I read an article in our (Derry, NH) local paper last week that really opened
my eyes.
It seems that the local animal shelter is for dogs only! Some people had
dropped off a litter of kittens at the shelter's door but the people running
the place were forced to keep the little darlings outside in the cold. At least
they fed them and were attempting to find homes for them. But they made the
point that, in the future, they could not be held responsible for cats left
in their care.
I guess the point is, don't assume that a local animal shelter will accept your
"orphans".
