44.0. "FELINE ASTHMA" by PRORAT::PICCICUTO () Tue Nov 06 1984 13:08

My cat Smokey, a 3 1/2 year old- neutered male, has been diagnosed
as having asthma.

He currently is getting an injection of some sort once a month,
(a type of steroid injection). The vets have now decided to lecture
me on the evils of doing this. What am I supposed to do?????
I've been told that after getting these injections for an extended
period of time, his kidneys could weaken. He has been getting these
injections for 2 years now.

Does anyone else have this problem with their pet? I love this kitty
dearly, and I don't want anything to happen to him. Does anyone
know of a different course of action for this problem?

To update my note of almost 4 years ago, I have just lost my best
friend Smokey. The steroids destroyed his liver and kidneys.

The loss is just so hard to bear...

I'm so sorry about Smokey. I'm sure you did the right thing for
him though, in using the medication that made him comfortable.
    Our thoughts are with you.

I am so sorry for your loss of your best friend. You made Smokey's
life as comfortable as possible. I'm sure he enjoyed the best quality
of life with you. You will find strength in the loving memories of the
    years you two shared.

When the time is right, I hope you will open your heart to another
best friend and be adopted by another kitty. To save another life
can help ease the pain of losing one so dear to you.

    Take care.

Thank you for your caring notes. I miss Smokey and it's going to
take me quite a while to remember that he is no longer with me.

I get extremely aggitated when careless others make comments like,
it's just a cat - animals do not have the same feelings at humans,
How can anyone be so rude as to even suggest that? I guess they
have never known the love and friendship a kitty can give one.

Having lost my best little Siamese friend last summer after
19.5 years, I can sympathize. It takes a long time to forget
(and I still call for her sometimes). However, my new little
Siamese friend Niniane is a joy, and I'm sure Lucky would have
wanted me to continue to love and care for her fellow creatures.
When the time is right, I highly recommend a kitty or two. They
don't replace the friend you lost, but they do fill up that empty
space in your heart and your life.

    Take care,
