| 5554.1 | Needs MX records in Corporate DNS | CGOOA::OWONG | SKIWI in Canada (VAO) | Sat May 31 1997 01:42 | 44 |
According to my invocation of nslookup taov01 and taov06 do not have MX
records in the Digital corporate DNS, hence you can't get mail from the
Internet.
My entry for vaou09.vao.dec.com follows. I get messages from the Internet
fine.
Owen.

| 5554.3 | MUST be registered in Corporate MX environment... | CGOOA::OWONG | SKIWI in Canada (VAO) | Mon Jun 02 1997 16:33 | 12 |
The entries need to be added so that they show up at the DNS used by
our external mail gateways mail11.digital.com etc.
When mail is received from the Internet, the external mail gateway
checks the recipient address and needs to know how to redirect the
message inside of Digital.
Since your nodes are not registered in the corporate DNS, the lookup
fails and the external mail sender will probably get a host unknown
error message.

| 5554.4 | how to setup MX, then update serial | PARZVL::ogodhcp-124-40-168.ogo.dec.com::kennedy | nuncam non paratus | Tue Jun 03 1997 11:44 | 27 |
First, you don't want just the one MX record, you want to
have the lowest preference (highest priority) MX record
be for the machine itself, then higher preference for
the mail relay machines which can receive mail from the
Internet. I'd recommend you use:
taov01.tao.dec.com. IN MX 10 taov01.tao.dec.com.
taov01.tao.dec.com. IN MX 100 mail31.digital.com.
taov01.tao.dec.com. IN MX 200 mail11.digital.com.
mail31.digital.com is the relay in Singapore, which is probably a
better choice for you than mail11, which is in the US.
Second, once you've updated the information in your primary nameserver,
then you need to change (usually add 1 to) the Serial entry in your
SOA record:
@ IN SOA taxp03.tao.dec.com.
postmaster.taxp03.tao.dec.com. (
109 ; Serial
7200 ; Refresh - 20 minutes
600 ; Retry - 10 minute
1209600 ; Expire - 2 weeks
43200 ) ; Minimum - 12 hours
(e.g, change it to 110). Then your secondary nameservers will see that
they need to copy new information from the primary and the MX records will
soon be seen everywhere.
