| As a matter of fact, I have. They are similar in appearance to a Russian
Blue. The biggest physical difference is the shape of the head. The korat
has a rather "heart-shaped" head with large green eyes. (For the benefit
of anyone who has never heard of a Russian Blue, korats and RBs have a
beautiful, thick gray-blue coat with silver tips.)
They are a relatively new breed. They were recognized in the US in 1975
and later in Autralia and New Zealand and a few other places. This means
that they are still fairly rare (and thus probably quite expensive). They
are as or more rare than Egyptian Maus and the 8 week old EM kitten I saw
last Jan was going for $200. You might also have to wait a while to get
a kitten. However, it sounds like they might be worth the wait.
Here's what "Cats: Guide to International Pedigree Cats" has to say about
the Korat.
The summary says
Good Points
o Pretty
o Quiet
o Sweet and gentle
o Intelligent
o Not destructive
o Good with other animals
Take Heed
o Does not like loud or sudden noises
"The Korat has been described as having 'busy charm'. It loves to be
petted,is smart and likes energetic games. It dislikes sudden noises, however,
and so would be best suited to a quiet, well-ordered household, rather than
a mad house of boisterous children.
The korat likes quick, gentle people and gets very attached to its owner.
It will get on well with other breeds, but prefers its own breed. It will
also settle happily with a docile dog, provided it is introduced gently.
The Korat is not too talkative, except when 'calling' [in heat], and would
make an ideal pet for someone wanting a sweet, loving, quiet companion.
However, it is still a rare breed, and you may have to wait for a kitten.
At present there are more in the US than elsewhere but they are now being
bred in the United Kingdom, Canada, South AFrica, Australia, and New Zealand
and are becoming popular."
The caption on the picture says "A Korat in a playful mood. These pretty
blue cats with green eyes are gentle, quiet, sweet and companionable. A
joy to own."
In the section on origin and history...
"In the town of Korat [in Thailand], these cats are known as Si-Sawat,
which means 'good fortune'. In Thailand, it is often called ' the cloud
colored cat with eyes the colour of young rice'....They are prized in their
homeland, and a pair given to a bride means a fortunate, prosperous and happy
marriage...."
In the section on Breeding...
"When a kitten is sold, the new owner has to promise to neuter a kitten
at the age of six months, or to mate it only to another Korat. This is to
keep the breed as pure as it is, without contamination from other breeds...."
I only have the addresses of Three breeders. One in Georgia, one in
California and one in Delaware. The one in Delaware is :

202.3 | Korat Update for 1990? | GRANPA::CCOLEMAN | | Tue Jan 30 1990 13:11 | 10 |
| Since this file was written to about 4 years ago, I was wondering if
anyone knew of any breeders on the east coast? Preferably in the
Washington DC/Baltimore area? The only listing I've been able to find
is in Atlanta. I heard rumors that there was one in Delaware. My
husband FINALLY has agreed to getting another cat (making my 2 other
babies REAL excited!) and he likes Korats.
Any help is appreciated!

| I went to a cat show this weekend and there was one Korat there.
Beautiful little guy! Anyhow, the woman is not a breeder, but did have
kittens. She said she would only sell them as alters AND that she
wouldn't give them up till them were 6 or 7 months old! Is this normal?
Or is this person just doing this on her own?
Again, does anyone know of any breeders of Korats? I'm still looking...

| What I find unusual is that a person that has kittens for sale
saying that she is not a breeder. Maybe Cin or Jo will explain
why she will only sell them as alters. The reason she is waiting
for them to be 6 or 7 months old is so she can see exactly how
they are developing and be more sure of the quality. They may
be a late maturing line and need 6 or 7 months to show their
characteristics, be they show or pet. I know a breeder that will
only sell pets, whether they are pet quality or show quality. I
think her reasoning is that she doesn't want anyone outside of a
few people breeding from her line. Actually, I know a few people
that do that. Some folks want their lines out and about on pedigrees,
some don't.
Which show
As to if the person is doing her own thing?
What's the cattery name or the person's name?
Are her cats registered?
Is her cattery registered?
Is her breeding pair registered?

| Hi everyone.
First, thank you Cin for pointing me to this note. With the new job,
I've been QUITE busy.
My instincts are telling me not to deal with this Korat breeder. There
are a few things that JUST don't seem right. Do you know the cattery
name? I think the main thing that I don't like about it is that she
says that she isn't a breeder, but she has kittens? Sounds pretty
fishy to me.
I can understand her reasoning about having them spayed or neutered.
In buying a Korat, you must sign the Korat Association document. This
document says that you will not breed your cat with any other breed of
cat and represent it as a Korat, that you will NEVER have the cat
declawed, and if the cat is sold as a pet, that you will have
the cat spayed or neutered at the appropriate time, after which you
will receive the papers for the cat.
If you are interested in a Korat, let me know. I can put you in touch
with a breeder that probably has kittens now. If you'd like to wait
for one of mine, It will probably be about 7-8 months before you can
bring one home. I am in the process of TRYING to find a male where I
won't have to ship my baby across the country! It is EXTREMELY
difficult having a minority breed and not having a place to keep a male
cat. )-:

202.11 | she may just be careful | FORTSC::WILDE | Ask yourself..am I a happy cow? | Mon Feb 05 1990 16:20 | 18 |
| perhaps the woman with the kittens had an "accidental" breeding and wants
to be SURE the kittens will be pets only...hence the wait until the kittens
are old enough to be spayed or neutered before placing them in a home. It
sounds as if she is very careful to avoid undesirable breedings....I wish
more people were as conscientious, myself. She may choose to not call
herself a breeder because she does not wish to breed kittens in the
future. If her kittens are healthy, her blood lines can be traced, and
the kittens are raised "under foot" in the home and handled by the
resident humans, they should be fine as pets....and the woman has the
assurance that there will be no "mistake" breedings of the kittens.
I didn't get Hannah until she was 7 months old and she is the most
affectionate of my resident cats... I worked very hard socializing
Nicholas as a baby and then found him a home for awhile - but when
I got him back, he was feral and he has never come around....... I don't
think you have to get a kitten as a baby to have a loving pet...you
just have to get a kitten that is bright enough to learn to not fear
you.

202.12 | Thanks for the info! | GRANPA::CCOLEMAN | | Mon Feb 05 1990 17:12 | 16 |
| Thanks for all the replies! We asked the woman for her card, and she
said she didn't have one because she wasn't a breeder. She said her
cats come from a championship bloodline -- I don't remember the name of
her cat, though. (She's from Delaware). She said she doesn't let her
kittens go early because she feels they're too young at 4-5 months. Not
that I want to have a Korat to breed (we'd probably want an alter) but
we'd like to at LEAST not be told: "NO! Absolutely NOT!" (exact quote).
I think I pretty much decided that I didn't want any of her kittens,
that's why I've been trying to find someone in this notesfile to point
me in the right direction! We do want a cat to show, but we also would
LOVE to have a Korat. (I'll be contacting Holly VERY soon!)
Thanks so VERY much!

| Gee, Holly, I didn't think Korats were a minority breed. Seemed to be
so many of them (God they are beautiful and reminded me of "miniature"
mountain lions) at the Salem, NH cat show last year.
Pat, D.P., Thai (something like a "mini" mountain lion), Holly, Buffy,
Midnight (& Cookie). :-)

202.14 | | WMOIS::H_TAYLOR | Chocolate! A dieter's delight! | Tue Feb 06 1990 12:33 | 33 |
| Yes, Korats are DEFINITELY a minority breed. As of now, I am the only
breeder in New England that belongs to the Korat Cat Fanciers
Association. This is a very reputable club. As I said in a previous
note (I think), all of our cats background MUST be tracable back to
thialand. Otherwise, they are not considered a true Korat and they
cannot be shown in many associations. For example, in TICA, you can
show a cat for the first time without the papers (as long as the papers
are "pending"). That is, any breed EXCEPT for the Korat. This is not
TICA's doing, it's the Korat Cat Fanciers.
This is why I don't understand about this woman. It could be possible
that these are not pure Korats (one could be cross bred with a russian
or a blue oriental).
I would LOVE to have seen the Salem NH show last year. What
association was it??? Are they going to have it again this year??
RE: a few back. Getting a kitten at 8 months old.
8 months is QUITE late to get a Korat. Korats have different
personalities compared to other cats. Basic rule that Korat breeders
tell people when they buy kittens is, "Secure everything! Even if you
don't think that they can get into it, believe me they can! AND, if
there's something you don't want them to do, teach them when they're
young! Otherwise, you'll never break them of it!"
Korats are definitely a beautiful cat. Their elegance and grace is
absolutely spectacular. But the thing that I like most about them is
the way that they attach themselves to one person. It's truely special
to be "owned" by a Korat. (-:
