394.0. "SAV-A-LIFE" by SAHQ::CARNELL () Tue Nov 18 1986 08:37
The following was in Sunday's Atlanta Journal and Constitution pet
section:
According to the Humane Society of the United States, more than
1 million wild and domestic animals are killed each year by vehicles
on American roads. Many people are injured, some of them fatally,
in these accidents, and property damage from them is estimated at
more than $36 million. In Minnesota alone, there are about 6,000
car-deer collisions each year.
The problem is addressed by SAV-A-LIFE Animal Warning Device.
Developed in Austria and tested in Europe for a number of years,
the relatively inexpensive (under $30) product consists of two 3-inch
long bullet-shape devices mounted by means of adhesive backing to
the front bumper or grille of a vehicle.
When the vehicle reaches a speed of 30 miles per hour, the flow
of air through the devices creates a sound of from 16,000 to 20,000
hertz. This frequency cannot be heard by human beings or animals
in the vehicle, but it warns off wild animals, some birds, pets
and domestic animals, except cattle or sheep, for up to 400 yards
away.
Users in the United States report an 80 percent success rate in
preventing animal-vehicle accidents.
For information write to Sav-a-Life, Inc., Box 1226, New York, NY
10025.

394.1 | Fascinating... | SQM::RAVAN | | Tue Nov 18 1986 09:17 | 11 |
| Sounds interesting; too bad we can't automatically attach them to
the cars driven by the local hooligans who love running down pets
in the road.
Question: if its range is really 400 yards, what does it do to animals
who aren't on the road? Would it cause momentary panic in all the
animals who live by roadsides? (I have this vision of somebody driving
past a barnyard and having clouds of panicked sheep or chickens
bolting away from the road in both directions...)

394.2 | Buck wants his Doe | TIGEMS::SCHELBERG | | Tue Nov 18 1986 15:51 | 15 |
| wow, sounds interesting...wish I had one when a deer hit my car....
and I mean HE hit ME....I stopped my car when I saw the female deer
in the road and then HE plowed right into my car. It's a good thing
we weren't moving. He was alright....but MY poor car...I know the
car got fixed......I called the police though in case he was injured
in the woods didn't want him to suffer but the police said he didn't
get hurt...found lots of hairs on the car though.
Yes, there are some people that like to hit animals....someone on
my street (when I was in high school) ran over my cat on purpose!
You never seen a fifteen year old so upset in your life....!!!!
What a terrible thing to do....can't believe it though!

394.3 | I didn't hit the cat! | TIGEMS::SCHELBERG | | Thu Nov 20 1986 12:49 | 15 |
| I can't believe that after writing in my note #2 the other day I
was on my way home from work doing 35 mph.....and all of a sudden
out of the woods a money colored cat scooted right in front of my
car......well I almost hit that cat and the only reason that I didn't
was because of my advanced driver training back in August. I took
a Stevens Advanced Driver Training course and they showed us how
to avoid things in the road no matter how quickly they happen.
Thanks to them I didn't run over anyones cat! I missed him I swear
by two inches and he almost got clipped by another oncoming car
but he made it into the woods and I went to check to make sure I
didn't hit him (I needed to be satisifed) but I heard no thump so
I was sure I didn't....I guess I amazed myself!
