574.0. "pregnancy indications?" by GEMVAX::GRANT () Fri May 01 1987 16:20

A quick question -- and please forgive my ignorance on this subject:

How do you tell if a cat is pregnant, short of going to the vet?
The reason I ask is that Adrienne went into heat _before_ Sly was
neutered, but I didn't worry much about the goings-on between them
because (ignorance again!) I thought that Sly was too young to
accomplish much of anything. Since then, I have found out that Sly
was _not_ too young, and I've noticed that Adrienne's teats are
    swollen and pink.

The book I have says that this is an indication of pregnancy. Is
it always? If so, I will get her to the vet immediately, since she
is awfully young to have kittens (she's 8 months old), and I would
want to do everything I could to help ensure the health and well-being
    of mother and babies.

    Thanks,

    Marleen

My vote says Adrienne is in the family way for sure!

I guess there can be "false pregnancy" just like in humans,
with all the associated symptoms, but...from what I've heard
and what I've seen, the enlarged and pink nipples are just
    about the first clear sign.

Is she eating/wanting more food than before? Finicky Nutmeg,
who almost had to be spoon fed before getting pregnant, will
almost jump into her food dish before it is put down, and will
cry if the next portion is not on time!

Her shape didn't change til later, but now she looks a bit like
    a pyramid.

Probably wouldn't hurt to get Adrienne a check up and start feeding
her some kind of high nutrient diet (even kitten food is better
than regular if you've not got anything else around --check with
    the vet).

    Enjoy! ;-)

I am no expert but it sounds to me like she is pregnant. It appears
that Sly is aptly named. ;^)

Did you see any of the goings on between them? It would be helpful
if you did since you could figure out when the kittens might be
expected. Gestation averages out to about 65 days.

I agree with the rest....she sure sounds "prego" to me!!

For the record, Cats are like People...If they're interested and
can "do the dance", then.... tee hee...

Good Luck....8 months sounds a little young to be having kittens,
I'ld definitely get her to a vet to see if he/she feels she will
have any problems, just so you can be prepared.

574.4vet appointment MondayGEMVAX::GRANTFri May 01 1987 17:5119
Well, I just called the vet and made an appointment for Monday P.M.
to find out for sure. As she is young, I want to do all possible
to make sure that mother and babies are healthy.

She is not eating more -- she is actually eating less. If she is
pregnant, maybe she will end up having to be coaxed to eat (an unusual
    situation for her!)

She was in heat only the week before Sly was neutered, so that pins
    down the date of conception.

I'll let you know Tuesday A.M. if the vet says that she is . . .
I am kind of hoping that she is, my husband and I are already planning
on keeping one of the little ones!

    Thanks for the information,

as an aside... most vets aren't much better are calling pregnancies..

and the conception period is 61 to 69 days usually, guarenteed to
be on the worst possible time for you

574.6new family on the wayGEMVAX::GRANTTue May 05 1987 10:2423
Well, Adrienne is definately pregnant. The vet says that she and the
kittens (two, he says) are doing fine. He's put her on a high-protein
diet for the duration.

My husband, son, and I are all very excited. Even though we hadn't
planned on Sly and Adrienne having a family, we are glad that it
happened.

One thing, though: the vet thinks that Adrienne is much farther along
than my calculations show. He says that she is probably somewhere
around her 55th day! Now, my family and I agree that there were
definate goings-on between the two cats right around the beginning of
April. That only makes it 35 days. Could she already have been
pregnant during that time? I don't think that we misunderstood what
was happening during the beginning of April. Or could she just seem
further along, because she is so small?

Either way, we're looking forward to new kittens. If there are only
two, we will keep them both. If there are more, well, my
mother-in-law's cats are getting on in years, and she could probably
do with a little bit of youth in the house . . .

574.7new babies!GEMVAX::GRANTThu Jun 11 1987 18:0426
This morning (Thursday, June 11) at 5:00 A.M., Adrienne presented us
with 3 of the most beautiful kittens I have ever seen!

My husband and I woke to the sound of kittens mewing. We found them,
plus Mommy Adrienne, AND Daddy Sly, all cuddled up on the floor
against the base of bed, wrapped up in a part of the bedspread that
was hanging down on the floor. We immediately moved Mom and babies to
a box, putting the box on the same spot on the floor and then covering
the top with the bedspread.

All three kittens are grey tigers, just like Mom. Seems like no one is
going to take after Daddy Sly! Sly, by the way, is quite miffed. Even
though he presided at the birth, he later decided that he was really
jealous, and walked around hissing at everyone (even me!). Guess we'll
just have to pamper him for a while.

Now my big problem is trying to convince my husband to keep all three.
We had already planned on keeping two. As far as I can see, there's no
big difference between keeping two and keeping three. And how can we
give away just one, anyway? I mean, if she had four or five, that
would be different. But we can't give away just one, now, can we?

Wish me luck!

Marleen

You are absolutely right! It wouldn't be fair to keep two
and send one (and which one???) out into the cold cruel world!

[and so what if there had been 5? I've been assured that there
is indeed "always room for one more" -- so just make the decision
    one at a time ;-) ]

Congratulations to you and Adrienne and Sly! If your husband has
already agreed to keeping two kittens, I don't see why he couldn't
agree to three. Anyway, by the time they would be ready to leave,
he'll probably be too attached to all of them anyway!

    Good luck,
