5567.0. "Jetdirect (hp) vs NETJET (emulex)" by UTRTSC::KNOPPERS (Oswald Knoppers) Fri Jun 06 1997 05:23

Note about HP laserjet printers and LPD.

Most of these printers contain a Jetdirect card (made by HP) but some of
them have an Emulex NETJET card. These cards also implement LPD. One of the
differences is the queue names. Jetdirect cards have TEXT and RAW, the
NETJET has TEXT and PASSTHRU. Below is an article from Emulex on how to
configure UCX LPD for NETJET.

Oswald

Server Model: Printer and Comm Servers
Software Version: 2.1 or higher for communications servers
3.0 or higher for printer servers
Subject: Application Note -- Digital UCX LPD printing
				from VMS

Solution/Procedure:

Software: This note covers general settings for Digital's UCX product under
VMS using LPD to print. This document assumes that the UCX$CONFIG.COM
procedure has been run to properly configure LPD on the VMS system. It also
assumes the Emulex server has been configured appropriatly for LPD.

UCX configures printers via a utility called UCX$LPRSETUP. You execute this
utility with this command:

$run sys$system:ucx$lprsetup.exe

It will prompt the user for many pieces of information that should be obvious
for the SYSTEM ADMIN person. The pieces of information needed that are
directly related to Emulex servers are the node name of the server from the
UCX setup and a remote printer name. The other items in the utility are
specific to the VMS queue setup. See the UCX and VMS documentation for
correctly configuring these parameters.

When you first run this utility, it will ask you the type of queue. Answer
remote to this question.

When prompted for the remote machine name, give the name of the Emulex server
registered with UCX in its hosts table. See the UCX documentation on how to
define a host.

When prompted for the remote printer name, give it TEXT for normal text files
and PASSTHRU for postscript or graphics printing. If you need to print both
types of data to the same printer, two separate queues will need to be built
using the appropriate name of TEXT or PASSTHRU.

Once UCX$LPRSETUP.EXE is finished, it will ask if you wish to start the queue.
Answer yes.

Now, using the normal VMS PRINT command, you can send jobs through the queue.
