650.0. "Pricing policies of Summit Pets" by MIGHTY::WILLIAMS (Bryan Williams) Mon Jul 06 1987 20:26

I have a concern with Summit Pets. They were at the show in Boston
July 4-5. The owner himself was there (Marvin), and not his son.
I went to high school with his son, and his son is a fairly good
    businessman.

Anyway, I knew they had good prices, and my wife and I made out
a list before we went of what we wanted. We got a little shock.

One particular item we wanted, the Cat Home Veterinary Handbook,
is listed in the catalog for $12.95, including shipping. At the
show, he wanted $17.95. I asked why, and got a long explaination
of the cost of the truck, hotels, and the cost of the booth ($400).He
told me "since my costs are so high, I have to take it out on my
customers."! Can you believe a statement like that?

Anyway, I checked a few other things we wanted, catalog vs. asking.
    Most were higher.

Does that make sense? I realize that you need to make a profit if
you're in business, but the difference was not negligible. And I
certainly was alienated by his attitude. To me, I would include
the Cost of Doing Business in my prices, and not give away catalogs
in one hand and ask for more with the other.

    Am I completely off base?

    Bryan

P.S. Someone from DEC stoped by our cage to say Hi, but I wasn't
    there. Sorry!

gee, and one of the reasons that I go to shows is that I find the
cat stuff *cheaper* then the catalog prices (or the pet store prices
    for that matter).

In some ways you have to see his point. If you order from the catalog,
(which you can still do!) he doesn't have any of the overhead of
the actual booth at the show, therefore he can sell his product
    for less.

I think most vendors that set up at booths are there for breeders,
yes, but they probably make their most money from the spectator
who nearly always buys something before they leave. The breeders
shop from vendor to vendor and catalog to catalog for the best prices
and that's who they buy from.

I think if you watch the vendors very carefully you will also find
that they change their prices from show to show, depending on the
location. I know summit does this, and I know many of the others
do too...depends on what they have to pay for the booth space, etc.

Anybody every go to the Empire show??? Try pricing things there!!

    I guess that's free enterprise...:-)

Frankly I agree - I found his prices higher at this show than at
    others - I also had a shopping list and recieved $$$shock. I
will say that the cost of exhibiting at this show was really
something (hotel, entries, etc) - in the area of $350.00 all
together (approx.) - so he must have a similar problem. In
any case, I was disapointed also.
