Are you worried about going away for a while and leaving your kitties with someone whom you don't trust entirely, or perhaps they're going to be left alone? Well, if you're in the northeastern Mass/Southern NH area, you have an alternative. The "Meow Motel" in Amesbury, MA, is, as the name suggests, a motel for cats. And only cats. (Some dog kennels run cat boarding as a sideline.) The Meow is run by two delightful older people: Roy and Carol Cobb. They both love cats and take excellent care of their charges. The Meow Motel has large, individual "rooms" for the cats, each with a soft bed and a litter box. Cats are typically fed 9-Lives type cat food, but you are free to supply your own or to make requests. (Carol Cobb tells of how one customer brought fresh salmon to be cut with silver scissors for her kitty!) The cats are let out to play (inside) each day. The last I was there, the rate was $2.50/day. My cats have stayed at the Meow for 6 years now, and seem to like it. (However, they hate the car ride to get there...) The motel was even featured on a segment of Evening Magazine on Boston's Channel 4 last August, said segment including about 10 seconds of Helen and I holding our cats and me telling how I know they'll get the love and affection they get at home. The Meow has customers from all over New England, many of whom have been bringing their kitties in for over 10 years. Sometimes, much to Mr. Cobb's disgust, the owners never return for their cats, so he sometimes has adorable kitties looking for a home. (I can't understand such behavior.) You can call the Meow Motel at 617-388-1722 for reservations. Tell them that Wellington and Tabitha sent you. Steve

Wow, I wish I had known about this place last summer. I went on vacation and didn't want to board Pourushahspa Aerofat (Shah for short), my Persian, at a kennel, so I left her at my friend's house . When I came back from vacation, the cat had gotten out and run away. I put ads in the paper for months. No response. Then about 6 months later I saw her in the rain at a rotary. I stopped the car, ran after my poor ragged, skinny, wet pal, but she took off. After more ads, I got some calls and went looking for her but never found her. So, now I know where I can take my cat to be boarded. Thanks. Nichole

Update on the rate. I was remembering a bit further into the past than I thought. The rate last August was $4/day. Still a bargain. Steve

Does the Meow Hotel also screen their customers to be sure their cats are up to date on their shots and also for Leuko preventative shots? I'd hate to leave mine someplace that wasn't that careful after paying so much out in boosters myself (because I care enough). If they do this screening, sounds like the purrfect place to bring them when going away on vacation, etc. Thanks Pat

In a conference as large as this, it's odd to hear Amesbury, my tiny little town mentioned. What a coincedence! The Meow Motel is less than 1/2 mile from my home! Stacie

Back in the file after some four years! The Meow Motel requires you show proof of pneumonitis shots, though they don't ask (last I heard, but that was also a couple of years ago) for proof of leuko or rabies shots. Can't hurt to call and ask. Steve |
