519.0. "Where does your cat like to nap?" by SCOTCH::GLICK (Blessed by the Holy Puffins of Merrimack) Wed Mar 18 1987 15:11

O.k. It's time I face the truth. I have a cat that sleeps in another
dimension. I've got two (yes I'll introduce them! I promise). Conrad
sleeps in the normal places, patches of sunlight, freshly washed and dried
(and de haired) articles of clothing, the couch, etc.

L.E.O. (an acronym for a name that is too offensive to explain in notes)
on the other hand rarely sleeps in our presence. He disappears when he
goes to sleep. No, I haven't actually caught him at this. But it's true.
I think the path to the other dimension is under the covers of our bed
because it's not unusual to find him stretched out under the covers with
only his tail sticking out. But he's always awake when we lift the covers.
L.E.O. only sleeps in other dimensions.

Take today for instance. I go home for lunch. I let the cats out of the
basement (a heated walkout that they seem to prefer to the rest of the
house anyway). I eat. I read. I get ready to go. I tell the cats to go
to the basement. Conrad being the good cat he is, does just that. L.E.O.
is no where to be found. I do not live in a big house. I look everywhere.
In a progressively more detailed search I look EVERY#!$#!@$#!@where. I
could tear down and rebuild my house in the time I spent looking for L.E.O.
I shake the food (L.E.O. loves to eat). I turn on the stereo loudly
(L.E.O. definitely prefers the basement when the stereo's cranked). I
pretend to leave, (L.E.O. loves to watch me drive away). Still no cat.
They're both indoor cats, no cat doors, but L.E.O. is gone. Gone to
another dimension.

One last time I go to the basement. I shake the food. I actually feed
Conrad a bit for being such a helpful kitty in the search (this cat, though
a mutt definitely has Siamese lungs). Poof! L.E.O appears at the top of
the stairs. Squinty eyed. Yawning. Stretching. L.E.O. has returned.

You see, L.E.O. sleeps in another dimension

I thought Snuggles slept in another dimension for a while too.
Then I discovered his hiding place. There is a space between the
top of our kitchen cabinets and the ceiling. He likes to get up
there (amazingly without falling trying to climb over boxes and
    such) and sleep.

He also has his own chair (actually 2 chairs). We have a directors
chair that he absolutely loves (until he falls out the opening in
the back). The other is the loveseat. If he feels like stretching
out he lays there. If someone sits in his seat he'll bug them till
they either get up or they let him get up.

Sometimes, though not that often, he'll stretch out on the bathroom
floor. This is strange because the bathroom floor is tile and is
usually cold. I think he only does it when some one is in there.
I guess he just likes to stay close to us.

I would think he wouldl love the water bed but he I never find him
    sleeping there.

Well I think that about covers it. Anyone else have any strange
    places there cat sleeps?

519.2Plant a bag, grow a cat overnight !MARVIN::WARWICKVillage tours start hereThu Mar 19 1987 04:599

Paula has a small padded bag that she keeps her knitting in. The bag is
slightly smaller than a curled up cat. If this bag is ever left out of
the cupboard overnight, it is guaranteed that next morning, Lucy will
be sleeping perched on top of it. I've seen her like this with the bag
on the floor, on a heater, on the chair, and on a table. I have
no idea why she likes it so much though.

519.3The Peaceful CatORION::BURLEWThu Mar 19 1987 09:5717
Serena, who is 13 years old, has 4 favorite sleeping places:

    1. At night, she prefers to sleep curled up on the bed between
        Tom and I.

    2. Under the stove pipe that comes out the back of our wood stove.

    3. In the den closet curled around the chimney.

    4. In the northeast corner of the den behind the corner cupboard.

I did have a cat once (her name was Samantha) who liked to sleep
in the bathtub! She even liked to take baths, especially if there
    were bubbles.

I can understand what .0 goes thru. Patches takes off and hides
and there are times that I can not find her. The only way to get
her out from her hiding place is to tap on a can of cat food and
there she is out of no where. Her other napping places are
any place she can crawl under something an her favorite is crawling
under the blankets in my waterbed.

519.5Merlin's spots -- not even the Twilight ZoneINK::KALLISHallowe'en should be legal holidayThu Mar 19 1987 15:1721
Merlin loves to hide. He sleeps when he hides. In our house, he
found a spot in the cellar near the ceiling behind some shelving
that is almost inaccessable to humans, but _fine_ for him. It is
always in shadows, so since he's jet black ...

He also likes to sleep next_to/on me when I'm in bed. Flattering,
I suppose (my wife says it's "cute" unless he or Karamaneh try sleeping
on _her_), but the foot of the bed would be fine.

When visiting my mother in Florida, circumstances resulted in us
bringing our cats. Merlin discovered two _dandy_ spots: under a
bamboo chair in the reading room (unbeknownst to my mother until
she lifted the cushion to adjust it and found herself looking into
two shining eyes -- very startling when the tile is dark); and atop
her refrigerator. _I_ discovered that spot when he jumped from
there to the floor, whizzing about a foot from my face....

    Very inventive cat, Merlin ...

519.6In a drawerJAWS::COTEFight for your right to pate'..Thu Mar 19 1987 16:419
Aja has learned that if she opens the cupboard under my kitchen
sink, she can get into the drawers under the kitchen counters.
One drawer is full of paper bags. She spends hours in there!

I've got some curious looks from visitors who ask "Where's the
cat?" when I open up a kitchen drawer, show them the cat, and then
put her back in the drawer and shut it.

519.7Onyx and his chairGEMVAX::BUFFERThu Mar 19 1987 16:4721
Onyx (alias nix nix, the nix, monster kitty) likes to sleep on the
wicker chair in front of the radiator in the front room. He usually
sleeps there on the weekends during the day when the sun is shining
in or at night when we are watching TV or have company. If someone
dares sit in his chair and he sees them, he sits in front of the
person and stares real hard. He will then pretend to jump up but
ends up stretching and proceeds to dig his little claws into legs.
He did that one night to me while we were playing a pursuit game.
That night, I got up and started walking away and he jumped right
up and just sat there as if to say "you've got alot of nerve."
When he comes in from being out at night with his friends, he
immediately goes upstairs to sleep on the waterbed. He used to
try to get under the covers but I had to put a stop to that. He
gets a little possesive with his space. He used to sleep with
Crystal (our black dog) on the dogs blanket during the cold nights
but Crystal put an end to that. Onyx started trying to feed off
the dog. Too much! These two are a team, even though they are
    not both cats.

519.8<My cat, the plumber>MARRHQ::KORCHNAKFri Mar 20 1987 15:1813
We have a small bathroom downstairs where we keep the litterbox.
Our cat, Charlie, likes to open the door to the cabinet, and sleep
under the sink! When he wakes up, he does exciting things, like
taking the toilet paper and using it to sharpin his claws, or rolling
it throughout the house -- his form of 'interior decorating'.

Another of his favorite hangouts is the top of our staircase which
has a banister that you can lean over and look at the stairs below.
Charlie will jump up there -- and when he misses you hear a cat
going down stairs the easy way -- straight down! No injuries yet,
thank goodness, but I think he only has 6 of his 9 lives left!

Becky likes to nap:
    - under the covers (like a bed mole), especially when there's company.
    - on top of the cabinets over the refrigerator.
    - under my legs under the covers while I'm reading in bed.
    - under the headboard of my platform bed.
    - under the futon of my bed.
    - the corner of the bedroom closet
    - on my lap under the afghan I'm crocheting (or on top of the afghan -
this location is harder to deal with.)
    - in a sunbeam
    - on top of the TV
    - the top platform of their tree.
    - under throw pillows.
    - touching me.
    - under a pile of afghan and comforters.

Josh likes to nap:
    - in his carrier in the basement
    - on top of the linens on the top shelf of the linen closet (after
he's pushed half of them onto the floor, of course)
    - on top of the cabinets over the refrigerator
    - on top of the bookshelves
    - the shelf of the bedroom closet
    - under the bathroom sink (he only sleeps there because he's figured out
how to get in there by crawling through a drawer he's opened, but hasn't
figured out how to squeeze back out).
    - in the large kitchen drawer in his (my) old apartment.
    - on top of a pile of afghan and comforters that Becky is sleeping under.
      (the prince and the pea)
    - on top of a pile of afghan and comforters that Becky is not sleeping
      under.
    - inside boxes
    - any place he's not allowed to be.
    - on the next to top stair, where he can detect any movement in the
direction of the kitchen that might result in him getting a treat.
    - somewhere in the same room as me.

One of my three cats likes to sleep and hide under our console tv.
He even hides under it when it is going. We discovered this one
day when he had a bad cold and his sneezing gave him away. Another
time he hid out in a small kitchen closet behind a box of shoes
and boots because he knew I wanted to put him in the basement before
I left for the afternoon. He is sneaky, sneaky. He also sits up
on the TV to watch me drive off to work in the morning and he knows
he's not allowed there, ha, ha. I have knick knacks on the TV and
he is so dainty that he doesn't even move them. The only reason
I discovered this was a few times in the morning I forgot something
and had to come back. He looks soooo quilty when he gets caught.
They surely know right from wrong.
