635.0. "Cat likes/dislikes" by VICKI::BULLOCK (Living the good life) Wed Jun 24 1987 14:02

I've loved cats for years, and the thing that intrigues me is the
things that different cats appear to love and hate. For example,
my Billie loves to be held like a baby on her back, but is NOT a
lapcat. When I was at a fellow cat-owner's house and picked up
their cat that way, I was told, "Uh-oh! Don't hold Smokey that
    way--he really hates it!"

So what I'd like to hear are the things your cats really like, and
really don't like. Like people, cats are all different.

Billie loves to be scratched between her shoulders, and under the
chin. She also likes to have her ears "peeled" back so her eyes
bug out (yes, really). She likes me to put her catnip mouse on
the footstool so she can knock it down, and she chases golf balls
down the hallway. She comes running when she hears me use the chopping
board; even if I'm cutting up broccoli, she wants to see it (I
guess so I don't sneak some ham up there).

She does NOT like her back feet touched--period. She also dislikes
me brushing her belly-fur. She's not wild about the fan; she gives
it a wide berth when it's on. She hates it when I put on
nailpolish--she squinches up her eyes and backs off when she smells
it. She does not like other cats in "her" yard, and will growl
and pace up and down until they leave.

She's a wacko cat, but I love her?

    How about yours??

    Have fun,

    Jane

    Merlin, who's a jet-black half-Siamese=half-Manx and a stub, likes
    1) to have his stubtail squeezed _gently_, 2) to hide, 3) to play
with water, and 4) to suck my chim [my wife thinks this last is
very funny, until the few rare times when he does it to _her_].
He's also very good at opening things.

635.2Between Two CatsRATTLE::LANDRYWed Jun 24 1987 14:5721
I have two cats, its-a-wits and spunky. They are like night and
day. Its-a-wits (nickname) loves to sit on my chest and purr in
my ear. But only when she wants to. She also likes to eat her
"treat" up on the washing machine - away from spunky. She does
not like to be brushed, and when she knows I am going down the cellar
is right there behind me (she comes up with cobwebs on her).

Spunky does not like to be picked up. She loves to be scratched
and brushed, so long as you do it s-l-o-w-l-y. She is 1 year old,
but still has the playful kitten in her (that's why its-a-wits can't
handle her alot of the times). She will eat anything - do long
as it doesn't bite back - whereas its-a-wits only likes her tuna
    or turkey for treats.

Funny how much personality cats can have. I was just thinking last
night how lucky I am to have these two beautiful babies.

    Cheers to its-a-wits and spunky!!

635.3Amelia and Bailey-likes/dislikesSCRUZ::CORDES_JAWed Jun 24 1987 22:2521
Bailey doesn't like to be held unless its her idea. She loves to
wake mom up at 6:00am by kneading and licking her arm into oblivion.
She loves to play with water dripping from a faucet (and the top of
her head is usually damp). She loves her "bonkers" treats. She
loves to have the top of her head scratched and to have her ears
warmed up. She loves paw/toe massages. She hates to be brushed.
She loves to chew holes in my sweaters and t-shirts and to shred
paper to bits. She loves to play with her nerf golf balls and to
fetch them for mom to throw again and again.

Amelia loves her mom so much that she has to be touching her when
sitting or laying down near her and follows her all over the house.
She loves to watch mom putting on makeup and doing her hair but
hates the smell of toothpaste. She loves catnip pillows and she
loves to see how high she can jump (I think she's trying to see
if she can touch the top of the sliding glass door). She loves to
be scratched on the back of the neck and hates to have her ears
cleaned. There are lots of things Amelia loves and very few things
that he hates. Amelia just loves to be loved.

Aja likes nothing and nobody. She hates her food, dogs, other cats,
people. She hisses, spits and SCREAMS when anybody comes to the
house. She has the personality of noxious gas...

Honey loves to be picked up and cuddled like a baby. Chauncey hates
to be picked up. Chauncey loves to make bread on my arm and drool
all over. Honey thinks that's disgusting. Honey loves to wash
Chauncey's face and ears. Chauncey loves it!! Honey loves Pounces.
Chauncey hates them. Chauncey loves Femalt. Honey won't touch
the stuff. Honey loves to sit by an open window catching a cool
breeze; so does Chauncey. And I love them both!!

Yeah, I've told the vet about her disposition, but he seemed unfazed.
(No physical reason for her attitude.)

She's been like this since day one. In fact, she's the only cat
I've ever seen who was down-right *aggressive* in her bitchiness.

She ran down the (forbidden) cellar steps one day and when I went
down to retrieve her, she let out a BLOOD-CURDLING scream and lunged
at me. Quite taken back, I RAN up the steps and left her down there.
    (Picture a white 4 lb. fuzzball chasing a 200lb. man who's running
    for his life...)

I would be, too, if I didn't have to live with her. :-)

Seeriously, it _might_ be, and this is what I meant about talking
things over with your vet, that whether the _cause_ is physical
or not, a therapy, such as prolactin, might mel;low her out. Obviously
you like her, but wouldn't it be nice if she reciprocated?

    Que pasa Prolactin?

I must admit, there is one thing she LOVES. I have lots of catnip
growing in the house. She never touches the plants but can't wait
for me to break out her little baggie full of herb...

635.15JUST A THOUGHTDONJON::SCHREINERGo ahead, make me PURRR...Tue Jun 30 1987 09:5711
Do you give her catnip often??? I took care of a cat (for about
a year) that was allergic to catnip. He was a blue-eyed white turkish
angora. He was the sweetest cat normally.....give him catnip and
he'ld be so agressive and nasty that you couldn't get near him.
The reaction usually lasted a day or so.

If you give her catnip everyday, you might want to try stopping
it for a week or so to see if there is any change in behavior.

Prolactin is the hormone that promotes lactation in mammals. It's
a hormone that's siometimes called the "mother love" hormone.
In extreme cases, it sometimes can be used to mellow out a mean
kitty. You might want top talk it over with your vet.

635.17Snuggles Likes/DislikesMED::NEWTONWhat's snew?Thu Jul 02 1987 15:3229
Snuggles loves to sit at an open window especially now that he's
discovered bugs like to fly around them. He's under my feet from
the time I get up till I feed him and again from the time I get
home till I feed him. Sometimes he's in the mood to snuggle up
next to me while I watch T.V.. He LOVES water. When ever I use
the sink he's right there to watch. Whenever we take a shower he
has to come in and watch. One day he slipped and almost took a
shower with me. As soon as we're done in the shower he gets right
in there to walk around and get his feet wet. We have an oval shaped
bathroom sink which he loves to curl up in. Snuggles loves his
back, and side of his face rubbed. When I give him a vigorous rubbing
all over his back he comes right back and wants me to do it again.

Snuggles doesn't like coffee ice cream, 9-lives, purina, his legs
touched, and being spanked or yelled at (he'll go off and cry as
    loud as he can).

Re: Edd - My parents cat is a real B*tch too. I must say though,
compared to your cat, my parent's cat sounds like a sweet heart.
Did you know there is such a thing as animal psychiatrists. My
parents cat got very upset one time when my parents had a lot of
company over the holidays. The cat (Muffin) got very sick but
when they brought her to the vets the vet said there was nothing
wrong that it was probably pschological and he recommended an animal
psychiatrist. The only reason my parents didn't take her was because
the nearest one was in Dennis, MA.

I have two kittens, Pokey and Gumby. They are both sisters and
about 11 weeks old. They're ADORABLE! Gumby loves to sit on my
sholders and rub her head in my ear or chew on my hair. She loves
to nuzzle up against me or her daddy. I think she is jealous of
her sister because when I am petty Pokey, Gumby will jump on me
    and demand attention.

They love to book around the house and tear up the toilet paper,
wrestle, eat, and they LOVE to be petted or sleep with mommy or
    daddy.

Pokey likes to swim. Ever see a wet cat? It's funny. She likes
to stand on the edge of the bath tub while we're filling it up.
As soon as we shut off the water, she jumps in, paws outstretched,
and does the dogpaddle around the tub!

    These kittens are great!

My long lost cat, Kitty, who has been missing almost two months
now, and whom I still hope will come home, used to love to jump
up the walls. She would go booking across the room, jump up the
corner of the doorframe, and try to climb to the top. She made
it a few times. Kitty come home!

635.19Kittens and blowdryers dont mixFRYAR::MOREAUMon Jul 06 1987 17:0815
My kitten is still growing so her likes and dislikes aren't always
the same all the time. I dont think swearing is allowed here so
I can't tell you what my roommate named her - anyway, she loves
for me to give her shoulder rubs (weird) and she loves to sleep
on my neck at night. When I get home at night, the place is a mess
because she gets so bored being inside all day. She literally climbs
the walls (actually, the screens) from boredom. She hates to have
the blowdryer in her face or the spray from the iron sprayed on
her (I'm so mean) but I get a kick out of it. I'm really not mean
to her, I love cats and kittens and would have a houseful if I could.
Besides, when I slap her for doing something wrong, she thinks I'm
playing and always comes back for more. (I dont keep slapping her
though) She spoiled, like every cat should be!!

635.20Jasper likes to snuggleFSPROD::CGILMOREThu Jul 23 1987 16:3123
Jasper loves to snuggle with me as soon as I get home. Her favorite
spot is laying right across my neck (i'll be laying on my back).
She loves to nibble on my ears and my chin. And she absolutely
LOVEs to lick me ! she'll lick my arm until it hurts ! (anybody
    know why she does this?)

She also loves to play - with anything and everything ! She
especially likes to jump from her gym to my bed, down to the
floor and back again. Must be some sort of kitty game. And she
    LOVES to wrestle with mommie.

.. she hates it when i leave and don't take her with
me. She also hates it when I want to sleep late
on Saturday and Sunday and won't get up and feed her at her
'usual' time... She also hates it when the big guys come in
and try to steal her food (but she lets them know who's boss!).
And she doesn't like it when mommie washes her neck with a
face cloth since she keeps missing it, although she's getting
used to it, and getting better at doing it herself.

635.21... Yoni and Purdy ...IPG::KCAMPBELLTue Jul 28 1987 09:3620
Yoni likes to be tickled under the chin and purrs like a motor boat
when you do this to her. She also likes to make herself little
beds amongst the foliage in the garden and will only sleep in her
    own little box.

Purdy is a terror who likes to curl up in a ball in the car. I'm
sure she'd live in there if she was allowed to as she gets into
a mood when she's removed from it! She goes all "gooey" when she
plays with her catnip mouse and dribbles if you play with her and
the mouse on your knee. Other times she brings the mouse for a
game and often catches it in mid-air.

Yoni and Purdy do not speak to each other but what they do both
like to do is sneak into the bedroom (where they aren't allowed)
and go to sleep on the bed. They've even been known to sleep very
near to each other her despite their differences! And another thing
    they like is salmon.
