585.1 | Couple of ideas | MIGHTY::WILLIAMS | Bryan Williams | Tue May 12 1987 12:34 | 12 |
| Cin,
I have seen public domain software for 4 generation human geneology.
I am sure if the source is available that it would be simple to
modify for 5 generations and simple word changes for Sire and Dam.
I'll look around, can't promise any results, but I can look..
If nothing else, we have an up-and-coming software type in our group
(we are a hardware support group) who is looking for interesting
ideas to experiment with. Do you mind it being on a VAX?

585.2 | Computerized litters. What next??? | GLINKA::GREENE | | Tue May 12 1987 13:24 | 11 |
| What a neat idea...just in time, too! (I had already started thinking
about the task of the pedigrees for 2 litters.)
Bryan, I guess if it has to be on one of them thar DEC VAX things,
that would be A-OK.
Seriously, I *only* use a VAX with VMS, so if the experiment could
be tried, I'll be more than happy to try it out real fast on my
system.

585.3 | I'm willing to learn anything... | DONJON::SCHREINER | Go ahead, make me PURRR... | Tue May 12 1987 14:12 | 9 |
| Anything VAX/VMS would be great, or WPS+ or even DTR!!!
I can see I'm not the only one interested, so if anyone has anything
that might be used for this purpose, let me know where it is and
how to get it!!!
Thanks again...

585.4 | Still looking for help... | DONJON::SCHREINER | Go ahead, make me PURRR... | Thu Jun 18 1987 10:57 | 7 |
| I'm still looking for a "form" or program to assist in producing
5 generation pedigrees for my cats/kittens.
Doesn't anyone have anything?????

585.5 | How's about getting it written ?!?! | RDGE00::ALFORD | Dragon Riders do it in between .... | Thu Jun 18 1987 15:09 | 23 |
| Why don't you write out a User/functional Specification of what
you want this program to do ??
Then those of us programmers out here could have a play with it
and see what we can come up with !!
Give things like -
What information would you like to see on the screens.
What things you would like to access data on -
Cat's name, generation, colour (?),
temperament (?) etc
Any cross referencing
Anything else you can think of
Size of machine (storage capacity) it is to run on.
Also type of machine (VAX/PDP 11) would probably be
easiest.
This shouldn't be hard for you as you obviously know what you
want !!

585.6 | That would be terrific! | GLINKA::GREENE | | Thu Jun 18 1987 16:58 | 35 |
| Cindy knows moreabout writing pedigrees, but I am looking here
at Nutmeg and Tag's pedigree forms. They are 4 generations (with
Nut and Tag listed at the top, not in the geneology section).
For Sire and Dam, there are 6 lines each:
Name of sire [dam]
Registration number
Breed, color
Owner name
Owner street address
City, State, zip
For generations 2,3, and 4, there are only 3 lines per cat needed:
Name of sire [dam]
Color
Reg. number
(Guess they are trusting it *must* be the appropriate breed!)
At the top of the form, under Cat's name are two sections for the
humans: owner and breeder, each with street and city/state/zip.
No doubt there are lots of variations on this.
As for *computer* related issues:
PLEAS keep us VAX/VAX users in mind!
BTW, there IS a company that I just noticed advertised a program
(probably for a PC???) in the latest issue of Cats or Cat Fancy.
If anyone wants to inquire, I'll look up the name, address, phone,
and post it. I don't happen to have a PC.

| Also, it should bear in mind that this stuff needs to be output
in a graphic format. a plotter would be nice, but LN01/LN03 would
do nicely. Maybe in Latex?
I'll be seeing my Brother-in-Law this weekend (who's in computers
and big in Genelogy (sp?)). I'll see what he knows.

| There is a pedigree program available (advertised in most of
the cat magazines) that was written by Larry Ritter who is
a certifed CFA clerk. It's just available for IBM compatabile
PC's. I've seen it and was impressed. It is also capable of
a very large database. The cost is reasonable, last I checked
it was $99 (no sources). The major cost is the PC and printer.
My husband is in the process of writing a program for me. I
also got very tired of typing up pedigrees but also wanted to
track other information such as sex and colors of kittens in a
litter, shot records, and any other problems or information that
would be useful in my breeding program. So I presented my
husband with the idea of setting up software to do that for me.
It will be only used on an Atari ST (he used to work for Atari
before he moved on to DEC) since that is what we had at home.
It's being written in Pascal but doubt that it would run on a
Vax without major modifications. It's about 2/3 done now. If
anyone else is interested let me know.

585.9 | May Work On VAX | SCOTIA::TBOWEN | | Fri Jun 19 1987 09:03 | 7 |
| I'm no programmer but in attempting to learn Pascal I've written
and debugged some VERY SMALL programs at work, Kermit'ed the
source to my ST at home, recompiled and found them to run fine.
Of course there can be no GEM access as this is an extension to
the ISO standard for the ST. Both VAX Pascal and Personal Pascal
adhere to this standard, I think. Of course, I'm assuming what he
is using OSS Personal Pascal.

| I was initially thinking of just a way to get the cats pedigrees
automated so I wouldn't have to type them over and over. But I
love the idea of a database.

| Well I'll let you all know when it's finished. He's really
a talented programmer (I can just prefer not). Last I asked
he was in some kind of endless loop. Not having RMS is a
big disadvantage. Anyway he's plugging away.

| You might want to check out the geneology notes file. Someone there
had a program for tracing family trees (people). It runs on a VAX
and might be easily adaptable for kitties.
