338.8 | Looking for a Synthetic Cat | HYSTER::DZIEWISZ | | Mon Oct 13 1986 00:33 | 5 |
| Rats! I went and got the DECthroat and missed this show. When is
the next in the New England area? I'm looking for a cat to buy who
won't make me sneeze and I'm told Rex and Abyssinians are the best
bet...any ideas?
|
338.9 | Gesundheit! | USHS01::MCALLISTER | TARDIS Sales and Service Co. | Mon Oct 13 1986 10:48 | 11 |
| Quite often, Rex cats do not cause allergies in people. Abbyssinians
likewise, but to a lesser extent, (as a breeder of abbys, I'd LOVE
to tell you differently). Most cat allergies to cats are caused
by dried saliva on the cat's fur, not directly to the cat hair itself.
Therefore, if you get a young kitten, particularly from a breeder,
you might find that bathing the cat will help keep this problem
down. Most breeders start giving their cats baths (for show purposes)
so the cats are more or less resigned to it (not to say they won't
rebel).

| Hi, Thanks for the show info - I'm new to the NOTES and to showing
cats !! Daughter and I did manage to enter Timothy & Bandit in
the CFA show in Cumberland R. I. on Nov. 9th. We are curious
to see how both guys behave (hope better than they do at home !!).
I also noticed the CFF address & phone number for both CFA & CFF
in a later note - thanks. I called CFF and will register both
cats with them to be ready for the Braintree MA show on November
15 & 16 and the Dorchester MA show on December 6 & 7.
From what I gather, Cats Magazine lists all CFF shows - will be
sending for a subscription soonest! Also, really enjoyed your
"Day at a Cat Show" - sure gave me an idea of what to expect!
I plan on bringing a pad for the metal folding chair, which I
hope the show hall provides!

prominently displayed in front of my Cats Magazine, but only non-DEC
people seemed to notice (and repeatedly looked strangely at it).
I spent most of the afternoon with the Russian Blues. There was
a beauty who was almost a littermate of the kitten I recently lost
-- she was born 3 weeks earlier at the same breeder: for a moment,
til we checked dates, I thought she might have been the other female
in our litter.
Had a great time; am planning to go to Hartford next Sunday.

| RE: Marlboro Show
I really felt foolish, asking peole if they were from DEC--however...
Next time, let's try to arrange a mutual time and meeting place,
o.k.?
About the show: Did anyone else fall in love with the champage
Burmese kittend that was for sale? If she had blue eyes, my two
would have had a playmate! She was a real character. I was also
quite intrigued by the Egyptian Maus, but didn't spend a lot of
time there because there were a lot of people around them. By
the way, did you get a look at the British Blues? They reminded
me of a feline "bulldog"--sort of Winston Churchill in drag! What
solid kitties they are!
Next time, let's plan to meet, so we won't have to carry around
DEC stuff or ask, "Are you from Digital?".

| A word to the wise if you please...
If you plan to do this show, don't bring more than one cat!!!
It gets very crowded (thousands of spectators!!!) and difficult
to get to the rings with your cat! Sometimes even shouts of
"CAT COMING THROUGH!!!!!!!" don't work!
But it is alot of fun and very exciting. Alot of the exhibitors
arrive at the show in chauffer driven limosines and play it up to
the hilt! And then there is the exhibitors party afterwards.
One year they have ice sculptures of cats and champagne.

My wife is on the show committee. If UNH were flooded out, I'd hope they'd
call us (they haven't).
re: directions from California 8^)
Since it's too late to drive, go to your local airport, and get on a flight
to either Boston, MA, or Manchester, NH. Then follow the directions above.
re: How much at the gate?
Beats me. The cats appearing at the show are allowed to bring their people
for free 8^) ! Between $2 and $3 per person is usual at shows, though.
re: who's gonna go?
We'll be there, showing two kittens and one cat. We might also bring some
of our new kittens, too. If anyone reading this comes up, please stop by
and say hello!

| At a TICA show in Austin, one of our friends cats (campaigning for
top ten honors) managed to hang a claw and tear it *almost* all
the way out, while twisting it back into himself. My kitty first
aid kit, a vet/exhibitor, tranquilizers (for the owner) and some
help from others to hold the cat still managed to clip the nailbed
loose. The vet bandaged the paw up, the cat continued the show
and made every final, including three best cats.
Judges understand accidents. As long as the cat is not in a threatened
condition (i.e. no infection), the injury, being mostly unnoticable,
should not affect the cat's chances. If it is tender, and could
cause the cat to spook, you might want to mention it to the clerk,
so they could mention it to the judge.
