310.1 | Lithuanian roots for names... | DSSDEV::COLLINS | | Fri Aug 22 1986 11:07 | 27 |
|
Names for my four are:
o Minkas (aka 'Minki') Male
o Ugnis (pronounced 'Oognis', aka 'Oogy') Male
o Pukas (pronounced 'Pookas', aka 'Pooky') Male
o Achy (sort of AH chi - a cat I had years ago) Female
The first three names are Lithuanian words (a Baltic state now part of
the USSR), our vet a real trouble with the names. Minkas = Mink, Ugnis = Fire,
Pukas = "fluffy". Achy is from a grey cat I had as a child and I couldn't
pronounce "ashes". So much for nostalgia. The names also have various
modifications -
o Minki, Minker, "The Mink" -> THE INCREDIBLE SIX TOED CAT!!!
o Pooky, Pooker, "The Pook"
o Oogy, Ooger, "The Oog"
And they all get called "The idiots" on occasion.
Presently deceased cats were named:
o Pilkas (Pilky) - "Grey"
o Balta Cojas (pronounced "Coyas") - "White Feet"

Present: Dublin (male) Named both for Dublin Ireland
and for the fact that he has double paws. He's
a beautiful grey/black tigre cat with a great
disposition, he lets my two yr. old pick him
up in a headlock fashion. Nicknamed Dublinski
when he acts Polish. :^{)
Past: Furley (male) Named after Ralph Furley on
on Three's Company (I think). He was a good
kitty but turned into a "Road Pizza" because
he was playing with a dead squirrel out in
front of the house.

| One Seal Burmese, offical name Premier Jayasura Doi (Premier is
a title won through multiple successes in cat shows). His "use-name"
is Sura (an abbreviation of above). The breeder told us that Jayasura
is the name of a river in Burma. Sura was from his mother's fourth
litter, and all the seven (!) kittens were given names beginning
with D.
One Ruddy Abyssinian, offical name Premier Jestarnae Jarnta (the
breedr made up the names from the names of cats and dogs that she
had owned, and from words that just sounded nice). His "use-name"
is Kimi, named after a fire lizard in Anne McCaffrey's dragon books.
I named him this (yes, I know it was a female fire lizard, but he
doesn't seem to mind) just because it is a nice name, but when we
got Kimi home we found that he LOVES to climb onto one's shoulders
and lie draped around your neck, just like a real fire lizard, so
the name turned out to be very appropriate. He also has the typically
wild-looking Abyssinian face.

310.6 | And the reason I named mine ... | VAXWRK::SKALTSIS | Deb | Mon Aug 25 1986 20:06 | 38 |
| Current
-------
Pip - my Peripheral Interchange Pussycat; she is a 4.5 lb, very long haired
tortie on white. I got her as an adult and she came with the name. I
often call her "Pipsi", short for "Pipsidico" which is a Greek term
of endearment used for a little one (or at least that is what my
grandmother used to tell me)
Argus J. Pussycat, Esq. is my 22 lb baby. He prefers to be called
"Gus" or Mr. Pussycat. This cat can be best described as a "puppy-cat"
so as a result, I named him "Argus" after Odysseus's dog.
Eirene (pronouced "Irene") and Panther are twins. They are both
all black. Eirene got her name because she is a very tranquill,
peacefull cat. Panther got his name because he looks and acts like
the wild black panther cats.
Parent's Cat
------------
Penelope (Penny) - for some reason, an awful lot of old Greek women
seem to name their cat's this, and my mother was no exception (and
four of her Greek women friend's have cats named "Penelope"). I
think it probably has something to do with Odysseus's faithful wife.
Previous cats
-------------
Jet - R.I.P. (1956-1972) the cat I grew up with. I don't remember
if she was named Jet because of her jet black hair or because she
could run so fast. This cat was a world class hunter.
Viper - R.I.P. (1972-1982) he got this name because he liked to pretend
to sneek up on people and bite them (although he didn't really use
his teeth).

Current kitties (mine):
-----------------------
Joshua - (a.k.a. Josh, Joshy-buns, J-J-Boo, Josh-boo) Was almost
given the name Tarzan due to his infant penchant for climbing my
legs. Very macho, often prowling the house in a very businesslike
manner with head lowered. Named for the biblical figure Joshua.
Rebecca - (a.k.a Becky, Becks, B-B-Lou, Beebs) Full sister to
the above named macho man. Very shy. Named for Becky Thatcher in
Huckleberry Finn. Often creeps around corners "peeping" - looking
for someone (me) to pay attention to her.
When referring to J and B as a single unit, they're often
referred to as the Destructo Twins, DTs or Tiny Terrors (although
they're not so tiny - 2 years old, 9 and 11 pounds and growing! )
Current kitties (parents):
--------------------------
T-II (pronounced "tee too") - small tiger kitty given to parents
by sister to replace previous family cat who passed on at 19 1/2.
Was to be called Tiger due to his similarity to his predecessor, but
sister and I would not allow it. Hence T-II (as in "Tiger, too", or
"Tiger_the_second").
Current kitties (sister):
-------------------------
Rug-Rat - (a.k.a. Ruggie, Ruggers) - small black female with a
few patches of white. Had broken hind leg before coming into
sisters posession. Now can not bend said leg at hock and moves like
Peg-Leg. Doubles as a barn cat.
Charlie - Son of Rug-Rat. Very vocal. Same basic coloration as
mom, but looks like he's wearing a tux with white gloves and spats.
Also doubles as barn cat. Spends much free time climbing curtains
and playing the "gravity game" ("Oh look, see what happens when I
push this cute little glass animal off the edge of this shelf!!")
Past kitties (mine):
--------------------
Tyler - orange tabby with white "tux" and gloves. Never came
home for breakfast one morning (NEVER missed a meal in his life
before his disappearance) at age 3. Never found. Named for "Toby
Tyler", a boy in a childrens story who runs away to join the circus.
The son of a barn cat who later died of leukemia.
Past kitties (family):
----------------------
Tiger (R.I.P. 1965-1985) - Grey tiger - very gentle, very
patient, very missed. Came to live with us the day we moved into our
first house. (Mom had said we could get a kitty when we moved into
the house after 8 years of apartment living.) Lived with us longer
than we lived in the house!

310.8 | Here's mine... | NAAD::SERRA | Tom Serra DTN: 224-1558 | Wed Aug 27 1986 16:24 | 11 |
| We have two cats. The first one we got is a female long haired grey
tiger. Her name is TC. She was named for the cartoon character Top
Cat (I know he was a male, but I liked the sound of 'TC'). The other
cat was born in the wild. We found and caught him living in the
great outdoors in New Hampshire. He has short hair and is all black
- So I named him Midnight. (I named both cats since I was the one
who originally wanted cats!)

310.9 | Mom, Dad & Quartet | OGOMTS::BLANEY | | Wed Aug 27 1986 16:42 | 23 |
| We have 2 cats and 4, 3 week old kittens. Our first is a female,
also long haired, doubled pawed with calico/tiger stripes. She's
gorgeous and her name (dubbed by my 4 year old daughter) is Taffy.
Our second acquisition is a BIG black male that is a field cat that
showed up during Taffy's last heat and has "adopted" us. He is
the most likely daddy for the 4 kittens and is appropriately named
Stud.
Our 4 kittens are named Temple (for a friend of myne who was pregnant
at the same time as Taffy) is a black male with grey stripes & cream
colored markings - he's the cutest; Brittle (for her color) is a
medium brown with a cream "necklace" she has double paws; Thundercat
(because he has such a LOUD MEW) is tan with white stripes & markings
and he has double paws; and finally, there's Foam (the runt), she
is a light cream with white tiger stripes and also double paws.
She has the longest hair of the four of them and is the quietest.
I only named Stud & Temple, the rest are my daughter's and she names
them as she wants - although "Grammy" steps in when things get out
of hand! (She wanted to name one of them Lunch, in case the dogs
didn't adjust well, but I convinced her that Brittle was much nicer!)

310.10 | Copernicus = Copy {Cat} | EUCLID::PAULHUS | | Thu Aug 28 1986 11:59 | 11 |
|
I have long wanted to pay homage to my Polish ancestry, and to
recognize my scientific bent by naming something after Copernicus,
the Pole who is credited with the belief that the earth travels
around the sun, not 'tother way 'round. When I got my male Maine
Coon last year, I laid the moniker on him. When I realized that
the diminutive could be Copy and I would have a Copy Cat, 'twas
cast in concrete. - Chris

| Hamilton Bates Farnsworth (aka Honey B. Farnsworth) is my 4 year
old seal point Himalayan. Around the house, he's just called Honey.
I named him after a friend's husband (long story...). It's a strange
name for a male cat, but it's nice to come home after work and say
"Hi, Honey, I'm home!" and have someone come running!

| Current: Tazmanian Devil (Taz for short), is a black longhaired
female, with beautiful green eyes. She got her name when
we brought her home as a kitten, and all she did was run
around the house faster than you could blink an eye.
She is named after the cartoon character.
Black Sabbath (Sab for short), is a black short haired
male, 1/2 siamese with a voice you can hear next door.
My brother named him after the rock group. He's a great
companion, follows me everywhere!
Past: Black Marshmallow (Fats for short), Sabbath's brother
was long haired and double pawed (complete opposite of
Sab) and tended to be overweight. He loved to bat things
around with his big paws, including his brother.
Blackie, my first cat, named him in kindergarten - so
much for originality. I had him for 12 years and he
was a great cat, short haired and had the longest tail
I've ever seen. He put up with a lot from two little
kids.

Chayna (pronounced Shayna) -- shorthaired calico; no idea where
the name comes from as I got her, already named, from a
friend. I think it's just a made-up name.
Jasper -- Persian; variation of Casper, a Persian name. Jasper
seemed to suit him better. He was a pre-owned cat whose
former name was Sam -- singularly uninteresting (not to
cast any aspersions on other cats named Sam! Just didn't
fit Jasper somehow).
Previous names:
I went through a "Biblical" phase with Gabriel (all-white male shorthair) and
Solomon (grey and white male shorthair). Also had Candy (black & white
female shorthair) and Penuche, known as Penny (penuche fudge-colored and
white female longhair). And Mickey (black & white male longhair) was
named after my fave Monkee....

310.19 | My turn | AKOV68::BROWN | I have the 4 Musketeers | Fri Sep 05 1986 18:22 | 48 |
| I have four cats, with the following names and explanations:
1. Curious George -- I know this is the name of a monkey in
a popular children's book, and my 18-lb, pure-white-with-blue
eyes-but-not-deaf cat does not look at all like a monkey!
But when we got him he was constantly getting into mischief
as a result of exploring some new unknown corner of the house.
Even now he _cannot_ stand the sight of a closed door, the idea
that there might be something behind it is more than he can
stand.
Nicknames: Georgie Porgie (well, what would you call an 18lb'er),
G.P., usually just George.
2. Boss Tweed -- this cat was found abandoned in a South Bronx
junkyard at the tender age of approx. 2 days; fortunately the
owner's wife hand-raised him and since they were my parents'
neighbors we were selected to adopt him when they couldn't get
their cats to accept him well enough. Being hand-raised he is
super-affectionate, likely to make flying leaps into my lap
without any warning and then to settle in for a long winter's
nap (he loves to rub his face on yours and wash your chin, cat
kisses I guess). He is your basic tiger, but the tips of his
fur are coated in gold which gives him a basic "tweed" look.
And being from New York, and definitely in charge of the household,
Boss Tweed is wonderfully apt. (This is the cat that tried to
destroy our new greyhound on sight; now that his point has been
made they're best friends)
Nicknames: Tweedy
3. Pipsqueak -- she is the smallest (only about 8 lbs.) and
about the only noise she makes is a very tiny squeak when she is
demanding her dinner. She is our only female cat and is very
dainty and kittenish, even at the age of two. Acquired when I
stopped to buy cat food at the local feed store -- I'm a sucker
for friendly double-pawed cats! She instantly loves everyone and
purrs in any situation!!
Nicknames: Baby, Pipper, Squeaker, "killer-diller" (we found her
swinging from the nose of our lab-mix when she was a kitten)
4. Maxwell -- my long-desired all-black cat, part Burmese we
think. This is the name he came with, no idea why! He is now
challenging Tweed for head-of-the-household status, having reached
the same 12lb size at the age of only one year. So far things are
reasonably friendly, and the Boss is still in charge.
Nicknames: Max, Blackie, Tubbs (still growing and eats like a pig)

310.20 | Introducing.... | YOGI::HORN | | Fri Oct 10 1986 12:36 | 17 |
| Our two cats were both pre-owned and pre-named.
Spicie o Female, gorgeous tri-colored Calico (money Cat).
Perfectly named 'cause she looks like a mixture of
nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger!
Tommy o Male, grey and black tiger. He is the traditional
Tom Cat, big, burly and loving. Tommy had 2 separate
owners during his first 2 years, and now has been
with us for 3 years - and we'll never let him go!
Tom's first owner was a Minister and named him after some historic
minister - Thomas Star King. Tom's second owners were The Starrs.
As his third owners, Tom has taken my husband's last name (for
legal purposes) and is now THOMAS STAR KING STARR O"DONNELL!
For vet purposes, Tommy O'Donnell works just fine :-)

310.21 | | PUZZLE::CORDESJA | | Tue Nov 11 1986 19:52 | 58 |
| Current cats are named
Winston Churchill-blue classic tabby with white Maine Coon mix.
Usually referred to as Winners, Winneroo, Winnie
or thewinstoncat. This one is our baby.
Jesse James-shaded silver tabby Maine Coon mix with persian type
coat. My husband calls this big guy (18 lbs) "bucketbutt"
Also known as Jessers, or Jesseroo.
Pres. James Monroe-cameo mackerel tabby shorthair. So named because
he shares his birthday with President Monroe.
We call him Monroe. A friend once said of Monroe
that if he could talk, he would have a British
accent. That describes him to a tee.
Here are some of the names of previous cats that have shared our
home with us.
Cleopatra-named because of her Holy-er than thou attitude. She
was my very first cat. Her name was later changed to Chrissy because
the small son of my then live in partner could not say Cleo.
Alpha Omega- the first and last kitten of Chrissy. Only surviving
kitten in a breach litter. Jet black persian type fur. Exquisite.
Bailey_tortoiseshell. She had to be the only cat so she was only
with us for about two years. We found her a new home with some
neighbors that were moving to a new house in the country. The promised
never to upset her by adding any more cats. They often send pictures
to us. The kind of adoptive parents that cat breeders dream of.
Harrison-red classic tabby with persian type coat. Beautiful cat,
very loving. He was hit by a car and died. All my cats became
indoor cats that day.
Ralph Waldo Emerson-Snowshoe cat. Siamese type with white paws.
Died of Feline Luekemia.
Nastacia-literally pulled this little girl out of a garbage bin.
She only lived for about three weeks. Suspected culprit-feline
luekemia.
Remington-Another jet black cat, this one short hair. This cat
was a stray that was living in a field by our house. We took him
in and taught him the finer points of indoor living. This cat was
incredibly strong. We had to reduce our cat population so we found
a home for Remington with my sister's boyfriend.
I am buying a Birman kitten in two weeks which I will probably name
Sacrechats Joie de Vivre of MySinhs. As far as what she will be
called... that is anyone's guess.

| This is a P.S. to my previous reply about my new kitten's name.
I had wanted to name her Sacrechat's Joie de Vivre of MySinhs but
another breeder named her kitten that name (I want it to be unique),
so now I sent in her registration papers with the name Sacrechat's
Jouissance de MySinhs. My second choice was Jeune Fille. Jouissance
is french for enjoyment or delight, this name really fits this kitten
so I hope I get it. We will call her Jou Jou for short (french
for plaything).

310.27 | Glad There are Other "Nuts" Out There! | BUFFER::HOFFMAN | | Thu Feb 05 1987 14:29 | 21 |
| I've had lots of fun reading all the names and their variations.
Now that I know there are other "nuts" out there :^), I can state
the following about my two --
Munchkin (14-year-old, male, chocolate-point, diabetic Siamese)
- aka Munch, Mcschrunkins, Macklescrunch, Pipoofness, and Numbnuts!
(most of these are my husband's variations - of course, I won't
admit to it!)
Kali Mutu (14-year-old, female, dark seal-point Siamese - mother
was seal, father was blue-point), whose name is Tamal (Indian language)
and means Black-faced (Mutu) Goddess of Destruction (Kali - remember
"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom"?) - aka Mutu (mainly), Moo,
Mrs. Mutu, Kali M, Schmootu (again, my husband's), and Collard-schmoo
(again, my husband's).
It's lots of fun making up variations on names, and, being Siamese,
they usually respond to all of them, but with comments, of course.

| Well!
I'm glad to know that there are other "cat people" out there who
are soft as grapes over cats. I'm fascinated by what we name our
cats, and especially the nicknames we all come up with.
Henny--my previous cat; we got her when I was six, and she lived
until I was a sophomore in college. She was long-haired, gray,
with white feet, white belly and neck, and one white "garter" up
one leg. She was VERY affectionate; when held she would put her
paws around the neck of the person holding her and purr. She once
caught a WEASEL and brought it home, spitting and snarling, and
let it loose in Dad's garage. Some sense of humor..
Billie--my "now" cat, I've had for ten years. She's an all-gray
(and I mean ALL--lips, nose, and pads) stray I found outside my
old laundramat on a rainy day. She was aobut 8 months old at the
time, and so cute I couldn't resist picking her up and cuddling
her. Then OF COURSE I couldn't just put her down and leave her
there--so she adopted me. She is named after Billie Holiday, because
of her unusually melodius voice, and bird-like "chirps". She has
enormous grape-green eyes, and has long silky fur. Her many nicknames
are:
*Billie-fish
*Skoodly-doo-dah
*Boogedy-2-shoes
*Billie-4-foots
*Billie-Tuna
*POOTY-cat
*Mumma's BAYbee
Boy, I've never admitted to this in print before!!

My present cat - an 18 month old starved, abandoned throw-out from a
cat rescue centre - Teelif (from Tea-leaf, Thief) because he is !
Otherwise he has turned out to be a perfect gentleman.
He is black with white muzzle, chest, front paws and back legs.
I have only had him since the end of February and he is learning
my ways fast !!
(Past Cat) Tika - a siamese, marmalade cross. She was runover when
she was two and a half. She was a great character with a "mouldy"
coat, sort of black with underlying marmalade, very odd !
She was the worlds' most ambitious hunter, it seemed like she would
never catch anything smaller than her last victim !! She progressed
from voles to mice to rats to sparrows/blue-tits to rabbits to
moorhens to weasels to pheasants. She even tried a Boxer dog who
was being good and ignoring her !! (the owner didn't understand why
I shut her inside !)
(Family Cats - Present)
Loonatic - Black and White long hair, a cat with little brain
who will drool with pleasure (the only cat we have had who has
done this (lots of tissues needed when stroking him)).
Nicknames - Loon, Idiot, Twit.
Elodie - Common tabby, recent aquisition (sp?) in France to
replace Eley.
No Permanent name yet - smokey grey long haired female kitten.
Sometimes referred to as Moulinex, Cinder(ella)s, Ashes, Hey you
etc. As you can see, my brother hasn't made up his mind yet !!
(Family Cats - Past)
Eley - after the shotgun (twelve-bore) shell that shot him. He was
a Foreign White, pure white with blue eyes. We adopted him in a
terrible condition, the only reason why the shot hadn't killed him
was that his coat was so matted that the pellets hadn't penetrated
through to his skin ! We didn't even realise that he was white
until he had been cleaned up (shaved) by the vet (he looked like
a well trimmed poodle to start with).
Marathon - a pink (yes pink) and white faintly striped cat who
was adopted by my sister after he had lain in the road in front
of her bicycle every day for a week on the way to work.
Nickname - Tumble-bug, because he had this endearing habit of
throwing himself flat on his side against doors, legs etc.

There's three in the family.
Thomas....came with the apartment I moved into 4 years ago (since
moved). A year passed before I found out he was really the neighbors
cat (Tikki). They let me keep him. He's probably at least 6 now.
Part Siamese and Orange Tabby, he's my designer cat! All peach
except ears and tail are darker. Big blue eyes and about 15 lbs.
His favorite passtimes...drinking out of the fish bowl and never
once bothering Kublah Khan (the fish). And he used to love it when
the dog would drag him around the yard by the scruff of his neck.
I really do need to get him another dog to call his own!!!
Natashja, or Tashja....She's 2 years old and jet black. She's small
and feminine but the ruler of the neighborhood. She loves a good
fight because she always wins (I wish she'd quit that). She's fast,
I know because she brings me humming birds and snakes for presents!
And she's the softest cat I've ever known!
Katmandu, or Du....he's Natashja"s son. A black and gray Tabby.
He's a year old and very much a kitten still. Chases butterflies,
grass, the wind...anything that moves. He's a good bug catcher
and I have a feeling, will grow to be a mountain lion..a gentle
one.
Soon we will have a puppy too.
Kimberly.

310.31 | Gumby and Poky | LOOKUP::PRUETT | | Thu Jul 30 1987 16:48 | 9 |
| Our two kitten are names Poky and Gumby. Poky is part calico and
part tiger. Mostly grey with orange and white stripes. We named
her Poky because when we first got her she used to walk around real
slowly, and close to the ground. I suppose now we should call her
Speedy because she is no longer slow. Gumby is all grey with white
stomach and some white stripes. We named her Gumby because it went
with Poky. They are both sisters.

310.32 | I think I'm going to Katmandu! | CISM::NOTKIN | Do it till you're satisfied!! | Tue Apr 26 1988 10:29 | 34 |
|
Current: A small Siamese named Katmandu. I thought that she
was a 'mutt-Siamese' - kind of a mixture of points,
but someone (an owner of a cattery) told me that she
is what's known as a tortoise-shell point, which I have
never heard of before. When I got her, she was about
1 1/2 years old and her name was D'Mara. I didn't really
like it and I don't think she did either. She never
responded to it But then again, I don't think her original
owners called her much. I know that they locked her
in the basement all the time, but I think they used
to beat her, too. She was a psychological mess when
I got her, but she is an affectionate, playful,
adorable cat now!
She does respond to that name as well as her nickname,
Geet (it's a long story!).
Past: I grew up with a half-Siamese named Jum-Jum, Jumba for
short. I got her (or rather my parents brought her
home after they were at a party at her mother's owners'
house and she climbed up my father's silk tie, tearing
it up!! She was sort of like payment/reimbursement!)
when I was 4 1/2 years old and she lived to a ripe old
age of 16. She was a little on the small size, all
grey with beautiful green eyes. She was very quiet
(most unlike Katmandu!!) but purred all the time and
was VERY affectionate, even to most strangers (also
unlike Katmandu). Everyone used to comment on how
unusually beautiful she was. God, do I miss her!!!

310.33 | Need lots of names for blue-gray kittens | 58019::HTAYLOR | Cat lovers are a special breed | Tue Apr 26 1988 11:19 | 13 |
| Well, I am going to get some more kittens this Fall and I will need
some names. My neice is getting a Silver Egyptian Mau. It looks
a lot like a cheetah (sp). She has already picked out a name for
her. It is going to be CleoCATra. Cute, eh? She'll call her Cleo.
Now I have got to figure out a name for my new kitten. I am getting
another female Korat. I would like to stick to the same theme as
Sterling Silver (my other Korat) but I need some ideas. I am actually
going to need a lot of ideas because I am planning on breeding Silver
in either July or August. Can anyone help?

| Well, there's Samson - he started life as Samantha (I always wanted a
Samantha), but when he was taken in to be spayed, the vet discovered
the wrong hardware under all that black fur. She was really embarassed
not to have caught it earlier....I sexed him when he was real young
and he seemed like a girl to me...we had to change his name on the
vet records, so he bacame Samson, but I call him Sam.
Then there is Sam's brother, Sir Nicholas Long-tail, or Nickie for short.
He has a beautiful, dense, short gray coat with white boots, tummy,
and mustache. His tail is the longest I've ever seen, so his "formal"
name grew from that. He is generally a very dignified fellow except
where we are alone so everyone calls him Nicholas except me.
Ah, Hannah...well she came to me from people she didn't like who had
received her with the name of Hannah from the woman who rescued her.
She is a lynx-point American Shorthair, with cream body and orange
tabby cat points - somehow I always felt Hannah was a good name for
a red-head, so she is Hannah. She is also "TIGER" or "GOOSE" depending
on what she is doing at the time.

Jasmine: Or Jazz for short, lady like and very sweet.
Both live with my parents and are family cats really, at times mum
insists they're mine (I talked her into getting them.)
Totally black shorthaired ladies (except when they fight).
Sisters from a pet shop.
The Gang/The Troup/The Mob

Tigger: Tigery grey tom with almost flourescent green eyes.
Dribbled when happy.

Favourite pastime: Trying to get me out of bed as soon a Dad wasn't
around to tell them off.
Family cats (what original names)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Mums parents cat: Puss
Dads parents cat: Kitten
Past cats
~~~~~~~~~
Smokey: Grey ex-tom. Disagreed with a car on a main road.
Tootsie: Black neurotic kittie with white tootsies (hence the name)
and a white milk dribble - that's what it looked like -
on her chin. Disagreed with a car on a small side road.
Dinah: Tortoiseshell beautiful afectionate female kitten.
The vet who treated her said she was the best tempered
tortoiseshell he'd ever known. Kept indoors - no cars -
died of feline leukemia bladder infection water retention
kidney failure............... VERY much loved still.
Nearly gave me a breakdown - a friend was killed on his
bike in the morning, she passed on in the afternoon.
Not really my cats
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Trumpet: yes I thought it was a wierd name too. Used to visit us
from down the road when we were kids all black shorthair
missing the end of his tail.
Siskin Pipsqueak: Very young kitten tabbyish and white. Living
in the garage of a delapadated (sp?) country cottage I
nearly moved into. It had bats in the outhouses too! (The cottage
not the kitten.)
If I have another kitten if its small and noisy enough it'll probably
get called SiskinPipsqueak, I never did get to call her that to
her face..........
310.43 | I have four more cats now! | JULIET::CORDESBRO_JO | | Mon Aug 08 1988 15:31 | 30 |
| I have some new cats now, since Joui (previously refered to as Jou
Jou) we have added 3 more Birmans and one household pet, bringing
the grand total to 8 minus one for Jesse James as he has decided
to live with my mother.
Sacrechat Kyrielle of Mysinhs - sealpoint Birman female. Kyrielle
means "rigamarole" in french, this fits her sense she is always
talking nonsense. She is very vocal for a Birman.
Pleasantview's Kalliste of Mysinhs - Sealpoint Birman male. Kalliste
is our stud cat, he was named by his breeder. She found his name
in a science fiction novel so I don't know what it means. Maybe
someone out there knows?
Mysinhs Lyscentia - sealpoint female kitten out of Joui's first
litter. Her name is a variation on the word "licentious" which
means lacking legal or moral restraints; marked by disregard for
strict rules of correctness. This fits her to a tee!
Chantilly Lace - cream tabby and white longhair housecat. My husband
fell in love with her after we rescued her, and he wouldn't let
me place her in another home. She is and always will be his cat.
Neither of them would have it any other way.
That's all for now folks. I will be having another litter shortly
(in September) and am looking for good suggestions of names that
begin with the letter "L". '88 is the "L" year.
I think Kalliste is from one of the Witch World series books by
Andre Norton (pen name of Mary Alice Norton). I had the feeling that
Kyrielle's name was from there too, when I first saw it. I guess
not? I don't remember that the names had meanings. I will try
to remember to look this up when I get home.
310.47 | Lucky all the way around!! | SALEM::NOYCE | | Wed Aug 10 1988 14:58 | 29 |
| Since he appears to have been LUCKY enough to have made
it thru another scrape alive I better list him in here quick!!
Lucky is a 6 year old short haired all black cat except for 8 or
9 white hairs scattered around his chest. He was called LUCKY
becauce he was lucky we found him when we did (one more day and
he would have taken the ling sleep!), he was black and black cat
are supposed to be unlucky if the cross your path and we felt
lucky that he had crossed ours and last the name fits because he
is an outdoor cat for the most part and has had run ins with dogs
(he chases them), cats(not in my yard you don't-his atitude),
and a skunk which he chased out of the yard without getting
sprayed. He's swollowed a needle and thread and survived the
operation as well as various other things. He hates to be laughed
at and refuses to use a litter box or go to the bathroom anywhere
if he thinks someone is watching. My wife laughed at him twice
when he was sitting in the box doing his duty and since then it's
been outside even at -10 degrees!! We have a 10 year old
Keeshond called King (what a fuzz ball!!) who thinks he's Luckys
mother. Lucky will rub his face on Kings chest and that's the
signal to King that Lucky wants a wash job. What a sight watching
King lick Lucky from nose to tail.(literally!!) For Lucky it's three
minutes of a wet tongue for which he turns around when each side
is done to present all sides for a wash and no "fur" balls. I
don't know how Lucky trained King to do that but it's neat!!
Lucky does not nor have I ever heard him purr!! He also has
my wife and son believing that he belongs to each of them so
if one says no he goes to the other one to get what he wants!!
Lucky is indeed lucky!!
| Present Cats:
Oscar - named after my great grandfather who was the strongest
man I ever knew. AKA Mr. Affections, OscoBosco, Boschead,
and Mr. Cuddlemonster
Portia - named after Shakespeare (was it Merchant of Venice?
it's been a long time since high school). AKA PortyPoo,
PortyPrecious, Little Precious, PortyPreciousPoo, Momma's
Little Precious, Presh, Little TubOLard, LittleChunker,
Momma's ChunkerKitterKat, etc.
Past Kitties:
Chelsea - This was my mom's Siamese, who wore sweaters and got
migraine headaches. Mom named her.
Snowball - Very original name for a white cat. Unfortuneately,
I named her, but I was young at the time and didn't
know better.
Charlie - A pure black cat; My dad named him.
Pooh - Short for Witchypooh, which was short for Witchhazel;
He had no tail and degenerative spinal cord disease.
Dad also named him.
Cats in teh neighborhood (and what I call them):
Blue - A big Russian blue, who happens to be an incredible wimpy
cat and runs and hides whenever humans get within 500
feet of him.
Smoke - A scary looking cat whose fur is white near his body
and black on the outside.
Fuzzball - A black, longhaired cat. Also qute scary looking.
His fur is probably a good 4-5 inches long, but his
legs are real short. So, he's kind of funny looking.
Tripod - Looks alot like my Portia, except this one is missing
a leg. Still runs real fast and is still quite the
fighter. I'd probably mistake her for Portia alot
moe often is this one wasn't missing a leg.
Future Cats:
Elmo - I'm looking for an Elmo cat right now. Elmo will be
a boy, an orange and white tiger cat, FeLV+ OK since
Portia is. Will also have to be incedibly cute so when
I arrive home one night with him, my boyfriend will fall
in love with him and not yell at me for getting another.
I'm being good by not actively looking, but I keep praying
that the stork will leave an Elmo on my doorstep some
night real soon.
|
Present cats :
W.W. - (or White Waters) - a skinny all white male, though he weighs
in at 12 pounds ! He was named by his previous owner (a friend
of mine), and was given to me when she decided he was "too much
responsibility". He's really such a sweetheart, and is better known
as "Dubbers".
Punjab - (pronounced "Poon-jab") - cute little calico female who
is approximately 5 months old and who loves not only Dubbers,
but also the dog. Bugs don't have a chance around her.
We came by her name when watching the musical "Annie" on
t.v. one night - remember the magician ??
Past cats:
Space - Who was tiny enough to fix into a tissue box comfortably
when he was a kitten, and grew up to be an 18 pounder.
Earned his name as a kitten due to the fact that he seldom
paid attention to what he was doing - for example, walking
on the back of the couch & not looking, and still trying
to walk even though the couch ended.... Still miss that
sweetheart of a tuxedo cat.
310.52 | NAMES FOR TWO SISTERS | UTROP2::LOTTUM_T | | Wed May 03 1989 10:25 | 36 |
|
Well, somewhere in this conference, I announced I was going to
get two Siamese littermates, but since they are very expensive
I decided to take "normal" (haha) two kitties, born a couple of
weeks ago and belonging to a collegues' sister. It is no particular
breed, but I understand they will stay small. Sometime next week
I will see pictures of them, and the first week of June (June 6th
probably) I will go and pick them up. So, I still don't know what
they look like, the color is a kinda brown/red. I asked for two
sisters who already play alot together.
Anyway I started thinking about names, and reading this note. Here's
what I came up with so far. I combined names I read in this conference
and names I read or heard elsewhere, keeping in mind that the names
shouldn't sound very much alike but make a nice combination.
Joy & Jingles
Mikki & Maude (a film with Dudley Moore)
Spazz & Spot
Jill & Jollie
Taz & Spazz (or Jazz but sounds are simular)
Jazz & Joy
Boots and Bangles
Smudge & Sweetie
Trish & Tasha
I'll have a hard time making a choice, and the more names I read
the harder it gets. I even opened the conference BABYNAMES but no
luck there.
Suggestions are welcome!
Bye for now,
Tatjana
Magnifique, majestueux, majordome, majuscule, marechal.
Marguerite.
I can't name a cat before I know him either..
I always look at the cat, and decide what name he looks like.
I guess thats why I've had cats named: John, Jr., Tony, Steve,
Jodi, Susan, etc. oh well.. its not that strange, is it???!?!?!
| Okay, lets try this again. We lost our lat in the middle of my
reply. And that was the second time. I never learn, I should create
a file, but I like to be spontaneous ;^).
Birmans in the US have been naming their cats with letters that
correspond to the year they were born for years (since the A year
I suppose). It is fun, and sometimes useful in figuring out the
age of a given cat. It's a tradition.
The M year started on the first day of the year, and will go til
the last day of the year, then it will be the N year. Since all
the breeders are choosing names from the same letter, there can
be a lot of duplication of names. I prefer to have names that no
one else has thougth of, and that can be hard. SCBF, the Birman
Club, publishes a list of names for each year, and if I think of
a name, but it is on that list, then I know I can't use it. Gets
harder each year to come up with good names. That is one reason
why I use names from different languages.
I also have to have a name that fits the cat. Since the kittens
grow up in my house, I have a pretty good idea of whether or not
the name will fit. For example, I wanted to name Westie Mysinhs
Live Wire, but he is the most laid back kitten I have ever seen.
So instead he was named Mysinhs Livin in the Wild Wild West (hence
the nickname Westie). This name brings to my mind a cat who would
hang around in hot tubs, sipping Margueritas and entertaining women,
and that fits Westie to a tee.
Thanks for all the name suggestions, they are great. I could use
some help with the meanings and pronounciation of a few of them,
namely, Marcassin, Mauresque, Matou (is it Ma-too or Ma-to with
a long O - I think this one is great!).
Also, Shayne, are you located in New Zealand? If so, I would like
to talk with you offline about Birmans in your country.
Marcassin (pron. markassarn) - young wild boar.
Mauresque (pron. mohresk) - Moorish
Matou (pron. matoo) - tomcat
Yes, I am in New Zealand - feel free to send mail. I don't know
much about Birmans - know all about Burmese and Abyssinians, though!
| Probably no help in others search 8-)
But we have just taken on male twins, both black and white non-pedagree
kittens. They are currently 8 weeks old and have been with us a
week. My wife is a great Cliff Richard fan and decided to call them
"Cliff" and "Shad" as in Cliff Richard and he shadows !!
As an aside, they where well named, well Shad was as he seems to
let the other take the lead in most things !!
MOUSE - cause she squeeks (honest). She can't quite meow
and when she was litle I was afraid that her body
would never catch up to her big ears in size. She's
also double-pawed.
TIGGR - BIG, orange tiger cat - should be renamed Garfield.
Tiggr is my favorite character from Winnie the Pooh.
TIGGR is my favorite character from Winnie the Poo too. I love
him. I had a Orange double pawed cat before and I named him TIGGR.
We have just got our cat, and me and my wife have
think a lot of a nice & funny name. And one evening
when we look at the videomovie 'back to the future', I say
to my wife, funny name the professor have on his dog.
It was 'Einstein'. Five minutes later it pop up.
We should call our cat 'Nonstein'. (He should be castrated later)
(I don't know if this pun work in English)
| re: pun
To us native-English types, "Einstein" is the name of a famous physicist.
It takes a bit of German to translate it to "a stone". It then takes a
somewhat twisted mind to change this to "no stone(s)", and apply it to an
altered cat!
| Not to put too fine a point on it, but my (feeble) recollection of the German
indicates that kein (no, none) is better than nein (no, opposite of yes). In
any event, the catkin probably couldn't care less (about the language, much
less the females).
In one of the magazines I get (possibly CATS?) there was a cartoon that
had two cats. One of the cats said to the other, "We're getting FIXED
tomorrow? I didn't even know we were broken!"
310.87 | FROM FRISKY TO ATTU | ASABET::M_POIRIER | | Thu Aug 31 1989 05:43 | 20 |
I've had two cats in my life. The first, I got when I was 8, her given
name was Frisky... I hated it. Then, when she was a year old she had a
litter of 3 kittens and from that moment on and for the rest of her 15
years...she was called Mamma Kitty. No lie. And I thought Frisky was
stupid. The second, I got about 5mths ago... she, I have named after a
little island I read about in The Great Alone, by Janet Daily, ATTU.
In the 5 months I have had her, she has entertained me greatly, and
thought they are not really "tricks" her antics would probably best be
discribed in the "tricks" notes.
My mother has a cat that looks like the cat on the cover of Pet
Semitary... I don't think IT has an offical name... World War 3, when
it was reaking havock with my Mamma Kitty during her last days, Jubba
the Hut... it is just this large furbag that just lays there, and
responds to GET OUTTA HERE ASSHOLE! Why this cat has chose to remain,
it's not abused...really, is beyond me.
