293.0. "International Cat Show" by TLE::SAVAGE (Neil, @Spit Brook) Mon Jul 28 1986 17:21
Associated Press Mon 28-JUL-1986 13:43
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Cat exercise videos. Cat jewelry. Cat furniture.
Not to mention Sir Rufus Velvetpaw and E.T. All were apparent at the
International Cat Show, where 350 felines from as far away as France
vied for titles.
The weekend event also included seminars by nutritionists and
behaviorists. Among the cats on display was Ruffy, the 1986
International Cat and Kitten of the Year, whose owner Jim Costello of
Signal Hill spent $25,000 ``campaigning,'' flying himself and the
orange-colored Persian around the country for cat competitions.
E.T. was one of the stranger entries - a rare hairless Sphynx with a
wrinkled crown and oversized pointy ears. ``He has a weird head,''
Micah O'Hair, 8, said of E.T., who somewhat resembled its sci-fi movie
namesake.
Title winners, such as the Best of the Best, came away with points
rather than scratch. The next major cat competition is the
International Cat Show at New York's Madison Square Garden in January.
