time, but I definately see a
    difference in the heat. She is very lazy and purrs at the sight
    of someone walking towards her. She only plays at night when it
    is somewhat cooler.

    She is a "Joy".

Yes our cats do sleep more in the summer...

    Instead of the normal 16 hours, they try and get in about 18 hours
    per day (and nite). The rest of the time is taken up by eating and
    trying to get us to feed them...

    But I love 'em.
