Our kitten Isembard is very curious. Open any door and he jumps right in. He does this so fast that sometimes we don't know he has gotten in there. Usually we know, and just leave the cupboard open until he comes out. But twice we didn't know. 1. He was inside a closet, which we pushed shut and then left the house for 24 hours. Took us a while to trace the meows when we got home. He was very hungry, and had peed on the floor, but doesn't seem any worse for it. Now we always make sure we can see both cats before we leave the house. 2. I opened the freezer on our side-by-side refrigerator and Izzy jumped OUT. How long had he been in there? We don't know; it couldn't have been more than a few minutes. This kind of thing gives you nightmares. I installed a piece of cardboard to block off the lower two (unused) shelves so he couldn't jump in. (The lowest shelf is a dark brown bin-like thing, and it is hard to see when he is sitting in it unless you remember to look down.) To prevent this kind of thing happening again, we thought of putting a little bell on him. He wears a flea collar and seems to have got used to it, although he sometimes gets a front leg though it, al the way up to his shoulder. Will the noise of the bell drive him bonkers? Will it drive US bonkers? I was thinking of a small metal bell. Might he pull it off and swallow it?

We used to have bell-collars on our cats when I was little. As I remember, the bell drove us nuts only for a few days. After that it was COMPLETELY SILENT because the cat had learned to walk so that the bell never rang. Keep checking the cabinets. The way we usually know that Chorniy has again gotten himself stuck in a closet is that Koshka is sitting outside of it, arms folded in front, smiling smuggly and saying not a word! --Louise | |||||

Re .1: Yes, cats quickly learn how to walk and stalk silently with bells on, so you probably shouldn't bother with 'em. If you're going to go out, you might open some food; if your cats are like mine, they'll all come to check out the new food. That's both an easy way to check the census and to make certain you know what they're up to when you leave. Steve Kallis, Jr. |
