3735.0. "Recent PSIFIX043? (deaccess problem)" by VFOVAX::STRONG (Bill Strong, Digital SI) Fri Feb 07 1997 23:29

Is there a PSIFIX043 available that's more recent than the version from
    in MARVIN""::CBN$FIX_KITS:PSIFIX043.A (31 July 1992)?

In particular, I'm looking for a version which fixes the bug talked
about in Note 3063.4: io$_deaccess QIO hangs in odd situations (like if
VC has already been cleared from the other end).

Any pointers would be appreciated. I have a customer in trouble.

Nope.

I don't recall any fix like that being made to PSI V4.3. There was an NVDRIVER
fix in late 1993, but I cannot find that right now. It's not likely to be of any
help to your customer anyway (but it should be in the latest patch kit available
through TIMA if you want to try it).

PSI V4.3 is no longer supported and the sources are due to be archived real soon
now.

I've been asking through various channels whether we can offer Prior
Version Support for PSI V4.3, as we've started doing for other products
    of that era (VAX/VMS V5.5-2, DECnet-VAX, etc.).

Has anyone else tried to do this?
Does anyone else know of customers who might be interested in purchasing
Prior Version Support for PSI 4.3?

And wasn't PSI one of the products whose maintenance we recently sold
    to EDS?

Well the sources have already been archived (it happened last week). So
Prior Version Support in the case of PSI (and WANDD) means "Here is the
latest fix kit we have and the best of luck to you".

    > Has anyone else tried to do this?

Not that I know of. I presume that I would have been told, as I was the
    last active PSI V4.3 resource.

In this case I don't see much difference between PVS and the standard
unsupported product support from the CSC. My understanding is that (in
the UK at least) if you ring up with a problem that is known and a fix
is available, you'll get given it (i.e. a fix kit or a workaround)
along with a warning that unless you are willing to supply a purchase
order for someone to look at it more deeply, that's all you get. You
won't get anything more by buying PVS for PSI or WANDD (unless you can
persuade someone to actually learn the code and provide fixes!) so why
    bother?

    > And wasn't PSI one of the products whose maintenance we recently sold

I don't know if EDS and Digital have finished sorting out what exactly
is and is not EDS' responsibility, but my understanding is that PSI
V4.3 was not on the list.

Your customer's best hope is to upgrade to a supported version (Open
VMS V7.1 with DECnet-Plus V7.1). It so happens that there is a
potetially similar problem outstanding against that version, but at
least it is being worked and will be fixed.
