252.0. "In search of a British Blue" by CLT::COLLINS () Tue May 20 1986 13:33

    I have just acquired a type of "encyclopedia of cats", and after
    flipping through all the various descriptions and pictures, I find
    myself *very* interested in a Chartreux/British Blue. I was told
    of a breeder in Arizona named Sandra Mosley, but when I tried to
    call her I got a message saying the number was disconnected.

    Does anyone have any information on British Blues and some breeders?
    All I really know about them is that they are similar in coloring
    to the Russian Blues but are large, solid cats and considered very
    good mousers, and are quite attractive (in my opinion). This book
    had a picture of an adult and also a kitten (it was an extremely
    cute kitten!)

    I appreciate any and all information that you can supply. I currently
    have three cats and a husband who has been writing numerous notes
    on Maine Coon Cats and 1/2 bobcats.

    Thanks!!

    I own a British Blue. She is a beautiful cat, with THICK
    blue-grey fur and golden eyes, and a stocky build. Besides
    which, she's a bit fat. She is friendly, and mostly sweet-
    tempered. Her half-breed son, St. Fidgetus, is the better
    mouser; she prefers moths and other flying insects. (Hence
    her name: Grey Moth-er or Moth, for short.)

    She came from a Brish Blue cattery run by the Myjaks, in
    Rock Falls, Connecticut.

    Would you happen to know the address and phone number of the Myjaks
    so that I could get in touch with them? I think the British Blue
    is a truly beautiful cat, and I am very interested in getting one.

    Thanks again.

252.3No, but...GRDIAN::BROOMHEADAnn A. BroomheadTue May 20 1986 17:335
    Well, if I go back through my phone records for... 1981? I
    might find it. But really, there can't be that many Myjaks
    in Rock Falls, can there?

252.4There are 15 Myjaks in Rock Falls Conn.DSSDEV::COLLINSWed May 21 1986 09:356
	Well I called there are *15* in Rock Falls, only 2 in Rock Falls
proper. I guess I could just give it a shot...

252.515 Myjaks, all related...CLT::COLLINSWed May 21 1986 13:478
    I called the first Myjak in Rock Falls, Conn. Although they were
    not the ones who breed British Blues, it seems they are all related,
    and I now have the number for the Myjaks who breed British Blues.

    Thanks for the information, all! I'll put in a reply when I get
    through to the breeders - right now no one is home.

252.6Still looking for a breeder...DSSDEV::COLLINSThu May 22 1986 08:3512
	Well I called the breeder lastnight. Do to differences of opinion (she
won't sell to people who don't keep the cats indoors) I won't be getting a
kitten there. All my other cats (3) are outdoor cats - during the day, at
night they come in and stay in. Since I don't plan to treat any new cat
differently I have to find a breeder willing to let *me* raise the cat. So is
there anyone else out there with the name of some breeders?? Is there any
organization I can contact to get a list of breeders ????

252.7Let me get my sourcesRAVEN1::HEFFELFINGERTracey HeffelfingerThu May 22 1986 13:1513
        As sson as I get home, I'll pull out my sources. I have recent
    listings of breeders that advertise in the cat magazines that I
    get, I also know that I have the addresses/numbers of several(at
    least 2) kitten referral services. I'll try my damndedest to remember
    to do this tonight since we're going on a week of vacation tommorow.

        You may trouble finding a breeder who will allow you to let
    the cat out. Most of them have prety strong views on things like
    indoor vs outdoor, neutering, and declawing. But don't give up.

252.8Just a thought!NAAD::SERRATomFri May 23 1986 10:4715
    Harry,
        How about putting the number for the breeder in the notes file.
    Although it didn't work out for you, there may be someone out there
    that is willing (wants) to keep the cat indoors (personally I wouldn't
    have it any other way).

    Tracey,
        How about putting that list of breeders (or a selection of them
    if it's too long) in a separate notes file. I'm sure there are people
    out there that could benifit from it.
        I know some people would be real excited if you could give a
    number for obtaining half breeds!!

        Sorry, Harry. We're getting ready to go on vacation this evening
    and I forgot to look up and type in my info last night.

        I had already planned on entering a note with address of
    organizations of interest to cat lovers (including breeders
    organizations that can refer you to breeders in your area). (As
    a matter of fact, I've got a pile of articles waiting to be typed
    in and two article on FUS that I've typed but just need a chance
    to write an intro for before putting them in here.)

        If I don't get to it before we leave tonight, I promise they
    will be entered by the end of next weekend.

    Sorry again,

    Thanks very much for all the info. I'll let you know what happens
    in our search. My husband and I went to the Cat show in Schenectady,
    NY this past weekend, but alas there was only one British Short
    Hair entry - a pure white one (beautiful cat, though). We have the
    breeder's card at home - I don't remember if it was one of the ones
    you listed.

    Thanks very much for all the information!

252.13Cat Fanciers Data CenterVORTEX::JOVANthe Music kiss....Wed Jun 11 1986 16:1314
    I just contacted the Cat Fanciers Data Center for information about
    a Tonkinese cat I am looking for. The gentleman who answered was
    very helpful and gave me that name of a breeder in Manchester NH.

    He wanted to know how I heard about them.... well you can guess
    how I sounded explaining about NOTES... I finally got across to
    him when I mentioned electronic bullentin board....

    He was quite happy with this and wanted me to relay to everyone
    in the FELINE file that they are a national organization and would
    love to receive calls and breeder information. He loved the free
    advertising!

252.14Go for the ChartreauxKESTRL::CLOUSERAlways trying to do something annoyingTue Nov 04 1986 14:5214
Sorry for the late reply, but there hasn;t been much time for notes...

Anyway, as the owner of a pair of Chartreaux cats (no, they're *not* green), I
can give an unqualified recommendation. Marvelous pets; haven't found anything
about them we don't like. Anyway, we got them from a breeder in Fayetteville,
NY, a suburb of Syracuse. The breeder's name was Shirley Rosenberg. The breed
is still fairly rare, so breeders are stil few and far between. At the cat show
show at Copley Place in Boston last year, there was one lady there showing a
Chartreaux. She claimed to be the only breeder in New England, and boasted of a
waiting list forty cats long. Egad. The breed is well worth the wait/trouble,
in my humble opinion. (By the way, despite the fact that they're often listed
as one breed, the British Blue and Chartreaux are actually distinct.)

252.15Indoors? It's a breeders choice.PUZZLE::CORDESJAMon Nov 17 1986 18:5622

    Being a member of the breeder end of this notes file, I thought
    I should tell you that it may be very difficult to locate a breeder
    that will knowingly sell you a cat that is intended to be an outdoor
    animal. Most breeders have a sense of responsibility to the cats
    that they breed and do not wish to subject them to the hardships
    of outdoor life.

    I know many of you will be outraged by this, but since these breeders
    have brought these cats into the world, they can (and do) determine
    how they wish to have it taken care of. If a buyer is unwilling
    to agree to this, the best advice that can be given is find yourself
    a kitten or cat from the humane society.

    Recently there has been a trend in humane organizations to require
    prospective cat owners not only to have their new cats altered,
    but also to keep them indoors. The idea being that if the cats are
    altered and indoors it will be easier to control the increasing
    number of cats that are euthanized each year.
