297.0. "Where is everybody?" by STUBBI::REINKE () Wed Aug 06 1986 13:11

    What's been happening to feline lately? Is everyone on vacation
    or have you all been having the same problems I have in accessing
    this file?

        What problems have you had accessing this file? EXIT26
        itself was down a few hours this past Sunday morning, but
        has been up almost 100% of the time for many weeks before
        that.

    i've had problems a few times lately, but also, this conference
    seems to be experiencing a cat-nap!

297.4Help me track down the problemEXIT26::STRATTONJim Stratton, Notes DIG memberWed Aug 06 1986 16:1620
This is from a MAIL message I sent to Bonnie Reinke, and she suggested
I also post it here. Essentially, it's a request from me to you to
help us track down the problem accessing this conference (e.g.,
EXIT26).

When you can't open FELINE or PARENTING because of "remote node not
currently reachable", do you ever try again right after that? There
seems to be an oddity on the net that nodes appear to be unreachable
one minute but reachable the next.

EXIT26 has been up since last week (at least), except for Sunday morning
as I mentioned, and a while after lunch today when the power glitched
here in Bedford. Also, I haven't had any trouble getting to other
random nodes around the net during that time.

The next time(s) you get the "unreachable" message, wait a moment and
try it again. If you then get through (or even if you don't), I'd
appreciate it if you could make note of the date/time and let me know.
That would help us to track down this problem.

    I have had trouble also, and had tried to access several times right
    in a row............ no luck. This is the first time in days I have
    openned this on the first try.

    I just had the infamous "remote node is not currently reachable"
    message at 2:07, tried again and was successful at 2:08.

    Is your machine trying to imitate a jumping jack (up, down, up,
    down...)?
297.7Some of the problemEXIT26::STRATTONJim Stratton, Notes DIG memberFri Aug 08 1986 09:5712
        Re .6 and "jumping jack" - no, the machine itself is fine.

        According to the Network Operations people, one of the
        circuits to our facility (BUO - Bedford, MA, the training
        center) has been bouncing for several days now. This is
        probably part of the problem, but probably not all of the
        problem.

        Jes' keep trying, that's all I can suggest.

    I too was having accessing problems for at least a couple
    of weeks however this past week I have had any problem
    getting into the file on the first try.

    The message I would get is:
              Error opening "entire note spec"; as input

297.9Help is on the way?SHOGUN::HEFFELTracey HeffelfingerFri Aug 08 1986 14:456
    	We just experienced this difficulty (node unreachable while
    the node is up and network running) on one of our nodes. We seemed
    to have tracked down the problem. I'll send mail with the details.

297.10Try SHOW ERROR after an errorEXIT26::STRATTONJim Stratton, Notes DIG memberFri Aug 08 1986 14:553
        re .8 (and to others who don't know) - when you get an
        error message in VAX Notes, you should type SHOW ERROR.
        This will usually tell you more about what the error is.
297.11Conference unavailabilityEXIT26::STRATTONI brake for tailgatersTue Aug 19 1986 15:4312
This conference will be unavailable Friday, 22 August, beginning about
12:00 noon Eastern Daylight time, and probably lasting until Saturday
afternoon or evening.

We're doing a lot of construction in the computer lab, so it's likely
that the system will be down other nights and weekend days in the next
couple of weeks. I'll try to add replies to this topic as we plan
more downtime.

I apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.
