376.0. "You know the feeling?" by NATASH::AIKEN (NH Agriculture - Alive & Growing) Thu Nov 06 1986 12:11
Let me tell you about Pud (rhymes with Goog):
Back around note 343, I was looking for a temporary home for my
five: Pud, Tom, Boodle, Split and Flotsam. Fortunately, I found
a vacant house one mile from where I'm staying so I can look in
on them three times a day. They are all confined to a large screened
porch at the rear of the house and are certainly more comfortable
than they would be tucked away in some kennel cage for six weeks.
Last Sunday evening, after three weeks of confinement, Pud escaped.
I know, it was my own fault for allowing the opportunity. But since
Pud normally works third shift and sleeps days, I wasn't too concerned.
By Wednesday morning, when she still had not returned ... well,
you know the feeling?
:-(
Wednesday night, still no Pud. I left the cats and drove three miles
of winding country pavement to the old house to tend the chickens
(they were left behind until I can move the coop). You guessed it!
Pud had gone Home! There's no telling how long she had been waiting
for someone familiar to her to arrive, but when I did she was ready
to affectionate. And, believe me, she affectinated all over the
place ... you know the feeling?
:-)
Now, my early acedemic and professional background was in wildlife
management and I've studing navigation in animals. But nowhere have
I ever heard of a study or report on the homing insticts or
navigational capabilities in the world's felines. Pud travelled
three miles of unfamiliar territory having arrived at her temporary
quarters in a box because she normally does not travel well by car.
I don't know HOW sho found her way, but I sure am glad she did ...
you know the feeling?
;-)
