Help!! Does anyone have a problem with "kitty conjunctivitis"?? My cat has it again (the third time in a few years), and I am treating it by gently swabbing her eyes with a warm wet washcloth, and then putting a dab of veterinary othalmic eye ointment in the corner of each eye. Hopefully this will do it, but I just hate to see her poor eyes this way--she squints like an old lady without her glasses! She doesn't seem to be in pain, tho; her appetite is good, and she plays a lot. Is there anything else that can be done, or am I just worrying too much? Overprotective "mum", Jane

When I picked Shanti up at the SPCA a month ago, she had a severe case of conjunctivitis. The vet at the emergency hosp. gave her an othalmic eye ointment, but my regular vet gave me some Tetramycilin ointment, which is a little stronger. He says that this ointment is good for cat "herpes" too. Her eyes don't 'tear' as much now (she's been on it for about a week - putting it in her eye twice a day). The vet did say that it could be a condition that she always has, but comes and goes. Other than what my vet has told me, that's all I know about it. I hate to see Shanti constantly rubbing her eyes! But they do seem to look ALOT better.

Thanks for the note on "K. C.". I guess it just takes vigilance and time. I know she hates me fooling with her eyes, but I tell her it's for her own good (I hated hearing that as a child!)! Hope that Shanti is better, Jane

Chauncey didn't invent "K.C."; he merely evalated it to an art form! In the 7 months I've had him, he's had bouts of conjuntivitis 4 times. What you're doing seems to be the right thing. If you get really worried, and want to see a specialist, I recommend Chauncey's eye doctor, Dr. Alan Bachrach, at Vet. Opthamology of New England (and his associate, who's name escapes me). They're located in Lincoln, MA, and are terrific. I don't know where we'd be with out them! Like you, I tend to worry too much and be overprotective of my boys, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Chauncey gets eye drops every day and he still loves me!! Good luck! Mary BTW--the number for VONE is (617) 259-0080

One of my boys suffers from allergic conjuntivitis. He is bothered by it mainly in the spring and summer when it is chronic. The fall isn't as bad and the winter doesn't bother him at all. Kitty Hayfever, thats a new twist. Jo Ann |
