193.0. "This notefile to be converted" by EXIT26::STRATTON () Sat Jan 04 1986 11:58

This notefile will be converted to the new VAX Notes format on Saturday,
25 January. This means that VNotes and Notes-11 users will be unable to
access the file after that date. There is an effort underway to upgrade
Notes-11 so that it can access new-format files. However, it is currently
unknown when this new Notes-11 will be available.

Also, VAX Notes requires VMS V4.2 (at least) to be installed on a system.
See the notefile CLT""::SYS$NOTES:NOTESUTIL.NOT for more information on
VAX Notes. In particular, note 530 explains how to install it, and gives
the location of documentation.

VAX Notes is currently scheduled for external field text on 17 January.
At that point, the newest field-test version of VAX Notes will be made
available internally. If the external field test is delayed, the
conversion of this file will be delayed also.

After the conversion, the old file will be write-locked. The last note in
the old file will contain information on the converted file.

Once a week, all notes written to the new file in the past week will be
extracted, and written to the file EXIT26""::SYS$NOTES:FELINE_mmdd.TXT,
(where "mm" represents the month - 01, 02, etc., and "dd" represents the
date that this text file was created).

These text files will be generated until two weeks after the new Notes-11
becomes available, at which point they will be deleted.

It seems that one week, from "internally available" to must have for use
of this file is a bit of a short fuse! Will VAX notes be mounted on most
systems in this interval? I can forsee a bunch of cat fanciers out in the
cold come Jan. 27. Could you delay the conversion a bit more? Chris

Actually, an internal version of VAX Notes has been available for several
weeks now, and is installed on nodes around the ENet, so you could ask your
system management people to install it today. (See .0 for details.)

My hope is that by converting this (and other) files sooner rather than later,
more users will ask their system management people to install VAX Notes,
to the (eventual) benefit to Noters, the ENet, and notefile "homes" everywhere.

     Yes indeed. We've had Vaxnotes since 2 or 3 weeks before Christmas.
I like it well enough and am frustrated enough with having to use two different
systems to get my noting done, that I would like to see all files get converted
soon so we can get on with it...

     Talk to your system manager. The installation was painless. Didn't
have to take the machine down. (That's a telling point with us system manglers.
often installations (at least here) have to take place over a weekend or
lunch.)

This notefile will be converted on Sunday, 9 February, rather than 25
January, as originally planned. The reason for this delay is that the
external field test version of VAX Notes won't be available until the
end of January (probably the 31st).

Since I'm not sure exactly how long it will take to convert all the
EXIT26 notefiles, or exactly when I'm going to get to do it, you should
plan on this file being unavailable for the entire day.

For those of you who would like more details on using VAX Notes, and
differences with Notes-11 and VNotes, see either the document
HUMAN""::NOTES$LIBRARY:VAXNOTES.MEM, or the old-format notefile
HUMAN""::SYS$NOTES:VAXNOTES or the new-format conference

        This file was converted to a VAX Notes conference on
        9-February-1986. Also, this topic has been write-locked.
